By my count we have:

Delisted 4 - Bugg, McKenna, King and  Pedo as well as 1 rookie - Filopovic

2 have retired - Vince and Balic

Kent has asked for a trade to StKilda.

Hogan may be requesting a trade to Freo

That amounts to up to 8 spots plus a rookie spot, 7 are a certainty. That seems like a lot of space being freed up for a club with no first round pick and probably only 3 selections worth anything at all.

I know from past form that Jason, Todd and the crew always have a plan, I wonder what it is. Any inside knowledge on Demonland?

Posted

It sounds like Preuss will be one addition, although for what I'm not sure.  If it's for a pick then it cancels itself out.

Could we have our eye on a few state league additions that we can nab with late picks?  I'd say we might be in the frame to upgrade Keilty, especially with Pedersen retiring, so that takes one spot so we can rookie another player.

Either way it does seem that we have a variety of options going into the off season which can only be a good thing.

I'd hope the club is looking to bring in a free agent or 2. The only one I am aware of that is any good is Gaff and the rumour is he may be off to North. I'm not sure if there are any others worth looking at, other d'landers may have more info?

If Hogan goes then the deal probably turns into 3 or 4 draft picks that we on trade for players we have already earmarked or we then use them in the draft(not desired).

We have been running the max 40 + 4. We could run the minimum 38 + 4 + 2 Cat B.  Then we've got 2 less spots to fill

Given we're really clearing out the cupboard, a number of players must be about to nominate us. Otherwise, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me given our lack of decent picks.

The list strategy is clearly to up the ante now that we are in our premiership window though. Exciting.

so so far the retirements, delistings, next gen academy selection, plus trade rumour mill has it as...

OUT: Balic, Vince, Bugg, McKenna, King. Pedersen, Filopovic (rookie), Kent (to St. Kilda), Hogan (to Fremantle)
IN: Preuss, May, Kade Kolodjashnij, Bedford (likely to cost our first current pick)

with four short on the list, i'd like to think we're getting two high end picks PLUS may for hogan, but sadly think it's less rather than more likely

plus there's the standard rumour that tyson is on the chopping block, avb and jkh are still yet to be signed as far as i am aware,

but presuming they stay and we don't add another experienced player to that list, here's a rough go at best squad for round 1 next year, up against the reigning premiers collingwood on a friday night at the g, with thankfully no fitness concerns...

B: Jetta - May - Lever
HB: Salem - O Mac - Hibberd
?: Viney - Brayshaw - KK
HF: Petracca - T Mac - ANB
F: Preuss - Weideman - Melksham
Foll: Gawn - Oliver - Harmes
I/c: Jones - Spargo - vandenBerg - Fritsch
Emerg: Lewis - Frost - Hannan - J Smith

Funny that Joel Smith is borderline to get an emergency spot (choice of him or Hunt), in my ideal world, when we most recently played an preliminary final - a change to the side that i completely understood from a match-up point at the time...even if Smith did end up playing forward at stages

A lot of discussion about perceived large list changes.  Here's the numbers from last year:

https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/www.triplem.com.au/sport/afl/news/2017-afl-retirements-and-delistings/amp

Adelaide 8. Brisbane 12. Carlton 13. Collingwood 8. Essendon 8. Fremantle 12. Geelong 7. Gold Coast 12. GWS 8. Hawthorn 8. Melbourne 8. North 8. Port 11. Richmond 7. Saints 8. Sydney 8. West Coast 12. Dogs 9.

8 is the magic number, minimum is two 7s.  Our projected number of around 10 is not an outlier.  WC 12 and in the GF

Great informative post, interesting. Brisbane big improvers with 12 and West Coast a premiership with 12 also, puts my mind at ease.

i wonder if we'd look at fasolo as a crumbling forward?.. i'd rather gamble on him than anyone from the saints.

can someone tell me why we aren't interested in chad wingard? for a team that torched so many shots at goal id love wingard up there. he also helps our leg speed when playing stints in the middle.

He is staying at Port.

He way over valued his worth and no one took a bite, so he's heading back with his tail between his legs.

So i know a few on here attended the Best and Fairest last night.

Surely there were whispers in the rooms in regards to Hogan or future trade targets this trade period??

Update.   7 off the list.

4 trades potentially out. Kent to Saints. Vandenburg to Swans. Hogan to Freo. Tyson to anywhere.

Trade Ins?  Preuss. May (if Hogan goes home to Freo). Kolodjashnij.

By my reckoning we'd still have a squad of 28 ready to play AFL players even with the 11 out and none in.

44-11=33. Only 5 not ready: Maynard, Baker, Petty, Johnstone and Keilty - even then all of these are close.  So I think the depth crisis that some are worried about is overblown.

Our depth is hiding in plain sight.

If the full 11 are off then there's 28/33 ready to go.

There's the 22 from the PF minus VDB and Tyson = 20

Plus 8 ready to go: Lever, Stretch, JKH, Hunt, Fritsch, Garlett, T.Smith, Wagner

Plus 5 development: Maynard, Baker, Petty, Johnstone, Keilty - some of them could play in 2019 too.

That's if everyone mentioned leaves and before we add any.

If VDB and Tyson are traded, the midfield before any additions looks like:

Core (5): Jones, Harmes, Viney, Brayshaw, Oliver

Mid/Fwds and Mid/Backs (4): Petracca, ANB, Fritsch, Salem

Fringe (2): Stretch, JKH

Development (2): Maynard, Baker

Yep, pretty clear we'll need to land a mid who is a big fish.

Jones played mid for much of the second half of the season (even without Viney).

We really need Petracca to take another step and have a break out game or two next season.

We can't afford to stand still or rest on our laurels. Our midfield is good, statistically great, but I reckon we're still 2 or 3 core and mid/fwd/mid/backs off premiership material. If KK can come in and provide something on a wing and off half back, Petracca lifts another peg, Harmes and Brayshaw continue their development and we land a big mid fish, we can win it in 2019.

If we don't land a big fish and lsoe VBD and Tyson, I reckon we're a bit thin in there. An injury or two and all of a sudden we haven't really improved our midfield.

Yes, there'll be natural improvement, but I hope we're still going hard for that fish.

Don't know...  can you tell me why he is on the outer with Port ?    seems sus to me.?

I agree, 'AF'.

IMO we were a bit thing before the Grand Final    Now with a couple going off, we are very thin.

We MUST bring in a topline inside mid this trade period...  one who can run with the ball.

And some wide types, who are un-afraid.

I have just finished Re-watching the Prelim, and the Cats game...

I am not convinced Re Purrtracca.  A boy in a mans body.
