The Collingwood-Geelong game and the Adelaide-Hawthorn game give the same questions.

Is Hawthorn better than people expected?

Is Adelaide worse than people expected?

Again, I suspect the latter.

I'm not particularly surprised at seeing three of the five most hyped sides going into this year (Adelaide, Collingwood and us, with the other two being Essendon and Brisbane) dropping games almost everyone thought they'd win.

Regardless, I get nothing but disgust at seeing Geelong and Hawthorn win unexpectedly.

    Wow the dogs have started so well. Maybe there jumper has given them superpowers. To keep sydney goalless in that term was good. Should be interesting to see what plan Longmire has to get them back in it.

    WCE has the shortest pre-season out of anyone and yet still pantsing Brisbane at the Gabba who pantsed us in the JLT. Not sure how long this short pre-season excuse is going to work for us.

    They were excellent against us at Casey.

    WCE V LIONS is a carbon copy of our match.  Eagles start match as you’d expect, running all over Brisbane, then like flicking a switch, the eagles look tired and slow.  Very underdone.

    Well, well, well. So far just about every underdog has won. Richmond was the exception, and they were challenged after the first quarter. I can see this season being a very interesting time for the so-called top sides.

    Yep -  all top four teams have looked very ordinary. 

    It'll be a matter of how quickly we can catch up with the pack and what damage is done before then.

    I reckon we should all take a sample size of more than one match before we draw conclusions on certain clubs, us included.

    If you'd done that after Round 1 last year you might have argued that Carlton were in for a good year (they'd won both JLT games and pushed Richmond, scoring 95 points against the reigning premier who scarcely conceded 100), or that Collingwood was in for another wasted season (after their terrible showing against Hawthorn), or that West Coast was what everyone thought they'd be, just a middle of the road side (after losing their first game to Sydney).

    What a great win by brisbane. It is interesting to see the teams apart from Richmond that started pre season later have so far lost. Actually I correct myself because hawthorn won to. 

    Anyway lets hope our weekend can get a little better by the giants beating essenscum today.

    In previous years underdone teams at the start of the could start with extra players in defence to control the game and stop quick scoring.  This is no longer the case.  But as the fitness builds i see the clubs with more talent moving to the top of the league. (Assuming individual players they perform as expected)  This used to happen in the 80s due to the limited preseasons compared to modern football.  They played into fitness. 

    As for Brisbane you could see the signs lats year that they were improving, natural progression and whether they can sustain it.

    Brisbane were clearly improving last year and will be the team to watch rising through the ranks this year. They were impressive last night in every way. Hard tackling pressure, great skills, aggressive play, fast and hard running. They worked hard.

    Yep, agreed. the new rules are quite different to the look of the game and hinders our closing down of space, which we had only just learnt to do...  so the AFL continue shuffling the deck.

     

    The comp is getting more even as the other also-rans start to mature...  so this will be a very even season,  as there is no standout power teams.

    But pacy sides will be able to open up games by the look of things atmo.

    Younger players will play earlier than the recent past... with the open spaced game.   So we might be able to play a chandler or other.

    I also have to say that over the entire round the umpiring has been really poor. I was reminded of that when I  just saw a blatantly  incorrect call for a throw against GWS. Even though the frees went our way against Port, there were far too many bad calls both eays and far too few for Gawn given the beating they gave him behind the ball.

      Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

    • REPORT: North Melbourne

      I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

      The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.

      The Demons are finally back at the MCG and finally back on the winners list as they continually chipped away at a spirited Kangaroos side eventually breaking their backs and opening the floodgates to run out winners by 6 goals.
