Max was unbelievable. Would have been carnage if not for him.

Fritsch was pretty good. Pass marks for a couple of others.

Hopefully the club issues "participation" awards to the coach and other players.

Sadly the way the day unfolded was the least surprisingly thing I've ever seen. I had money on Saints at the ridiculous odds of 6-1. I wish I had lost my money.

So, that's 0-3 for close games this year. The Johnny Northey sides had a great record in close games. 

Same old, same old. 

Max at it all day, big heart, great marks and getting to areas where he can influence the play. Loved Hibbs reading of the play and endeavour to get there. The mids when they had the ball played well in tight areas. Viney nearly got us over the line.

We switched off at times. We Lost our structure in the backline. Some players not enough involvement or non-competitive. Missed easy hit up targets. Oscar not ready to captain the backline, needs both Vince and Jordan. Jetts and Tom not looking 100%. Joel is a defensive wingman. No movement across the pack when marking or spoiling and are competing with each other. All attempts seemed straight down the line, nothing from the sides, need crumbers as well. We got sucked into reacting to niggles, losing focus on getting the ball and maintaining our structures. Three goals to start and then we stop. They zoned our forward line, we continued to enter inaccurately and we couldn’t lead. Where is our plan B C or D. We couldn’t create space and underperformed when pressured. If we got the win the saints would have felt robbed.

That felt like more salt.  2 points not a true reflection, Saints were a four goal better side than us today.

Our midfield mix was exceptionally poor today, work rate was tepid.  Had hoped the Collingwood game was the reality check the club needed, but seems like reality needs to slap us a few more times. 

Problem is, the season may be gone before the team wakes up.

UNFUGAZI and bring back some experience  . Petty 1 game and J Smith 6   both playing in the backline today  didn't have an understanding to switch play in defence which slowed us down going forward and certainly helped to cost us the game. I can elaborate but l am so gutted l have lost faith and l speak for myself only. Simon Goodwin and his merry men you are doing my head in..

Easiest side to score against, goals out the back all year long, why isn’t this addressed? Beats me...

Players that were in form 4 weeks ago have been out of form the last month and missing again today in ANB, Melksham and Hannan.

Jordan Lewis seems to have zero care factor. Every week he gives up two or three goals because of lack of discipline or turnovers from lazy decision making.

I do not care what leadership he brings,because he is part of the rot.

Tyson is still slow and will not change.

We have to give games to guys like Spargo, Baker and stretch because at least they have some zip.

i Can’t believe how much the backline has deteriorated since Levers demise so maybe Frost and Pederson instead of Smith and Petty with some run from Baker playing the old Hunt role.

Disgusting performance but typical Melbourne the most mentally weak side in the comp. I just hope 3 minutes of football where we almost snatched it doesn't cover up how woeful they really were.

I hope we swing the axe only Gawn, Fritsch and Viney deserve their pay packets the rest were a disgrace.

Agree with all except for Pederson down back. Was horrible in that position at Casey. I think Keilty has earned his stripes and deserves a go. He looked safer with his disposal than Frost.

What frustrates me and this happened so much last year and still happens to this day is when the opposition has the ball in our backline it’s like watching them have a training run all the way up to their goals, you can see what’s going to happen before it does, surely this is a coaching error if it’s been happening for a year and a half?

I can’t understand it either, Collingwood got us like that too, with the quick play on to the outside run on the boundary and swinging it in. They were doing it on the same wing all day with no melb players within cooee

Not if you take away the 4 gifted.

One thing from today is its pretty clear Hogan has to play deep forward and viney should never be used as a tagger

Viney has tagged Steven - whilst getting his own ball  - successfully and as part of a number of wins against the Saints the last few years. He's the right match up for a very dangerous player. Oliver, Brayshaw, Jones, Harmes and Petracca had to drive the midfield with Viney on slightly reduced attacking output. They failed to do so. A free wheeling Jack Steven has killed us multiple times in the past before Viney played.

Hogan in his first few years was a great CHF, lousy FF on the MCG. (seemed to play well at FF at Etihad). Unfortunately we love to try to possess the ball and outnumber and overlap down the field which takes away the use of a great CHF. We need to find a game plan that allows Hogan to lead up the ground and get one on one leads or contests. That's his best footy. We love the over the back kick and Hogan loves that too as a deep forward on the G. Often is caught flat footed and worked under the ball. He's part of a bigger forward problem but Fritsch showed what happens when you lead today. Whether it's his instructions or not Hogan has to lead up and demand the ball.

After having pizza with my daughter for dinner, followed by the movie Moana (her choice, but a surprisingly enjoyable flick nonetheless) it gave me plenty of perspective. There is far more to life, and better things for that matter, than exploding on the internet over a loss. 

It's a frustrating game, but we still have chance upon chance to make amends, finals still well and truly in our frame. I'll back the team to respond and stick with that. 

Be really interesting to see who the maggots give the B'low votes in this game, bet it isn't Max.

can't agree. Let them tag Viney. The saints are rubbish and we should of had this game won at half time. Viney showed his importance in the last quarter when he almost won us the game. They don't have anyone stronger than Hogan. Put it on his head and he'll mark it. Sure if he leads to space kick it there but at some point in his career he'll play a season as a FF and kick 80 plus goals. We're wasting him and much more astute footy brains are saying it as well

Maybe Viney would've, maybe Jack Steven would've. Jack Steven is a good player and for years the oppositions best mids have killed us. Viney on him has been a proven tactic that any coach would repeat. Should it have stayed for as long as it did, maybe not. That's a different question.

No doubt Hogan isn't playing well but the guy has always shown more natural ability as a running/roaming CHF. If by astute footy brains you mean the idiots in the footy media, well, no thanks, I'll trust what I see. Hogan has rarely shown any ability to do anything when the ball is sent to him high and long in a pack. Jake Carlisle is a mile stronger than Hogan under a big high bomb and if you didn't see that today then go get your eyes tested.
