THE BERN

Bernie Vince, who announced his retirement effective at the end of season, has had a celebrated career at the club. He arrived from Adelaide when the team was almost down and out, raised the banner early when he took on and beat former teammate Patrick Dangerfield in Adelaide and continued to lift the club on its upward journey under Paul Roos and then Simon Goodwin. Played more than 100 games with both Adelaide and Melbourne and also won best and fairest awards at both clubs. A wonderful achievement!

Not the greatest way to go out in a losing VFL Grand Final. He gave his heart and soul to the club and will be known as a champion of the Melbourne Football Club.

Was re-watching our game Vs Carlton the other day and that hit Bernie put on Daisy Thomas was an absolute ripper.

Hard to imagine that Bernie won our B&F just 2 or 3 seasons ago.  It's a shame Bernie dropped away so quickly this year.  Would have loved to have seen this bloke play finals for us.

This is from Bernie https://www.playersvoice.com.au/bernie-vince-beginning-not-end/2/

A great read.  My two favourite parts are:

  1. the section on RISE OF THE DEES where he reflects on how things changed from when he arrrived.
  2. when he told teammates he was retiring:  "Michael Hibberd didn’t make it any easier. He was crying in the front row the whole time I was addressing the boys. I was looking at him thinking, ‘Mate, are you walking away as well?’ The boys joked that he was only crying because he was losing his drinking partner...But it was lovely. It will stay with me forever".  That Bernie and Hibberd played together for only two seasons speaks volumes about the comradeship built among the players.

Bernie's love for the dees really comes across.  He is another player who came to us when we were a basket case and ploughed thru the tough times and gave his all.

Love everything about Bernie!  Will miss him but glad there are plans to keep him around the club.

I'm glad that footy has not become so sanitized thay the players can't enjoy a quite drink together at the appropriate time.  I recon Bernie would be a great bloke to have a few beers with and Hibbo too by the sounds of it.

What a legend!

Imagine a 27 year old Bernie running around with Clarrie, Gus, Viney and Harmes next year.

Bernie Vince sits alongside Russell Robertson and Travis Johnstone as my favourite ever Demon.

What I liked about Robbo and Bernie was the dignified way they finished their careers. No recriminations, acceptance that the end had come, and such a positive attitude of their careers and their attitude toward the club.

Bernie was very good for the Demons, really made a difference in our growth & improvement. Seems like a great bloke!

He looked pretty relaxed playing golf and having a few beers and snacks at Riversdale GC yesterday afternoon!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
