That's right DJ, and if we were Hawthorn, the players would take a small hit each, so they could bring a player into their list, to aid success on the field.

Perhaps not any more... Hawks killed that when they cleaned out the "older players" two years ago.

In their heyday the Hawks had a great internal ranking system that determined pay. It was simple ... no one got paid more than the best player in the club. Those days are well and truly gone. Now it's market forces.

And I'd reckon that could be Harmes.

Harmes, and imo, ANB.

ANB I think is following the development line Of Jones, who's kicking was iffy in his early years, but his decision making has improved and his kicking is sometimes excellent.   Jones is a far better player now, then his first 3 years.

ANB is improving quite a bit over the past 2 seasons.  And with TMac and Hogan also covering the mid zone, we are now much better served for run, through that area.

Gaff would be good to get, but not if he's too expensive, and upset our trajectory for the next 5 years.

There is no way he is worth a $1m

I reckon Tom would do $775,000.00 or so, over 5 years...  $3,875,000_00 over 5Yrs.

This would help him and the club, to build further, for all.

I'll spew if I see a facebook post with a bad photoshop job of TMac in a Collingwood or North jumper.

What makes you reckon that figure?

Ethan ... that is almost worth a lifetime ban !!!

Hope not. I honestly don’t know what I’d do with myself.

ALMOST...??!!!!!  A definite and immediate hang, drawn & quartering is called for.  Nothing less!

I'm just guessing Red, according to figures bandied about Re AFL players.  IMO some are paid far too highly. see danger.

Near $800,000.00 over 5years, is a lot of moola.

I am a leftist you know, so I don't believe in the few, taking the most.

We discussed this on the podcast last night. Hawthorn players took paycuts to keep an already winning premiership team together and to bolster it. We haven't had that success yet. Heck we haven't made a final since 2006. Until we have some success, and it doesn't even have to be premiership success, then the notion of sacrificing to keep the band together isn't there. If we can't make finals (not saying we won't) then what band are they trying to keep together. The lure to join a hit making band might be stronger.

Tasteless, submitted to draw disdain to others. Onto the 'banned' list immediately.

Yeah , but we at Melbourne have always paid players too highly, with thoughts we were closer than we really were.  > fools gold.

we are now ridgy-didge, and moving along. we should have played fianls last year , but for some wrong decisons, we shot ourselves in the Foot !...  literally.

The trouble is, IF we are still paying Some too highly, then we are up against it again before our players start to play real finals type football.

I suspect that Hogan? may have been getting O/payed ??? maybe some others who might need a haircut.

Because whilst we are getting really close, we are not there just yet, in our list.  And I do not want to go the way of Port last year, throwing all Eggs at their target. buying in skilled NQR's, to fill holes.

We need more speed, but in a package that has courage and some dare-to mojo. >  Sloane helps here

We need more class inside > Sloane.  Oli not enough... salem??? we don't have enough.

Lynch of the crow variety, would be handy to replace wattshisface. HF/Mid.  but De Goey would be better... with more agility and dash.

I think the players need to be team first right now before the club is forced to Over-Commit financially which could end up with us missing out on playing for the cup,,, yet again.

I would hope TMc sets the lead for us, buy not taking too much. He would look good with a Prem medal around that neck.

We should do whatever we can to retain this bloke and his brother too. Let's not go to crazy town but give him his fair share. The two guys have definitely helped their own cause and good on them because it's helping us win games and win them well.

Brown above Buddy and Kennedy?

For me yeah. North are a good team this year almost entirely because of him.

What do Stretch and Hunt need to fix to be this person?

Good question.

Stretch needs to play with more instinct and take the game on more. He hesitates at key moments circles and the opportunity is lost too often.

Hunt needs to forget that he’s fast and reconnect with the positioning, role and attitude that he needs to play. Seemed too often to be lining himself up for a streaky run that actually exposed us as much as benefited us...

would love to know what the FD have them working on.

Ethan you have turned an angel into a crim. How dare you! I am offended sir. Mind you he would be the best looking player to ever wear that filthy prison garb.?

The last big forward to sign was Joe Daniher in mid 2017. It was widely reported that the contract was $2M for three years. Equally it was acknowledged that Daniher had accepted significantly less than he could get on the open market.

Daniher at the time was flying so to speak ... much the same as Tom Mac.

On the flip side you have the ridiculous figure offered by the Dogs for the relatively untried forward in Tom Boyd of a reported $1M a year not to mention the figure of $1.4M that is being spoken of for Brisbane Tom Lynch..

Whatever we pay Tom Mac will also set an internal benchmark.

One hopes that like Essendon we get a loyalty bonus similar to what they got from Daniher but frankly Tom Mac owes us nothing. As others have pointed out this is his "payday" contract and it is not as though he is 21/22 and can expect a few more bites at the ever appetising cherry.

Sorry hi I feel the opposite. So many players have been paid over s for their performance  to fill our salary cap minimum. The same guys who let us down terribly last year when we looked assured of finals.

It’s Just an opinion but I feel we are owed. Tom deserves good money but geez we should not get screwed.

I'd play hard on this contract

Where else are you going to get to train at Gosch's paddock with a goffer on stand bye ?

                                                                                                            with your brother ?

with an occasional game at the G ?

with a regular game at Hollywood Boulevarde ?

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
