    I was at that game last year, keen to have a look at Hibberd as didnt know him that well.. Came away from that game saying to my Dad that theres no way he'll every play a game for Casey again, he was so far above that standard. Little did we know he'd go on to be All Australian! Fritsch took one of the marks of the year that day and kicked a nice haul of goals, the start of something special..

    yep... remember that mark... I assumed it was Weideman but asked somebody in the crowd and they said it was a new guy called Fritsch.... a very special day

    if there was an injury to Hannan or Fritsch (not wishing for that to occur) his inclusion would not surprise ... particularly if we were talking round 18 and his VFL improvement remains on track.

    There's definitely something there... he may elect to go to another club next year if he can't break into the Dees.

    I think Jeffy is best 22 and will be bought in for Spargo at some stage.

    I agree with Nasher that he won't be a willing participant in that sabbatical but I think if we are to stick to our principles of player development, we rest him.

    We have usually given 18 year olds a taste initially then given them a rest. Even Clarry experienced this first year.

    Oh yeah there's absolutely something there DJ.

    I think it's more around this year being about getting on top of some off field matters as a priority and anything else is a bonus. 

    There'll likely come a point where his VFL form may dictate an call up

    While not in the side, I would try to let Jeff, Hunt and Tyson play at Casey as much as possible. All need to work on little things and find form.

    I agree on resting and on letting them go back to work on things but Spargo has been performing to an AFL standard, been adding pressure and skills. And we've been winning convincingly.

    No changes this week.

    The kid can play and he is bloody mature for his age. However, there usually is a tail off at some point.

    Oh yeah I can't see him playing the year out,  but right now I can't see any justification for it. 

    I misread your post thinking you were implying this week.

    Let's get to the Swans-style when Roos was coach of playing about 28 players for the year and letting a 22 settle.

    But if Goody wants to get clever, TMac's toe could use a rest. Dogs fans would be thrilled to see him out though, and given how we've gone with him back, it wont happen.

    Spargo had a brace on his knee I don't remember seeing in the past.

    Salem made a few blunders in an otherwise very good game.

    Vince was absolutely superb all day, but given advanced age could he take a break? Ditto Lewis?

     

    In other words... No changes. I mean... literally every other player had unbelievable games.

    The only reason I'll look with interest is the extra paces they put Pedo and Hunt through.

    Gotta reward form. Also a settled side is a good side. I think we are basically there with best 22, perhaps I would drop Hannan for Garlett if this was a final (with no chance of rain). But you need to reward players. 

     

    Edit- I’m sad about Hunt but he needs to find his mojo and his kicking skills.

    As the eternal pessimist I am worried about our 6 day break after the Alice, compared to the Dogs 8 days after a Melbourne game.

    Interesting to see if changes are made for this game to bring in fresh legs. On disclosed selections so far this year, maybe not.

    Nine days then to the Pies, which is good, with the bye to follow..

    It would be great on a side note, to win all 4 quarters against the Dogs and take the AFL record of 22 quarters in a row won.

    Wouldn't be surprised if there was a few changes this week to freshen up the legs, the guys looked stuffed in the last qtr on the weekend. I just get the feeling we will be flat this week as a result

    I agree, and it's in line with what Macca told Hunt 2 weeks back. Even the supposed intensive training run that Hunt and Pedo were put through during Sunday's game may have been an indicator.

    Having said that, any player rested would be fearful of getting back into the 22. BTW keep an eye on Lewis on Saturday. At Etihad he tends to direct traffic from the mid-field when playing, as well as coaching when on the bench ie more so than usual.

And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

      Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season.
