FCS play Frost in the same position as Tim Smith. Taller, faster, stronger. He’d certainly provide a far better Ruck option.  I’ll bet my footy knowledge that Frost will play a lot more AFL games than Tim Smith. If it were me though, Frost comes in for either J Smith or Vince. 

The ‘frost is the answer’ crowd are back. He has not been playing well for casey before today. I’d like to see Him dominate at vfl level for a few weeks before him playing. He gets outsmarted easily at afl level so has some stuff to work on before players seniors imo

We need to stretch the opposition.

Bringing in Weed and Frost would give players like Hogan and Hibberd more freedom. We would score more.

If Stretch comes in, would stretch em even more, pardon the pun

Good on Weideman for playing well but I think people are missing the value that Tim Smith has given to the team with his forward pressure. He's our best tackling forward and I think he has to stay for that role.

Do we drop Hogan? That would be bold but I'd support it if the coaches wanted to fire him up.

Or do we drop Petracca and play the 4 tall guys and get Hogan out in space and Smith playing as the small pressuring?

Or is Tommy Mc injured.

Great to have Weideman back in form (against absolute battlers in Coburg) but I'm still yet to be convinced 3 talls works for us. Pedersen was in consistently great form but when he came in to the side the balance of the forward line was a mess. Weideman played against Ess, Saints and GC so it's not easy to work out how well the 3 worked with him but when Smith came in we destroyed Carl and Adelaide.

He's had a few good games for Casey. I recall the Port game where he played very well.

A backman's lot is not an easy one these days. They are expected to position themselves correctly, outmark or spoil the forward and then either kick/handball to advantage or run it out. A lot to ask of one player.

People might laugh at Zac Dawson but Lyon had it right in that Zac had all of the above except the disposal ability. Answer... surround him with those who have it.

I don't know if Frost will make it but key backmen don't grow on trees. My real worry is that no one seems to be pushing to replace Vince or Lewis.

Might depend a bit on whether the delusion of being in the premiership window still prevails.  If not maybe Petty will get exposure. 

On the VFL live stream they called Petty by Keilty's name all day. They really do look alike. 

Weideman had his breakout game. He has a 6 goal game last year against better opposition but for me this was better because the conditions were not key forward conditions, he took some unbelievable marks, he was not beaten in a contest, he was good around the ground, and played well in the ruck as well. 

Billy - Trac and ANB aren’t making way for him. He was fantastic around the contest and if Viney, Oliver, Jones were injured tomorrow he’d be first in. Maybe he might come in for someone like a Harmes but he is there ready to go when he is needed. The old cliche just be in good form when an opportunity is knocking and he was. Good he hit the score board, would have had a heap of metres gained as well. Both things that aren’t trademarks of his AFL career thus far. 

The backs - Frost was better this week because he played unaccountable football. And we know how good he is when he can run, kick and do what he wants. The issue is that this is not what we are asking of him at AFL level so it’s a bit hard to see him making it back in next week. Wouldn’t be surprised though. Pedo was good and locked down well. Petty played quite well but it wasn’t a day where the backman could star as it was an easy day at the office for them. 

Baker - sorry - not for mine just yet. Ran well, smart taps, good football sense. You can see he can make it, but not yet. 

JKH - really great inside outside game. Played some nice minutes as a high half forward. Will play great AFL football next year for a team that picks him up. 

Balic - time and space. Didn’t have a great game but you just can see AFL qualities and class in him. And a will to make it happen. This year is a Building year and looking forward to what he does JLT next year. 

Bugg is a tough one. Was not near it in the first half and then was great when he went into the centre. I’m interested to see what happens as the year progresses. Wouldn’t have had many metres gained, but was good in tight. 

Frost definitely must be in next week  

cannot believe he didn’t play v pies v cox and v power v Dixon

otherwise Goodwin does not see him as part of setup and would have to trade him

big strong defenders are sought after

Thought Pedo was poor today. Can't understand why he never played forward & Hutchins back. Hutchins is a shocking kick & it showed.

I thaught frost and stretch were our best players followed closely by the weed. I thaught Garlett was okay as well as jkh. Petty was fairly quiet as was Spargo. I would say that there were 3 players tossing it up for selection. Weed,Garlett and Stretch.

Frost wouldn't have done any better on Cox than Oscar did. Oscar had a bad one. His first shocker for a year. Responded well by beating Dixon in nearly every one on one. Port coaches were smart though and made him keep track of Westhoff late in quarters who ran him around and he made a few dumb errors. 

The issue is Frost doesn't have the fitness to play CHB. And Oscar at CHB isn't a great option either. So they are competing for 1 spot. 

Hibberd, Vince and Joel Smith are rotating through the 2nd/3rd tall spots and mostly that's working, or at least it hasn't been terrible. I'd play Petty at chuck him in at CHB and let the other guys work around him, but that's still different to throwing Frost in and hoping he or Oscar can play up the ground.

Zac was pretty good one on one, that's why Lyon kept playing him.

Frost isn't...he's not good in the air and looses position against good KPP's.

Then he doesn't read the play well enough to come off his man and effect the contest when required.

If we're looking for someone to replace Lever then Petty needs to be developed.

Frost isn't the answer.

Maybe Pedders was played down back to see if he can hold the position.

Clearly a choice from the coaches to give Pedda a chance at CHB knowing that as it stands Hogan, T Mc, T Smith and Weids should all play ahead of him for 3 forward spots, whilst down back we are short of options. Hutchins therefore playing a role up forward working around the positions they need to try AFL guys in.

Interesting discussion. Think back to the fact that we played Oscar underdeveloped because long term it was the right call. How long until we do the same with Petty? 

I think that the next 3 are perfect for Weid to see how his form is tracking. I think he just offers something different from our other talls. 

 

@DeeSpencer agree with Pedo. A see how this goes. He used to play back so it’s not new. @wizardinoz I don’t know if Pedo was near it enough to have a bad game =p

Just on Weid's ruck work. I went up to Brissy for the Suns' game and I thought Sam did his part - just little things off the ball like shepherding. He was up against Witts for the most part, who did have the better off him re taps.

When I watched the replay Sam's work in close was not evident, and, as such, criticism of his game here was justified. I think we agree that Pedo is finished. I'm not a rap for Bull, so for mine it's either Sam or Sam. I'll go the former!

He does great things off the ball. He did great work off the ball in the forward line and was responsible for some Hogan goals. If he can get a break out game at Afl level it will really worry backlines. 

As Derm says: Hogan and McDonald could be the 2 best forwards in the comp. we’ve also got a really good third as well.

Have you been to training and watched the repeat runs /time trials. Frost is a super powerful guy but he is towards the back of any kind of endurance work. Fast twitch athlete as they say. 

He played up the ground against Hawthorn and was repeatedly caught out of position and didn't have the speed to catch it up when he was run around.

Thaught Garlett was serviceable around the packs but not outstanding though. Can add pace around the forward line. Disposal was okay today as well.
