The AFL love two things more than pretty much anything else (aside from cash):

1. Poorly thought out rules
2. Acronyms/Initialism

And now with the pre-season supplement selection period which they've dubbed the SPP they have both.

Any player who has been delisted or previously been through a National Draft can now be signed as a rookie from December until March as long as teams have an open spot.

That's fair enough for Mumford and Clark, guys who have previous retired or being delisted and have played for years.

It makes less sense for 19 year olds over looked in last years draft who should now enter this years draft, but as far as I can tell there's no rule stopping them 

Luke Foley from WA might be the best of the 19 year olds this year and a draft pick in the 20-40 range. I propose we get on the phone ASAP and advise him to pull out of the draft. We'll rookie him in December and promise him a  hefty pay rise in a year or two.

In a more likely scenario it also means for someone like Jay Lockhart or another mature age player we might fancy we can advise them to withdraw from the draft and sign with us in December.

    Is it just me or is Essendrug being gifted a great deal lately, from favorable draw to rule tweaks to accommodate bringing in an experienced ruckman.

    Looks like initial reports were incorrect and it will be just for previously AFL listed players. In which case Corey Wagner might be the most obvious candidate for Melbourne. A watch this space for the next few days and maybe a move will be made after the national draft but prior to the rookie draft if it's possible to do so that late.

    Yes RTG, it does kind of sound like a very Essendrug kind of rule, perhaps the could sign up Steven Dank to their strength and conditioning/high performance team under the basis of a delisted free agent for their football department.

    I think this is actually a good rule because it rewards clubs that put some initiative into recruiting for their second tier clubs. 

    In the case of Corey Wagner there was the fact that his brother was already at the club but we clearly gave him the chance to play at state league level and he performed by having a consistent season and by winning the B & F at Casey. 

    From what I saw of him, he was better than some of our depth players in the VFL and, had he been on our list, might have snuck in some games at senior level. 

    I hope we offer him a contract and he becomes our first SPP on December 1.

    You are correct, a player can walk to any other club as a rookie, has to wait a year if being rookied to the same club.

    Welcome Corey,

    Good physical attributes and sure to benefit being back full time after losing that chance with North. 

    Not sure if he has the skills to make it long term but he’s a nice depth addition, effectively replacing Kent. 

    My only question is are teams limited to one rookie addition or can we leave another spot open after the draft and add another player over summer?

    pardon my ignorance but what are the rules these days for rookies playing in the AFL side. Do you still need a long term injury and then an elevation etc

    This is the only way you can get on a list now. We have a full rookie list. We will be playing 1 short this season until the mid season draft opens up, so no Partington or any delisted free agent.

    He didn't get picked up by anyone.

    Hopefully he can go for another year at Casey and you never know he could do what Marty Hore did and get picked up in the mid season draft or end of season draft.

    I reckon all clubs are scouring players who missed being drafted to line them up for next years pss.  They are Free Agents and can sign with club of choice.

    And, it is mighty attractive for clubs:  recruit player as an 'A' Rookie (they can play seniors immediately) then promote them to the seniors, if a list spot is available.

    My reading of pss is that Tim Kelly (Geelong), Bailey Fritsch etc etc would qualify so no draft pick required.  Clubs will soon squirrel away such players until the pss and get them free.  

    This pss rule, academy draft points, trading away high picks, and clubs (eg Sydney, North, WBD) bending the live trading rules (with the AFL's blessing, because it pleased the broadcasters) to get their 'Tied' players on the cheap have significantly changed the recruiting/drafting landscape. 

    And, collectively have opened a pandora's box of potential manipulation.

    I think it would be worthwhile getting some clarity about the rule. As I understand it, a player must have previously nominated for the draft or retired, delisted himself or was delisted and spent a year out of the AFL.

     It’s not clear to me whether a player who nominated for the first time in this year’s draft would therefore be eligible. It makes a difference because, if say, one of our ruckmen gets injured before 15 March, could we rookie a ruckman from this year’s under 18 crop who didn’t get drafted?

    So, in effect, the Casey Demons could recruit a young ruckman like Riley Bowman from the Stingrays, give him an apprenticeship and then rookie him next year in the PSSP.

    Handy to know that.

     I think we can keep an eye on who Casey recruits now.

    Hmm, not sure.  I'm guessing not as the player hasn't spent a year out of the AFL.   But then again, the AFL seem to be making decisions on the run with pss and live-trading and wait till asked about a specific situation. 

    Clarification is certainly required.

    We still have 1 spare spot don't we? 39 senior list and A 4 rookies? Can we not add an extra rookie spot via this rule at some stage between Dec and March or is it one per side only?

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
