Shattering news for Fritsch but seems logical with the Eagles tall timber

Who'd have thought, just 6 weeks ago, that we'd be fiercely debating team composition in a Prelim? Nice problem to have.

For me it's No Change, and we let Omac, Frosty, Hibbo manage the talls with a chop out from Max and his support

But it's great that we have some depth to cater for team balance and injury cover

Given our high pressure midfield game, I think there's something to be said for letting Hibbo be the intercept more rather than taking a tall 1v1. Our high intensity can result in average entires for the opposition team, so having Hibbo ready to chop is always handy

if fritsch out is true - it sounds like goody wants to go all-in on winning this game from the midfield ...

What about the small timber? Ryan, Lecras and Rioli?

Apart from the fact that Smith trained with the main squad (as did a few others), were there any indications that Bayley knew this, or that Smith knew he was in?

At this stage do we have anything more than rumour or heresay?

source please

Goodwin said the Demons have planned to remove players out of the Casey line-up in the case they beat the Eagles on Saturday. We'll get to that , if that situation arise  Was in the paper today.

All things aside the potential Smith inclusion is risky from a fitness perspective alone I would have thought. How many games has he been back for?

Maybe Casey just want Fritta back to win them the flag on Sunday only for him to come in next week against the Tiges and Fritta can win two flags in the one year.

That would be nice.

Thought I saw a group of Casey players gather for a short time at training on Wednesday. They included Joel Smith.

I hope it is a rumour. Need the cohesion in the backline, Bayley Fritsch is reasonably tall and has had his position locked down for a while. Rumour or MFC "fugazi" at play.

In a  couple of hours we will know.

Post referred to 2 premierships, AFL and VFL.

Tough call for match committee. Obviously a difficult call to make but this is a preliminary final and match ups are critical - especially with their multi faceted forward line.

I am a big Fritsch fan but as others have mentioned freeing up Hibberd to be the interceptor and using Smith to cover a smaller forward might be the thinking. Smith also provides an option if Kennedy or Darling are getting away from Frost and OMac. Gotta have options in a prelim - especially with two players that could win the game off their own boot.

It might be Tyson who goes out yet but the more I think about it the more I like having Smith in.

I think other than the Petty selection, the FD IMO has done pretty well and we are in a Prelim after all.

I like it. Gawn cant do everything against those eagles behemoths and Frost and Omac will need all the support they can get. Seems sensible Fritsch unlucky.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
