The Casey Demons are home to Geelong VFL in Saturday’s Qualifying Final and the numbers should be boosted for this week at least by some players returning from injury and the fact that there is no need to hold any players over for the AFL because they have a bye. A win and a week’s break would be handy given the injury situation at Melbourne but it won’t be easy.

Is there a need to hold players over though? For example, Mitch Hannan could gain approval to play this week from the AFL because he didn't play seniors in round 23. But will the club hold him over as he will only have a 6 day break between games if he plays against Geelong??

Wouldn’t think so.  If we are basically going no change apart from injury replacements, we can play everyone possible at Casey, and if we have one or two potential ins off a 6 day break, I don’t think this is as important as getting game time (even finals experience at VFL level) into players.  I would probably have non game training for a Hannan and Viney, and the rest can fight it out for a spot.

Wonder if they will stuff up the ticket sales for this one.?

If they do, I'm jumping the fence at Casey Fields.

I don’t think we should underestimate the value to an AFL side going through a finals series to have your State League team playing in September as well.

The last three AFL premiers have had their VFL counterparts play off in Grand Finals:-

• 2015 Hawthorn  – Box Hill (runners up);

• 2016 Western Bulldogs   – Footscray (premiers); and

• 2017 Richmond – Richmond VFL (runners up).

The Casey Demons have had a superb season making it to a home qualifying final but they have been struggling with the loss of players to injury/retirement/holding players over. Last week against Williamstown they had 9 AFL listed players which left them badly exposed for lack of depth and this was reflected in the way their they lost their composure and were overrun by the Seagulls.

Casey are fortunate to have some very good VFL-listed players but the last three or four players selected for the team have been playing suburban or country football for most of the year and it’s tough for them to come up against a combination that’s been playing together all year.

This week they get Tom Bugg back plus Jayden Hunt and Joel Smith returning from injury. Mitch Hannan is an outside chance to play this week but the club has ruled out Jack Viney.

That would give them 12 MFC players which is the bare minimum. Players like the skipper Jack Hutchins, Jay Lockhart, Corey Wagner, Mitch Gent, Jimmy Munro, Angus Scott and some up and comers like Cory Machaya and Cory Stockdale should see them through this week.

If they can win this week, they go to a preliminary final and hopefully, by that time they might have a few more players back from injury.

Will be very interesting to see the selections for Saturday's match.

Top of 13 with winds to 25kph and a possible couple of showers

Tickets are $15 and can be bought online if you don't want to queue up. Never had a queue at a VFL game.

Will probably head on down after breaking my Casey duck last week. A few degrees warmer would have been nice. Probably sit at the newly named Berwick end !!

Go down there regularly. So your MFC membership won't get you in there for nothing coz its a final ? I usually stand near the southern side .

I may be jumping the gun, but I'm guessing the likes of Johnstone and McKenna are playing for their AFL career? Even Pedo now that Weid appears to be adequate as a back up ruck.

Good to see Hannan, Hunt and Joel Smith included. Gives us some options for the following week.

Mckenna - yes, playing for his career

Pedo - will be his last year, thanks for the good times

Johnstone - should get another contract

If Viney's toe is good to go next week then surely he should be playing for Casey this week I would have thought.

What if a bloke Gaffs him?

That’s about as good as we could have expected given the club’s injury list. Mitch King is the only MFC player out of the side but it’s not clear as to whether he’s been dropped or the mystery injury of the week.

His form has been patchy so having Cam Pedersen in the ruck is probably not going to be a major disadvantage.

It will be a good win if we get up. That geelong side isn't that bad. Their centre and half forward lines look pretty good. A win could be invaluable to us as we may get a couple of good players back for the prelim. I look forward to going.

Is he eligible to play? How does that work with finals?

Reading this page gave me a headache but I think Viney qualifies because he hasn't played after July 1 and the seniors are in the finals.

Basically the rules work that, as long as the AFL team is still in the Finals, there and no restrictions into who can and can't play in the VFL Finals.

Once the AFL team is out of the finals, then there is a complex set of rules about who can and can't play.

It will be a tough game, I thought Casey's defence has been great all year but with the lack of midfield AFL talent recently, the ball just started to come into the Back 50 too often for the defenders to deal with.

Hopefully now with the boys like Hannan, Joel and Hunty back this won't be as much an issue this game, although the Forward half is a bit lack luster. Hoping Pedo and Bull step up to have a big presence, and if the middle field can hold up I think we're a real chance at winning this weekend.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
