Macca I usually like your comments but disagree with some of this. I have been saying for some time that we need to call the umpires in and ask them what is wrong with our techniques. We do not receive what appear to be obvious free kicks and give away what are doubtful.

Even commentators recognise the many discrepancies.

We need to improve  our positioning or techniques to improve the ratio and particularly the momentum turning aspects of our free kick record.

I note that the booing by Essendon fans resulted in AFL luminaries to call on a review of umpires so a reasonable approach can be worthwhile.

They wont come in unless we pay them....

The better side lost on Friday due to a diabolical  decision on  Smith  by Margetts(proven to be incorrect by the MRP).

Yes , if we'd kicked a third of the gimmes we missed, we'd have won, but that's not the point!

It is not your point but it is my point.

I factor in home town decisions but I don't factor in poor kicking for goal.  Unless that happens constantly.

Kick straight and we win.  And that is something that we control.  We blew a golden opportunity to win in the West.  By contrast,  we didn't blow that opportunity to win over there in round 22 last year.

either atrocious goal kicking or poor umpiring accounted for at least 3 goals

so you can legitimately blame either or both for the loss

local umpires in perth games is just wrong and easily fixed by the afl

standard of umpiring is a real issue for the afl and there are a number of really easy changes the afl could make if they had any leadership

make all the apologies you like, macca, but it is simply not good enough to tell people to just move on

The fact that you concede that home town decisions exist ,justifies the opinion of the posters disagreeing with you!

As I’ve pointed out in a previous post, Melbourne  get far less “home town decisions.”  Our supporters are usually outnumbered by opposition fans at  our home games at the MCG, except with interstate visiting teams. In those games the attendance is so low in the huge MCG that there’s no atmosphere, and less likelihood of home town decisions.

It’s a disgrace that the umpires allow themselves to be affected by the crowd. While they’re not professionals, they are very well paid, and should not be considered above reproach.

Agree. Tough game to officiate but there were several absolute howlers.  Dont believe it is sinister.

I reckon we got the best of the umpiring in the first half and into the 3rd quarter.  And we often get the rub of the green in many other games.  So it all evens itself out ... in my opinion.  Do you remember the last 5 minutes of the QB clash in 2017?

And equally,  numerous people here are suggesting that I should jump up and down and complain bitterly.  Not just on this thread either ... on numerous threads on a constant basis.  it's never ending.

I've never done it and I'm never going to do it (complain bitterly)  As previously stated,  I view the sport differently.  Others think like me it's just that they don't want to get involved.  It's a minority view obviously but so be it.

As much as umpiring is frustrating good team overcome it. The fact are this is just another wasted season by a mediocre team. Last year was an outlier but umpires are not responsible for the pain this club inflict upon it supporters! Just different season same old crap.

I have also pointed out that certain teams in any sport will get more home town decisions than other teams

In professional sports with full time professional referees.  And that has been happening for decades.

It is just a quirk of pro sports and it falls into the 'does happen' category.  Good luck trying to fix it.   I'd rather get on with it rather than get bogged down with injustice issues.

And it's true,  we generally don't have a home field advantage with regards to the umpires.  Although,  against a number of interstate visitors we've had a good run on many occasions.  We're not always on the receiving end of poor decisions.  We're often the beneficiaries.

In a way,  it all evens itself out although I do concede that the Eagles get a better run than other teams.  But the fortress-like atmosphere that their fans create is the factor that contributes to that advantage.   Some would say good on 'em for doing so.

It's a lot like the various soccer nations having to play at Montevideo (Uruguay)  I could give you a stack of other examples.

Any number of EPL teams get a better run at home from the refs as opposed to away from home.  Same deal for the NFL,  NBA and the MLB.  All with full time professional referees.

Yep ... that is the real issue.

If we were switched on from round 1 we'd be sitting on 5 or 6 wins.  The fact that we are 3 & 6 is an indictment on the FD and the list.

We wait around til round 9 before playing our best.  Bit late.

I have relatives and older friends who swear that the umpires hate Melbourne in the 50s and 60s.

And just for the record. When Melbourne beat Essendon in the 1941 grand final, Essendon won the free kick count around 40-10.

I came to terms with it all decades ago ... so I'm not like you.  Why is that a problem?

Are you trying to shut the supporters up... from complaining about the umpires decisions ???

On one hand, it seems your trying top shut us up...  then on another hand, you mention the Eagles stadium as Fortress like,  with seeming admiration.

The point I'm making is that umpiring errors happen (I see what everyone else sees) and that those errors happen for all teams - even the Eagles (more so away from home)

So,  it's not just us.  But by reading this site,  you'd think it was just us being on the receiving end of dodgy decisions.  What do reckon opposition supporters would think of this thread for instance?  "Umpires hate Melbourne" ... they'd probably get a good laugh out of it.

And there's no admiration for the Eagles Fortress-like home ground advantage ... more so an acknowledgement that these things just happen.  And the same things happen in a lot of sports.

I have just never been one to blame umpires ... not as a player nor as a spectator.  And there's others like me too ... they are just not very loud about their thoughts.  For good reason too - who needs the angst?  I do this every year for a couple of days and then I shut up.  I like to send a message,  that's all.

Besides which,  your side of the argument is repeated by hundreds of posters on a constant basis on numerous threads.  My view is not even close to squaring the ledger

And I believe that I'm right in what I'm saying ... for many here,  they've never witnessed or even acknowledged the other side of the argument.  As I said previously,  it's drummed into us from a young age that the umpires need to be treated like the enemy.

I don't agree with that assertion so there you have it.

Pretty sure every supporter from every club has started a thread like this.

Umpires go at 85% accuracy and we copped a couple of unlucky ones in the last. They’re not robots, they’re humans who make mistakes, just like players.

Get over it.

In the end,  the best teams win a large percentage of their games because they are the best teams.  We need to become one of those best teams and then the umpiring won't matter to those that it matters to now (in a general sense)

Have you not noticed that the moaning about the umpires goes hand in hand with the losing? ... usually the close losses.

Win games (or get smashed) and there is barely a murmur.

You and I see the sport differently.

The brown paper bag syndrome in the umpires' rooms after the game may arise - or has it - for WC?

well of course umpires won't always be 100% correct.....that's not the issue

problem is despite 3 field umpires and 4 boundary umpires they are making more mistakes, changing rule interpretations and being incosistent within and between games than before, whilst every other aspect of the game is improving (well, mostly) and the afl does nothing but fiddle at the fringes and make it worse

but.......if you are happy with afl umpiring.....i guess we will all have to get over it..... thanks for your advice, i had obviously been imagining my concerns and had problems with my eyesight and understanding of the rules....

While I have no sources to speak of either inside or outside the club, I have it on good authority that as we speak Perty, Mahn's and Toddy are planning to visit a number of AFL and senior umpiring figures to let them know that t here is a new dog in town "Perty" and that they had best learn their place or else sleep with the fishies.

On a side note, a couple of minutes before the players run up the race to go through the banner we should do he warriors chant - "Warriors, warriors, come out to pla-ay". The club could play it over the speakers, it would be awesome.
