Also a great article by Max in the Sun on the contribution Bernie and his family have made to our club. The gist  is that they have helped transform the club into a family, a band of brothers who live and breath for each other. A great read and gives great hope for our future.

He's right about Dominos too.

I used to think that you couldn't make a bad pizza before I ate a Dominos'.

I've been beginning to think you can't get a decent pizza anywhere anymore.

Thin base, gourmet, wood fired?

All code words for rubbish...

Seems everyone is cutting the inputs and increasing the price...

And yet, when you get away from the chains, the local pizzaria is likely to be a gem.  Found a local near my place that is half the cost of Crust, and 3 or 4 times better.  Agree on Domino's - awful.  May as well eat the box.

Franchising has started to push the decent family stores out.

I remember the pizza wars in Ballarat where Don Ciccio's were able to sell $5 pizzas with decent ingredients with a Dominos located next door to them. Us simple country folk were amazed at this and wondered how they did it.

It wasn't until they were busted for dealing amphetamines using the shop as a front could we see how they managed it.

Jessie's Pizza. Thick crust and a large under $10. My favourite.

Where's Jack's neck gone? He looks like Gladstone Small.

Cannot forget the Friday night special in the 70s, after drinking beer until closing time: a fully loaded Capricciosa pizza, 24-inch in diameter, with black olives, anchovies, ham, capsicum, 3 cheeses, basil, tomatoes and paste at the bottom, onions, pepperoni, fresh chopped mushrooms (no canned muck), more ham, more cheese and the price? $1.50 @ Venezia Pizza, Glenferrie Road, Malvern. In those days, you could drink a gutful for $15, all night ... And the footy on Saturday to follow with a pie and dead horse, donuts and more beer. Character building.

Friday nights at Chasers in the early 80’s - All you could drink for $12, $10 for girls until some [censored] complained it was discriminatory so it was bumped up to $12 for all

Friday October 5 Chasers... 7.30 onwards

”Hard & Fast” returns to celebrate 30 years

First time a read of Demonland has made me hungry.

Point 1) on topic: Max could do stand up, no worries.

Point 2) off topic: try making your own pizza, easy, cheap and twice as good as thin crust commercial crap.

George was at the door at Chasers,  Great memories!

Crinitis pizza in Carlton is expensive but sensational (Frankie Fingers with gorgonzola!) Otherwise Torino's Special in Heidelberg!

Love that place. Pizza by the metre! Would love to go there more often.

Permission to start 'The decent pizza' thread on the general board.

(In my best Lieutenant George voice)

I could never waste good money on drinks for girls, once I realised (after explanation from a mate and combined observation over two double-dates) that they were competing with one another for the fanciest drink mixed in a shaker, just for them.

They seldom enjoyed their drinks, but kept saying that those drinks were 'gorgeous!' yet never savoured the beverages as a bloke does with a beer.

If it had an exotic name, that was its prime importance.

So, we gave them a couple of 'Stingers", to test the theory; and then, explained why those drinks were called 'Stingers" (2 parts white creme de menthe, two parts cognac, one part vodka).

Y'see, goils, when we go up to Hotham for a ski in winter, a certain part of the anatomy gets very cold as we ski very fast. At the end of each run, we duck into the tavern for a Stinger, pop our frozen anatomical piece in our glass and then, back in the trousers. It really works, when the sting is gone, that anatomical monstrosity always feels better, warmer and ready to go.

The girls never elected to have a Stinger again. One of them took up an ordinary draught beer, realising her shallowness.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

It seems like only yesterday that these two sides faced off against each other in the centre of the continent. It was when Melbourne was experiencing a rare period of success with five wins from its previous six matches including victories over both of last year’s grand finalists.  Well, it wasn’t yesterday but it was early last month and it remains etched clearly in the memory. The Saints were going through a slump and the predicted outcome of their encounter at TIO Traeger Park was a virtual no-brainer. A Melbourne victory and another step closer to a possible rise into finals contention. Something that was unthinkable after opening the season with five straight defeats.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.
