This draft is packed full of midfielders and smaller types. Unfortunately there isn't much in the way of tall forwards, which is an area we are lacking in. Will be interesting to see who we wind up with in the top 5 and if we can land a small forward like Weightman with our second round pick (if we still have it heading into the draft). A classy skilled midfielder with pace and a quality small forward would be a good result.

i reckon we might be better off trading for talls.. bit harder to confirm their ability based on previous drafts. i like the idea of picking up a small fwd with our second pick though.. there’ll be a few about them by the looks.

Midfield, midfield, fwd midfield. They should be our first 4 picks. 

Ball use , Pace & Leadership  - should be mandatory in selections. No more big one paced inside Bulls.

Kemp plays both forward and midfield, and he's a great size for either IMO. When in the midfield, is he far more inside? Could he be developed to be outside midfielder? He's certainly got pace and kicking skills, though with his size it would seem odd to wind up an outside midfielder. He's right at the top of our list though Id imagine, as he could improve our forward half and develop to be a gun mid in time.

Serong does seem a good safe bet as a small forward/midfielder. Definite Robbie Gray type, and would immediately improve our forward half. He's a quality footballer who just needs to build consistency and build his body.

Ash I'm not sure about. Definitely capable as a quick rebounding half back, but I haven't seem enough of him in the midfield to know whether he could be the outside mid we're crying out for. If he doesn't have scope to be a midfielder, then I'm not sure he's the best option, as our backline is well stocked compared to the front half.

In terms of potential, Kemp seems a level above. He needs to learn to find more ball, but he's got all the attributes to be a special player.

I had heard Dylan Stephens (SA) was meant to be a decent prospect? He’s also ranked 9th on the link furious d posted. I’m hoping the Crows will think picking a local will offset the difference? ?

Serong, Kemp or Stephens for mine, leaning towards the 3rd.

if we weren't so damn slow I'd say kemp but I can't see how we can say no to lachlan ash due to his speed.

I love Ash's speed - it's elite and the best of this draft class. My concern with Ash is his balance of ball winning. His contested possessions are only at 20%, which is well below average. All other forecasted top 10-20 picks playing in similar positions are 40%-65%.

There's been a clear trend of players with low contested possession numbers at underage levels failing to adjust at AFL level. Off the top of my head, first round picks that had low contested possession counts and haven't stepped up are Toumpas, Morton, Aish, Lang, Pickett, Ah Chee, Lovell, T Menzel, Mayes.

For that reason I'd prefer others such as Serong or Kemp, but there's no doubting Ash's speed and kicking is enticing.

I wouldn’t say that Kemp is slow, he has good acceleration for a taller bloke, plus as he has displayed in this years carnival, he is capable of playing in the middle, as well as forward and back as he showed last year.

Good call DD. I have watched Kemp in 4 matches and he has real speed. He can win the footy and use it. He can start forward and then move into midfield.  Reminded me of a young Dangerfield.  I hope he is available.  I think he has risen up like a young Clayton Oliver. Kemp is also a good country Vic boy from the Wimmera.

 Not with pick 3-4.  NEED quality midfielder with a low pick.  There is at least 8-10 before Flanders. 

Brodie Kemp reported to have done his ACL. 

Huge blow as I had him in the frame for a top 3-4 pick and he would be the type of player that the Dees need. 

He still might be the one but JT might go with Lachlan Ash as the safer pick. 

It’s likely the Dees will finish the horrendous season at 17th.

So it’s either Rowell or Anderson.

They're only asking for PP because the top 2 picks are friends and from the same club re retention. And the media are pushing it. Do you think our club will actually say something to the AFL and demand the 2nd pick ? Or just sit there and let ourselves be you know whatted and be relegated to pick 3

End of round 1 only - stuff friends argument.

just accept it - we're finishing second last and getting pick three

there's no way gc17 won't have their priority wish granted; they're an expansion club who need all the leg-ups they can get

it's got nothing to do whether our club protests or not - it's irrelevant, because the afl will ALWAYS favour expansion club wishes over protecting the integrity of the competition

it would be hilariously typical / awful if we finish second last, get pick three, and pick the bloke who has just done his acl cos he has 'the most upside' rather than going for someone who can immediately impact and play, like a serong or what have you

Surely we have learned from years gone by the folly of expecting an early pick to contribute meaningfully in their first season?

I have no issue picking Kemp or anyone else with an LTI if they are the best available.

yes, well, i was being facetious - it'd just be 'so melbourne' to finish second last, be shunted to pick 3 (or later) with a priority pick or two being granted to a franchise, and then with our pick get someone who is set to miss the entire year with an acl
