The problem with that is Bell's a much harder target to hit.

But IMO we'd have been demanding two first rounders anyway. A top 5 pick with another early to mid first rounder. We didn't need to give them any leverage.

I disagree that it makes them come up with a strong deal. They need to in order to make us come to the table at all, given Hogan's contracted and we don't have to trade him.

Further, Freo have external pressures on them (the FD and the administration) to step up and get their members signed on for 2019. Their cross-town rivals have just won their fourth flag, Freo are still on the duck and have been on the decline since 2014ish.

We didn't need to put heat on them. They were already in the fire.

Exactly. So why stuff around trying to play mind games. Just be up front and say this is what we want, if you're not prepared to pay it don't waste our time.

It’s coming down to this:

1. Accept pick 5 & 23 from Freo for Hogan

2. Hold out for 5 & 11 and walk away if not met.

What will the club do?

What should the club do?

Going to go down to the wire folks. Real line ball call given all the circumstances. Wednesday it’s Mahoney v Bell with guns drawn outside the OK Corral.

Have Freo actually offered picks 5 & 23?

They don't even have pick 5

It’s pretty clear. The club is happy to have Hogan stay. We want him to sign long term. We tried to get permission to use our first round next year for May but didn’t. I wouldn’t be surprised if the outcome is Hogan signs on for 3 to 4.

Not yet but you can bet your grandma’s antique collection they will!

If it was the previous hierarcy at Freo, we would have had this deal done.

But like alot of people have stated Neale is holding up everything.

There are so many other permeations @EnterTheDragon --->although I enjoy your commentary along the way as trying to take things from a birdseye view - its like you're Bruce or Bristle on Ch7yourself trying to pump the masses into watching a game that has blown out...

We need to stand our ground and not give in to this mob. It's 2 first round picks or it's nothing.

We need to fill 10 spots on our list so we need to start to think about where to go from here, or we will run out of time.

There are other permutations no doubt but it’s pretty clear what Bell is trying to do. Come back to this page next week on Wednesday and I’m confident I’ll have been right. Whether anyone will bother sifting back through 45 pages of our waffle is another matter!

I will be that pedant.

Mahoney has explained it quite plain and simply, not sure what some of you are still going on about.

If Hogan leaves its because we got what we wanted, if not, then he stays. End of story.

Would you walk into your local Ferrari dealership and offer $2000 for an F40 because that’s all you have?

The initial offer wasn’t a way of ‘softening’ us up, Bell’s just an idiot.

Bulldogs into May for pick 7 apparently

I'm OK with that!  There seems to be a lot of obsession to get Steven May but he is not pick 7 material, and miles away from Jesse.  With May you know exactly what you'll get, a lock down defender with plenty of positives, but one huge negative, he turns it over more than almost every defender in the league.  In todays game where turnovers are the major source of scoring (anyone remember the prelim first half), I just don't see why we would consider giving up a high first round pick this year for May.   He turns it over more than Sam Frost who at least balances his clangers with line breaking score assists.  May had almost 4 clangers a game last year - only two MFC players had more being Oliver and Brayshaw who average 2x possessions and are inside mids where it is hot.  Regardless of what happens with JH, if we on trade a high first round pick, imo time will show it as one of the worst trades we have ever done.

Are you happy with that though. There's no way I can put up with Oscar Mcdonald for another season. Especially with teams like richmond having lynch and riewoldt.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didnt they offer their second rounder "next year" - so would be ~25 or worse?

Have you even seen May play. He is an elite defender, with elite speed and is a better user of the ball than Frost, Oscar Mcdonald and Lever so he would be a massive upgrade. May plays for the worst team in the comp, where he has no support at all. He would thrive in a team like ours.

I’ve actually tried that and walked out with a key ring and a show bag.

Jesse wants to return home to WA. Rumours of “another club” are very flimsy at this stage.

He is worth close to it. Pick 23 would not get Lobb done for them.

Ha. If Lobb is worth close to 11, then Jesse is worth picks 1, 2 and next years first rounder.

Well we all have different opinions. I like Oscar and am prepared to back our own. He is still fairly young and has a lot of improvement in him. Frosty is a goer although at times he can be heart in mouth.

It has nothing to do with what we want. Mahoney has explained what will happen, accept it.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

The Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, falling to 0–4 after a more spirited showing against the Cats at Kardinia Park. Despite the improved effort, they went down by 39 points, and the road ahead is looking increasingly grim.
