    Hunt and Spargo are two such players, They have deficits  and disposal is certainly one. However, I would rather see players have a real crack and who are always running and chasing or at the contest, irrespective of the score line or tempo of the game. 

    These two guys play with a passion for the contest that many others don't. And as I said somewhere else, you can see that these guys lift and inspire others. They are natural competitors who don't overthink situations or drop their bundle.  I was watching Spargo and whilst he had few possessions he was always running, chasing, giving opponents a bit of lip and hip, and chasing a Tiger over the boundary line. 

    I would have these guys in the side over more polished but less committed players.  They have the X factor. 

    Sorry I believe Spargs disposal is pretty good and agree with your comment in principle.

    Yes, he laid a brilliant tackle that Goodwin would've loved, but he did not provide even one dash from half back which is his point of difference as a player. Just an ineffective and nothing game from him.

    It would not surprise me if Hunty needs most of the season at Casey to get ontop of his ball use issues.  Last year was lost, for him to learn and develop, imo.

    It might take him another footy season to develop further ?

    Hunt could be great for us if we could find a position for him where he didn't have to make decisions. But I fear that those days are gone.

    Spargo's vision,  choices and disposal in close over relatively short distances are first class. He is able to create good opportunities for team mates.He also positions himself well to receive.

    Hunt's strengths are his ball winning ability, his speed to carry the ball and his long kicking. He is the territory man who has the potential to rate highly on the "metres gained" (another affectation of the statisticians and dumb commentators). Trying to convert him into a Salem clone will be counterproductive. All the forwards need to do is spread - the ball will fall near one of them. Frost is another who could prosper in this role.

    but as a defender I don't think Hunt does win enough of his own ball, that's the problem. when he had his breakout year he was going hard in the contest and defending strongly. now he seems to want to give his opponent a bit of space so he can also have space to receive the ball and run, and his strength in the contest isn't there either. 3 contested possessions and 7 uncontested in JLT1. he's a bit too one dimensional these days imo.

    Let's not be so hasty to criticise. At his best, Hunt is a weapon and we should encourage him to find his way back.

    The problem is that his greatest strength is not in the game plan. A lot of posters point out how we lack players who can break the line with pace and carry the ball. Its not what we do.

    We take possession and move the ball quickly by hand or foot. We bounced the ball an average of 4 times per game last year. Essendon were the clear leaders with 12, Richmond second with 8.5.

    Most of the time he runs his measure and needa to bang it onto his boot. It looks great when it comes off, but usually allows the defenders enough time to get in a good position.

    That's contrary to his pre season so far which has been great Sunday didn't ruin that.  He still might make Round 1 as we need pace from half back urgently.

    Yes I agree...  that its contrary to some early practice match reports to say that...  but I put more store on where he's coming from,  than an intra-club friendly hitout.

    As I said... It would not surprise me,  'IF' it does.

    Pruess will be better with Gawn in the side he was excellent against the Pies. Nankervis isn't an unknown he's a premiership ruckman.

    He didn't play on Nankervis. Nankervis played as a forward. Preuss was matched up against Ivan Soldo.

    When the ball is sent in quickly and he's getting blocked while someone else is going for the mark, i reckon he needs to back up a bit and then take a run up to try and mark. This would make the block much more obvious

    Saw in the game day thread that someone called him BP. So along the villain moniker it lead to Mario’s nemesis:

    Brayden Pruess > BP > Fuel Bowser > Bowser

    my criticism of Hunt is based on the way he's been playing for the last 18 months, not just the JLT match.

    He did not play on Nankervis, he was matched up against Soldo and Balta. Considering he is going to be a liability up forward, he needs to  offer more than just competing when it's his turn in the ruck.

    To say he was excellent against the Pies, is a huge stretch. He showed a few encouraging signs, but his lack of mobility was on display in that encoutner. 

    We will give him another go this week, but I highly doubt Goodwin has him penciled in for round 1.

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.       The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.
