would you accept pick 5, Darcy tucker and Ed Langdon for hogan? A mate put that idea to me and I don’t mind it simply because we have lost a good amount of our depth. May fills the key defensive need and tucker and Langdon are good enough to challenge strongly for a place in our best 22

No pick 5 pick 32, Langdon and next years second rounder.

Port and Adelaide are desperate to move up the draft for the SA boys

Pick 5 goes to Port for 11 & 12

11 & the second Rounder goes to the Suns for May

I don’t blame them for prioritising the guy who absolutely wants to go there over the guy who can’t make up his mind. I’m sure if hogan declares his intentions that’ll change very quickly

Who says they are prioritising Lobb over Hogan? All spin. They are desperate for Hogan but their hands are tied until the Neale impasse is broken.

The thing that amazes me about a large number of posters on this thread is they seem to think that the MFC have a burning desire to keep young Jessie.

From my seat in the outer the FD quite clearly don't.

Have any of you out there considered the possibility that the MFC might have initiated this trade?

Have you considered that Jessie did not initiate this trade and might not be hot on the idea?

That's a good question. It would be easy to say it wouldn't and that all recruiting managers would prepare for any scenario by studying the whole talent pool but that's probably a bit simplistic. There's only so much time and so much traveling you can do. Then again maybe he did, but it still changes the psychology a bit.

Yeah. I imagine he wandered into Mahoney's office a few times asking if there's any way we could move into the first round... Think back to 2015 when, late in the trade period, we swapped 6 and our 2016 first rounder for 4 and 10... then swapped 10 for 7, and that got us Oliver and Weed.... That's what I anticipate happening if we end up with juicy draft capital after a Hogan trade.... Just cos we end up with 5+6, or 5+9 or whatever... doesn't mean we then start throwing those at SA clubs. I always have in the back of my head that I'd love to sling an early pick to, say, Port... for their next couple of first rounders. The SA clubs are in love with Rankin and Luko...

I do sort of get that one. It's not that they want Jesse less... they just know they're not prepared to hand over that much stuff without waiting and checking on their priorities. These other mid range players like Lobb get done quicker normally.... less moving parts. Less pressure.

There's the public fodder statement by the club. That's fine but it won't be real pass line.

Am sure the club will accept a deal irrelevant of poster's views...if it meets what the club actually wants as an outcome.

What, you don't think JM will run the deal past DL before accepting?

Pretty much all the media has been the opposite of what you say. Club+Goody+everyone said they had no interest in trading him. Then everyone's saying it's been brought up by Jesse and his agent. Not saying you're wrong, just that the tiny morsels we get from the club, and the absolutely disgraceful state of footy media suggest that it was Jesse driven.

Agree, they want both and need picks.  Fremantle needs to decide if the want to play hardball on a midfielder that wants out or get the trade done that will see them land Lobb and Hogan.  I reckon Peter Bells ego will get in the way.

I don't remember any of those people saying don't go Jessie. If they have I stand corrected, can you supply the statements?

Yet another day........so whats the situation with Neale? Going not going?

There is still plenty of time Dr. Days to go. We all just want a quick result and at this time of the year that seldom happens. Everyone is jockeying for position.

Of course they will...of course

Having said that, I'd be disappointed if we didn't wind up with a first round pick you use at the draft from this trade. Yes we'll need to use one to trade in May, but pick 5/6 is too much for May. We should be going to draft with pick 5/6 and trading pick 14 or so for May. May is a decent fullback, but not a world beater like he is being made out as by some on here and in the media. In fact his past 1-2 years have been poor-average. A few years ago he was very good, but has dropped off and wouldn't be in the top 5 full backs at present. I'd be angry if the club traded a top 10 pick for him.

The Suns will not accept a pick over 10 for May. They have no incentive to. The AFL will ensure they receive Band1 compo for him next season if he goes. That’ll be a pick in the top 5 of next year’s draft.

Like it or not pick 5 from Freo will come into play in our acquisition of May should this trade eventuate.

He is in the top 5 fullbacks in the AFL. Wouldn’t be a single industry insider who would share your view that he’s not.

Can you clarify? Do you mean the statements from the club claiming Jesse was a required player? If so, they came about, I think, about a month before the end of the H&A season. Jesse had his exit interview, all was well, then a week before trade period starts all hell breaks lose and he's been the biggest news in footy for the last fortnight. The club hasn't said anything in interviews about wanting to trade him, aside from discussing what a potential trade would look like if and when he comes to us saying he wants out.

The trouble is they got rewarded last year when they held out and then got pick 2 for Mav Weller. That stupid deal might have emboldened them. No way are we as dumb / deperate as GC were back then and no way will nay club be pressured by them after that.. So Bell can micromanage all he likes. In the end, If he stalls and then gets neither,  he faces massive pressure himself. It would be an an epic fail to start off his tenure as recruiting manager..oops CEO. People will wonder why he got involved in the first place.  If this starts getting close to the wire the heat well and truly comes back on him...ego or no.

I am impressed that AI has now got so advanced in tele-prompters that the device is deducing the news in advance of it happening.

Did he see also on the teleprompter the impacting meteorite warning that alleges it is arching, at thousands of kilometres per hour, towards Earth to very possibly hit us by Friday morning?

Whilst the technician apologised for the low maintenance factor involved, there are more than half a dozen cockroaches smiling bitterly about the transmitted result of a standard game of 'Pot Black' snooker sent on that link from the BBC.

I'm baffled that there are fans who would be hesitant to give pick 5 for May.

Our list is nearly in the contender sweet spot, there is no potential draftee that will help us win a flag more than May over the next 3 years. Even if there was, you are no guarantee to get them in what is almost a lucky draw anyway.

I would be livid if JM didn't subject a potential trade to the DL test prior to signing off on it. We would like the chance to express an opinion or veto it.

I'm of the inclination that someone's hand has been forced.

I've no problem with that if it suits the club.

Like your good self OD I observe a overwhelming groupthink from many as to the worth and benefits of retaining Jesse. And then there's this somewhat opposite script playing out before us.

Now I would suppose the club is best situated to know what's what and how to proceed.

So why is the MFC pursuing a course so different to what many here would prescribe ?

Why from some quarters come suggestions Freo isn't all gooey and rah rah as it was ?

Freo chasing Jesse since he got here....now they can have him...they get butterflies and wobbly knees ?

Bits to this puzzle we don't know.

And we wait.

I think he'll go home. I think the club will be satisfied. I think many will disatisfied but I think that's only because their metric isn't the club's.

I agree bb and us on the outside don't hold all the knowledge.

Maybe we should start a Lachie Neale to Brisbane thread so we can endlessly hypothesize and anticipate that and then come back to this when the trade is done?

But then again I'm sure some people would rather cut their toe nails with a machete than lose the rapid pace that this thread is going at..

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
