A mate of mine that Is on the recruiting team for an AFL club mentioned that he likes one called Will Golds or similar at Oakleigh Chargers I think.  Thought he represents value for a late Pick.

Any thoughts?

Brother Tim was on the original GWS list but played only 6 games. Then rookied by Collingwood but only played in their VFL team.

Agree with most of that. Ely Smith seems a man amongst boys, has he played against men like Clarry did? McHenry looks like a scrappy school kid, hard to bring that to AFL level unless you're Toby Greene.

Worse case scenario for Riley CD is he plays 100 games on a back flank but whether he's a gun midfielder is up for debate. Williams is risky as all talls are, agree I'd rather get a running player first unless there's belief he'd make a standout ruck down the track.

McKenzie looks a solid no fuss wing/half back, ideally another for the 2nd pick or later. Butters is smooth as butter, he'll be gone.

Zac Foot is one I'd really like. Reminds me of Rory Atkins who is one of my favourite players to watch when he's on. I think he's a later round prospect with class and footy smarts. Good endurance. I wouldn't be upset if we got him in the 2nd round.

Ely Smith doesn’t have half the polish of Clarry.

Zac Foot is a really interesting one. Looks great in highlights, although I understand consistency is his issue. Hearing his backstory, he just feels like a Jason Taylor pick.

Not sure why most of these “draft experts” don’t rate O’Halloran higher. I think he could easily be taken around the top ten.

Exactly the question I've been asking. Watching him alone, his talent is top 10 material. I have my fingers crossed that he makes it all the way to 23 and we snare him.

Bargain.

We need run, but is another defender the answer? I really think Salem and Hibberd will be more unlocked this year now that May has joined and Lever will return from injury. I'm all for taking the best player available but we do need an outside midfielder and to refill our forward stocks.

Kennerley's the one for mine if Sturt & O'Halloran are gone, but McKenzie's not a bad option if it pans out that way. Seems like there's a lot of love for Tom Sparrow too.

Yes it’s mids at 23 and 28 or 29 and 32 adjusted after father sons and academy selections

Hoping for O’halloran and/or Sturt.

Thinking more likely Jacob Kennerley, Tom McKenzie, Fraser Turner and Will Hamill will get called at one of our picks.

Ely Smith and Turner for mine. Inside and outside mid.

Yes this is almost a mirror of my post under Bailey Williams.  I was hoping for Williams but Taylor’s comments reflect we will target young midfielders.

Ely Smith is interesting.  Clearance kick. Handballs rather than kicks to create.  With Viney and Oliver and then Smith, we would rule the contested clearances.

Hoping for class of O’halloran and then pace of McKenzie.

What do you like about him Jay? I see a neat player but apart from a little extra height does he have more to offer than someone like Billy Stretch? I'm getting very Dave McKay vibes about Kennerley.

Maybe not the same endurance but McKenzie seems to have more burst and maybe more penetration on his kicking. The other thing that stood out from his highlights was excellent hands on both sides and the creativity to get it to guys in space.

I see the trademark Jason Taylor grunt in Sparrow. Good athleticism too. Worry about a lack of polish. Where does Tom Joyce rank in the inside mids list, he looks full of class.

Yes I’m a fan of Tom Joyce. I reckon the Eagles might grab him at around their pick 24-26 , adjusted for fatherson and academy picks.

O’halloran remains the real standout are 24-27 range.

Whilst I think more running mids are preferred (Mckenzie, Kennerley, Turner, Hamill), the Taylor-style is Ely Smith and Sparrow.  Grunt.

Funnily enough I was reminded of McKay when watching Kennerley too, though I reckon Kennerley projects as a more consistent ball winner

I think Kennerley’s got a bit more depth on his kick than someone like Billy and he had a more consistent season than McKenzie. Although I really like McKenzie’s potential (his upside arguably greater than Kennerley), I think Kennerley's game is closer to what we need right now.

I also like that Kennerley was able to hit the scoreboard on a regular basis as well. A good finisher from around 50, which would be invaluable if he were to bring that to senior AFL footy.

Not often you come across an inside ball winner with the burst speed that Sparrow has, so can see the appeal. The polish could come when the game slows down for him (with experience), but that level of competitiveness is virtually impossible to teach.

Tom Joyce has plenty of fans too, there were some whispers that Freo might look to grab him with their 2nd or 3rd rd pick. He’s probably gotten lost amongst the 5 or so very highly rated SA boys.

I would flat out wet my pants if Twomey’s updated Phantom came to fruition. What a time to be alive!

If we were able to also draft a fully fit Bytel as well, that would definitely help our midfield, would be happy with Bailey Williams with our second pick as well.

Wow. Yes updated Twomey has MFC grabbing O’halloran who is my #1 target. Ely Smith is the bolter for Twomey.

O’Halloran suits us perfectly.  A classy mid.   Then next pick we could grab McKenzie, Hamill, Turner or Kennerley.

I don’t for a second believe that O’Halloran will fall into our laps...

however there is a lot of quality left around our pick and I feel like we’ve got a good chance of unearthing a Luke Parker type pick.

Hell, O’Halloran will probably be available and we’ll go for someone else. I just feel he’s a can’t miss prospect & should go much earlier.

Barring a trade the Eagles will effectively have picks 1 and 3 of the second day which might mess with our plans a bit. Any obviously slide will have clubs calling the Eagles and offering a decent deal and given they have the 2 picks they are likely to entertain offers. They have the advantage of the night to sleep on it and negotiate a trade. Makes it less likely that we'll secure a slider.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
