My favourite was when he sprayed the Gatorade over the Collingwood supporters at Victoria Park while going up the race at half time. He needed an escort to get back to his car!

He was dragged early on came back kicked 7 and we won a famous game (our last game at Vic Park) to knock the Pies off the top of the ladder - potentially costing them the flag. I was standing in the outer as a 10yo, great day at the footy.

You forgot how good a player he was and his kicking for goal was beautiful to watch. He really was a rare talent and that story he told of squirting the gatorade at the pies fans who were eating a pie at the time then saying how worried he was coming back out after 1/2 time and not sure what side to walk out on but said they are pies supporters so they wouldn't be smart enough to change sides was hilarious.

He was great tonight after just disappearing from society. Very funny man.

Glad to see he is still keeping an eye on the demons and still being interested in us. I wonder if Clayton Oliver is aware of him.

So you’d prefer that as “stooge” he talks over the top of a guy who’s barely been seen for 30 years?

Haha those clips were awesome thanks.

I saw most of Allen’s games. He was a total freak

very quick runner for the first 5-10 metres.

Pity he always had a bad back.

If Jako had played a full season in ‘94 we would have won that cup

i was shattered

Not bad was it? I was only young at the time, why did he leave Melbourne?

His back was stuffed.

Gee it would have been a handy forward line down the track if he was able to stay injury free for a few years. Jakovich, Lyon, Schwarz.

‘94 we had all 3. Allen played his last game for us mid season

Ha. Same here as a 10yo with my Filth supporting dad. He’d take me to Vic Park a lot, but to be fair he took me to Melbourne games too. I’d collect ‘cash-a-cans’ with random other kids whilst dodging the flying ciggie butts and bodily fluids. Climb the back of the scoreboard at half time while dad was at the bar.

The others kids that day were all Pies and were giving me heAps early in the game. Then Jacko came back on, went berserk and made for a great day! I wasn’t very tough as a kid, but Jacko made me feel invincible as I gave it back to those kids.

Unforgettable!

It was tough getting out of Vic Park that day. The Filth were angry!!!

Yep. Dad tried to make me do up my duffle coat over my Melbourne jumper. Probably more out of embarrassment or shame than anything!

& Neita...

That was so good. Although people need to learn to shut the [censored] up when they’re in the presence of greatness. Happens to me all the time...

Loved how they pointed out he never thought about cantering it, then he said Hogan needs to be more selfish lol, times certainly have changed.

His follow through on the run is a thing of beauty.

Jakovich was that one Melbourne player all the other kids at school would excitedly talk about and mimic during kick to kick, being the only Demon at my school it was the only time we got a mention, and I was chuffed. Great memories.

The entire segment is here.  What a legend.

While it was good to see the Demonland podcast was waaaaayyyyyh better. The length and depth of the interview and just letting him answer a question.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
