After listening to Rosich the other day, I find it hard to believe any diarrhea that froths from his mouth, or any of them to be honest, even our club, all smoke and mirrors.

Josh Mahoney has arrived for start of #AFLTrades. Says preference is to keep Aaron vandenBerg, despite an interest to move to Sydney. Will have conversation with STK this morning on Dean Kent. Waiting on answers from Jesse Hogan and Steven May

How have we landed ourselves in such tight financial cap situation with such a young list? If we can't afford May without losing Hogan, are we in some strife going forward? Definitely sounds tighter than it should be.

I don’t think financially we can’t afford May without losing Hogan, it’s more that we have no trade currency, which we don’t.

I hope that's the case. The industry seems to think we don't have much space left though. Hopefully we get 2 first rounders and 2 A graders then. We also have next years first rounder too so unsure that we don't have the picks tbh.

Financially we can afford both, the evidence for that is the offer we made to GAFF

the reality is that we can’t trade our 2019 pick unless we replace it and even then we’d need to include a quality player to be any chance without hogan leaving.

I'm unsure that we made an offer to Gaff, there is no evidence of that anywhere. North said this morning that they were the only club to sit down with Gaff.

Josh Mahoney said we badgered them for a long period of time but even still, why express an interest if we couldn’t afford him anyway?

Probably because he was under the impression that Hogan would go this year. He also said we didn't intend to pick May up until next year.

We can't trade next years first round pick due to trading first round picks from previous years. Unless we trade out a player (Hogan) we don't have currency to bring in high end talent such as May, Shiel, etc. We would have to apply to the AFL to use next years first round pick. Even if the AFL allowed it and we proposed to offer it up for May, it may not be enough to convince GC to trade May. They are likely to want something now for him rather than wait for next year unless they can on trade it for a player which I think is unlikely.

There are rumours we have applied or going to. Cats seem removed from this rule also?

We can't land May if we don't trade Hogan and get first round picks.

While we have our 2019 first round pick still, we are not allowed to trade it due to the rule of not having used a first round pick at draft for 4 years. That means we need picks, as we have to go to draft next season (with pick 18 ;)).

You'd hope there is an official announce from Hogan or his management very soon, as it's now trade week and we need to get the ball rolling if this is actually going to happen. No use dragging it out getting the trade done at the last hour, as we need to use the compensation we get for losing him to land May etc.

Tom Browne on Twitter:

Can’t wait for dockers comments on what they’ll give up for Hogan. I sense not nearly as much as Melbourne want. The implication, Collingwood still a 10-30% chance for May

How would Collingwood have the currency to trade in May? They won't have a top 10 pick.

Well, well, well. I thought we  had asked Hogan to make his mind up before trade started and that we were assured by him and his manager that he would inform the club of his intentions prior to te commencement of trade week. It has clearly not happened and any 11th hour deals will now ultimately mean we are going to be hard pressed to facilitate a deal that lands us May. Even if, even if a deal is done on Hogan which gets us two top 10 picks, if this is drawn out til the end of next week, we will be looking at taking picks to the draft, which is nt what we want. I cannot understand why Hogan has not contacted the club and informed them.

Yes I believe they haven't used a first round pick in the draft for 3 years. This year will be the first time they have used a first rounder since 2014? They would have applied to use last years first rounder for a trade completed in 2016. Possibly Touhy?

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
