When he’s playing well he can kick 2-3 goals, apply a shitload of pressure in the forward line, provide some nice link up play down the field and his delivery by foot is excellent. The problem is he’s very prone to having 4 disposal games where you completely forget he’s playing. He’s decent depth and would come very cheap. Who knows, a functioning forward line might bring the best out of him"

From what I've observed, Cheny probably isn't a superstar, but is a pretty solid, reliable type and has only just turned 29.  Whilst he was probably never quite in their best 22, Cheny obviously knew what was required and executed well when called up as a backup player for several top teams in Hawthorn  (during their prime) and Adelaide.  I paid a bit of attention to him when I re-watched our 2018 away game Vs Adelaide the other night and he had pretty tidy foot skills, made good decisions with the ball and has always been a pretty tough, hard and tenacious defender like Nev.

Assuming we could sign him on for a reasonable price, he could be both a good insurance policy and also a mentor down at Casey.  I guess Wagner, JKH and Keilty and Petty would be the other depth backline players we have, but none of them would have the same experience as Cheny and all could probably benifit from playing beside him at Casey.  Don't know if he is future coaching material or not.

Part of me also likes the sentiment of him ending up back in Red and Blue, since I always thought when we moved him on, that he was a goer, which I think has been somewhat proved since.

It's so long ago, I've forgotten how it played out, but did we "move him on" or did he choose to leave? Choosing to leave during our basket-case years would hardly be a surprise.

He's to slow upstairs in terms of decision making and IMO just not cut for AFL. Good solid WAFL/VFL/SANFL footballer

It's looking that way.

Will be fascinating to see how this is going to pan out. We have a minimum of 4 places to fill on the main list to make it 38 and we only have 4 useful picks. If we do that we will have to rookie 4 players to go with the 2 we currently have to make the total minimum list of 44. They have to be drafted which means the last 2 will be very late in the rookie draft. No matter how good JT is that's going to be a major stretch. Which makes you wonder if they think those gambles would be better than 1 or 2 of the remaining DFA's. 

Maybe there's some pick trading planned perhaps with some of next year's picks to grab one or two more decent picks. Although that could have happened by now if it was the plan.

I don't think it's mandatory to fill the rookie list to make it to 44. The new pre-season signing period and mid season draft require vacant rookie positions.

Correct.

In Michael Gleeson’s Age article, The Age AFL to introduce mid-season rookie draft in 2019 he says that in addition to the new mid-season rookie draft the AFL is “also set to allow clubs to add a player to their rookie list during the pre-season if they have a spot available or if they lose a player to a long-term injury or retirement”.

This will apply to the period between December 1 and March 15 at which time clubs could place players “on one of three inactive lists: a long-term injury list, a season-ending list or a retired player list”.

So you can leave a spot vacant at the drafts to allow yourself  time to determine what player you want and you have a few months in which to do it.

I'd look at Cheney for coverage, but also as he has a connection with Lever. That would help if we were forced to pick him through an injury to Nev. He was also at Lever's wedding so knows the boys I'd say. With DJ now gone, who was looking to be the Nev backup, I think there's a slight need.

I think Neade could be useful also, he's what's missing from Jeffy. His forward pressure could be a big bonus, but needs to work on consistency.

I just saw Michael Apeness was delisted with a contract for next year and a promise of a rookie spot.

Does a delisting not void the contract from the players point of view? 

Constantly injured but I think he's talented. Can or should we steal him from Freo and have a talented 3rd string ruck/forward?

There's another thread about the value of player contracts and whether players are no longer sticking to their side of the bargain. This is the other side of the same coin. Also, I can't understand how a player's contract today doesn't include an obligation for the club to keep the player on the primary list (except in exceptional circumstances, such as a player failing a drug test or requiring disciplinary sanction).

 Is there any chance that there will be a frenetic period of last minute wheeling and dealing that lands a swag of DFAs at various clubs or is it all over, red rover for them?

It seems to me that this entire concept of DFAs is going the same way as the pre season draft and the dodo. Gawn.

All quiet.  Media must be disappointed in the delisted free agent action so far.  Clubs seem to be banking on getting 5-6 picks in this super draft.
