Moving to Punt Road would probably not be a great idea as it represents the past albeit a slight upgrade on the present. I will wager you that the grandstand is heritage listed... would you like your club to train in yellow and black surrounds with the possibility of a giant tiger face on the roof.

Didn't know about the heritage listed grandstand.

I don't think we will ever be able to have our own place, sad to think about we came from the MCG and as the years ticked by the club didn't try and build a home base.

I wasn't suggesting the oval isn't the appropriate size SK.  My tongue in cheek 'termination' comment was in reaction to OD's post stating that the MFC, under PJ's reign, investigated the option of Elsternwick Park and found it to be a non-viable option for whatever reasons.

IF that information is correct (outside of the size info) then i would be trusting that it has been looked at and we need to strike it out as an option.

if you jump on google maps and take a look at the place you will see the space available their is absolutely massive and it included a 9 hole golf course (now shut down) 2 footy ovals, tennis club, and a very large square of open fields.

If the will was there, one would assume you work out a deal with Elsternwick footy club to upgrade the existing main oval to be MCG size and utilize a parcel of land that is currently the defunct gold course for the admin buildings and upgrade the whole parkland area for local use.

Maybe too late however as council have plans I believe to do not a great deal with where the golf course was and then to tell the community how wonderful they are for doing it.

Golf course is to be passive land use with natural vegetation. Likely too late to include that in a proposal.

Fair enough,  no probs, it is likely too late. I guess what bothers me is not hearing details of why things are ruled out and not knowing whether that is from poor communication by the Club or me not being in the know enough.

WOMEN’S footy and other Bayside community sports will get a supercharged boost when work on a multimillion-dollar upgrade of Elsternwick Park Oval 2 is completed at the end of next year.

I can't see the rest of this article as it's under the HUN subscription.  Someone else might be able to.  The No.2 oval isn't the one we are discussing (obviously the No.1) but upgrades and a possible  inclusion of our HQ could have been considered surely?  I'm assuming this was covered in the MFC's investigative search that OD is referring to last year under PJ...

Agreed.  It would help if we received some sort of communication/updates from the club once in a while with some stated intentions/progress.  Maybe they have and I've just ignorantly missed it along the way.

Now there is talk that Sandown race course will be closed down and made into a "super suburb".

That's a hell of a lot of land. Surely there's room there for a big park for the new homeowners ... with an MCG-sized oval, first class training facilities (for local clubs), swimming pool, gym (for the locals who aren't into outdoor sport), offices (saves on commuting), convention space, and (hopefully) enough room left over for a trophy cabinet. And I bet indigenous and disabled facilities are currently under-represented in the surrounding suburbs area ...

They have. They've been communicating it out on the field in sign language. Dropped marks, kicks to the oppo, kicks on goal that fall short, etc.

We may not like it but is it time to consider a mega shared facility.

The reality is that there will not be 10 Essendon style complexes built in Melbourne.

If we continue as a bit player we will lose out unfortunately. It's the reality.

If you want to see what a 50 year plan for facilities looks like, then have a look at Essendons at Tullamarine.  2 ovals one the size of the MCG, the other the size of Docklands.  An indoor facility the size of 4 basketball courts and an administration headquarters. 

This is the future of what is needed, and it is why Hawthorn is moving.  Waverly is not big enough for the future. 

SO to be serious about the future, a facility needs 10 + acres of space....as has been pointed out by others, that is not available within 10km of the city.

I hope that we can secure some sort of government assistance, but a serious amount as well.  To get to AAMI, I think we got $2M while RIchmond got $12M, the Dogs gifted land and facilities of $16M.  Now Carlton, Richmond, Geelong, St.Kilda are all getting huge handouts.  Why not us?

Is it really necessary to have two ovals, one the size of the MCG and the other the size of Marvel? Couldn't one large oval suffice with line markings drawn to represent the MCG and Marvel playing areas?

Also, I know a number of posters, DV8 in particular, are keen for a social club to be included in the facility. I don't see this as a priority and wouldn't like it to be the only reason why a suitable location can't be found.

As to being granted money from the Federal or State Government, I see that as a given. As soon as we have the right proposal, the Government(s) will cough up. Governments are not selective based on the name of the team. It's just about the logic of the proposal. (And it won't matter who is in power.)

Not sure I go along with this. John Brumby helped kick Athletics Victoria out of Olympic Park so Collingwood could have the track for an oval. (John Brumby is a Collingwood supporter.) Dan Andrews replaced the board of Workcover when it looked like they might investigate Essendon over the drug scandal. (Dan Andrews is an Essendon supporter.)

Then add in federal pols who usually have only a vague notion of any sporting code, except for a belief that sporting fans may potentially vote. And adjust their policies in accordance.

The "logic of the proposal" is often about as logical as bids to host the Olympic games. A lot of fluff and not much guarantee of the long term benefits spruiked.

Our people should know this and play the game that way.

I agree, with you 100%, maybe the club might want something closer to the CBD? 

Why can't we try and see if the tennis courts can move to a nice new place near the Docklands?
