I'd say pure crumbing forward might be the greatest weakness but we did bring in a couple of late pick options there. Not sure how they'll break up the new players but I'd expect they spread them to different line groups, maybe even move the versatile guys around. Keen to see what they do with the wing but there's plenty of variety now.

Our major weakness is the small forward position Garlett is still our best small forward but is out of form. I hope the club give him every chance to find some form during the preseason.

We are a ruck short Bradtke should be full forward he is earmarked to be the replacement for Hogan.

I think it's a toss up, Re match-ups, which of Frost or OMc play in the team, at this stage.

I think the great thing is, Frost late in the season really started to develop his footy brain - he was more athlete before that. While OMac will develop more strength over the pre-season but is a naturally better footballer, which should give him a lot more confidence. When all are fit and they know how to play along side each other, we should have one of the best defensive units in the comp plus depth that won't just be cover.

This is why picking the 28Yr May is such a good get.  A strong smart player who suits us to a "T"...  now lets dot the "I's".

 

As you say, Frost got better in defence 2nd half of last year, even deep, sweeping the ball clear.

And Oscar was more composed up high in space, as far as the wing, I guess in our press.  The concern is on they're fast break after turnover, when we are caught out of position.  This is one reason why Garlett didn't play much last year IMO.

 

I think our selections in the draft were ideal, as we have to start to develop players now, so they can swap in for the likes of Jones, Lewis, Hibbo in a few years, and Jetta, also in a few years time.

 

Next season's trade draft period will be all about tall forwards and rucks, I reckon.

Looks good subject to a great pre-season and injury recoveries. I'd drop OMac for Frost - on game-style grounds and rebound value. Oscar may be better used as a forward in this team.

He did improve in that regard and year he played well against the Cats. But you might also look at the hawk's game where he made a couple of costly defensive blunders, the most obvious was misjudging the ball and allowing Gunston to take an uncontested mark. 

As i have posted previously the problem for frosty is he is not competing against Omac. He is competing against Lever, Hibberd, Hunt, Smith and to a lesser extent May. If he gets a game he will have well and truly earned it.

I'll take the coward's way out and reserve my best 22 until after Christmas.

What I am very pleased about however is the fact that we aren't posting teams of new draftees.  It wasn't that long ago that the teams posted in this thread would have had all of Sparrow, Jordan, Nietschke and Bedford in the '22.  It's incredible to think the weight of pressure and expectation that we as fans and a club used to lump on these young kids.

Hopefully a full and productive year in the VFL to grow and develop as footballers.

Totally agree, I would’ve like to have seen the club try to address that with the draft but perhaps they have someone earmarked for that role within the club. Garlett had a horrifically bad season but the magic is still in there and hopefully a new season will give him a chance to exorcise his demons. 

I’m liking the look of the team, we’ve taken a gamble that Weids will build on his late form of 2018 but the addition of May will hopefully go a long way to fixing our issues in defence. Round 1 can’t come sooner!

Fair calls Binman. We can only have so many tall defenders and Frosty has not been the coach's favorite. 

Insofar as being critical of his costly defensive blunders, l would put forward that few defenders are without blemishes. Nearly all have been caught out of position at some time, usually trying to cover a hole in defence. 

Defending is a thankless role. 

I expect Frosty will struggle to get a game but that does not mean he is less a defender than someone who does get a spot.

That's footy, that's life, it is not always fair and not always just.

As long as the back half can work well together, l really don't have any personal objection to who make up the 6.

Some good points. Agree about backline being a tough gig.

Mistakes are magnified and as you say all defenders make errors. 

Will be a mighty tough backline to get in and harder still to stay in. Frosty will give it a good crack. All power to him

Competition for spots is going to be intense assuming that we don’t have a spate of injuries. It will be a challenge for selectors to get the right balance between selecting and playing individuals on form and achieving team stability. It’s a good problem to have. We have come a long way.

Port will have 3 of Dixon, Westhoff, Lycett, Marshall or Ryder playing forward at various times depending on which of those 5 are left out. They will also run hard all day so plenty of players needed to rotate through the middle

Quite surprised how tough it is to select the 'right' team. Surprised that Frost is overlooked given the mobility of that backline set-up and his now improved linkage/challenge capabilities. It will be interesting to see how the post pre-season period strengthens those players available and notably, Lever, Harmes and Preuss, and KK.

Excellent side. Think Hunt on half back if back in form and has tightened his defensive skills, could provide a real springbord. Fritsch, Frost,  Hannan Garlett all very unlucky, but all will get their chances in 2019. The more l think about it the more l think the Preuss move is inspired. Very few sides have the cattle to match up on it, and lm sure it will allow Max to go to the next level. Extremely good value for an admittedly very good player in Tyson, but one surplus to our needs now.

Very strong top 28. This is the measure of a top team to have enough players to rotate through the year and not drop off.
