They replaced the Northern side stand JD but the old Southern side stand remains. It's a pity the oval/venue doesn't get the crowds it deserves...if that makes sense.

Interesting if he (Weed) was actually being ‘managed’ and not really injured.  I still think he adds a lot to the ‘structure’.

Oskar Baker made several poor decisions and this was a little disappointing. Needs to inject himself into the game a bit more. And get rid of that shite haircut. If you're playing badly don't bring attention to it. I made a point of watching his game and there's clearly potential but I left unconvinced about his footy smarts (this coming from someone who was a really dumb player)

Jayden Hunt played ok but chip kicks aren't his go. Good voice out on the field.

JKH is too smart a footballer for this level but is probably unlucky to be at Melbourne given our number of mids.

Pedo was outstanding.

Bugg has presence and, to his credit, he was very good today.

So does JKH have any trade value IYO?

Today it was Coburg V Collingwood, which started at 2.00PM.  Everytime I look for VFL footy on TV, its shown in bloody Black and White vertical stripes.

No amount of tuning seems to rid the Vertical Stripes from ruining the game.

I like to think and believe that as a club we are now past gifting potential 'next season' rookies a game 'just to give them a taste' at the end of a season......why because I hope......NO.....I know we will have players like Pedo, Garlett, Frost, Wagner, Stretch, Bugg etc. that are working extra hard, hungry and fighting for a spot in our 2018 finals side(s).

Don't get me wrong, I hope Balic is working his arse off too and I would like nothing more than to see his performances and work ethic push him ahead of those more senior players playing his role..........but whether you are an observer, supporter or member we should ALL expect and demand that the most 'in form' and 'balanced' team is selected each week regardless of a players name or their games played!

I suspect 'Goody' has the same opinion and that is why 'Jeffy' is playing for Casey.

I think JKH should start to 'bunk up' and train with Nev Jetta so he can learn to be 'hard and accountable' and hopefully develop into Nev's replacement.

I think you’ve misinterpreted my comments about Balic being a chance for a game towards the end of the year.

 

I definitely don’t think he’ll be gifted a game “just to give him a taste” and I definitely don’t think he is a “next season rookie” - whatever that actually means!

 

From what I saw today, I think that if he continues to develop and play the way goody likes his players to play, he will be a chance to force his way into the team based on form and talent. He is a strong bodied half forward/mid and if his form keeps trending in the right direction, he’ll challenge ANB/Harmes for a similar spot in the team.

 

He has missed a lot of footy over the last two years so we’ll keep an eye on him as I said after watching him today he has plenty of upside.

The honour of tossing the coin to start the much anticipated Round 7 match up at between VFL neighbours Frankston and Casey at SkyBus Stadium was given to former Melbourne star Brett Lovett who coached at both clubs and whose son Jake played with Casey before joining the Dolphins this year.

 

And for the game's opening 15 minutes, it seemed as if Lovett had put a magical spell on the home team which played as if inspired by the occasion. The Dolphins were back in the competition after a year’s recess, they were winning games having already taken scalps in North Melbourne and Coburg and they were running rings around the Demons. But for their inaccuracy – they led 1.6.12 to 0.1.1 with a slight  breeze at their backs – they were seemingly in control of the game and on course for one of the season’s biggest upsets to date. 

 

It was at this point however, that Casey’s strong marking forward, Cam Pedersen, stepped up to the plate and, with two goals in the space of a little over two minutes, the Demon train was back on the rails and the Dolphin resistance was over for the day.

 

Frankston fought manfully but it simply didn’t have the fire power. The stand alone team was virtually cobbled together in the off season and even contains a handful of former Casey listed players who moved across to Kars Street in search of a senior game after the abolishment of the Development League at the end of last year. They were always going to struggle against a Demons' team with 15 AFL listed players, and that’s exactly what happened with Casey kicking 19 goals to three after quarter time.

 

The win was set up by a seven goal unanswered second term in which Pedersen and Tom Bugg were dominant and the rampage continued into the second half, rounded off with an eight goal last quarter that ended with Pedersen (6), Bugg (5) and Angus Scott (3) as Casey’s multiple goal kickers. 

 

Frankston was held to its lowest score of the season and even that was helped by a late goal in junk time just seconds before the final siren. 

 

Pederson was simply unstoppable, booting 6.1, taking ten marks, effecting eight crunching tackles, picking up 21 disposals and labouring as a backup in a losing ruck. It was a dominant display, almost matched by partner in crime Bugg who had the same number of touches and booted five majors.

 

Despite the weak opposition on the day, Casey can point to a team performance in achieving its big win. When the team was under pressure early in the game, the defence stood firm and hustled the Dolphin forwards into error, contributing to their inaccuracy. 

 

There  were winners everywhere with Sam Frost, Jayden Hunt and Jeff Garlett shining and youngsters Oskar Baker and Harry Petty showing great promise for the future. Mitch White, Jay Lockhart and the ever-reliable Angus Scott were all major contributors on the day with the former relishing his role around the ground and finishing off the game with a goal.

 

After two wins in a row, Casey is back in the running for a top four placing and have a big game coming up against Port Melbourne at Fortburn Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Top 5 for tackles i50 only Rocky.   Ranked No.4 of 29 guys who have played 2 games or more so far this season (for averaging purposes). 

Spargo seems to be the guy being compared, ranked 18th here.

Obviously that's one pressure stat but there are others of course, such as 1%ers, Pressure Points (not publicly available accept via the Hun), Pressure Acts and no doubt others that the coaches get from Champion Data we don't have access to.

The only other easily accessible publicly available pressure indicators are....

• 1%ers where Jeffy is ranked 29th vs Spargo ranked 24th; and
• Defensive half pressure acts with Spargo just ahead here on 3.3 per match vs Jeffy's 2.4

So as you can see Jeffy is winning in one defensive stat but not so much (albeit still not far off) in the two others vs Spargo.

Offensively Jeffy wins out in goal kicking averages 1.8 v 1.3 per match but then Spargo is ahead in other areas such as effective disposals (averaging about 5 more per game).  Watching the two review videos from AFL StatsPro Spargo seems to get to a few more contests higher up the field vs Jeffy and working a little harder both ways.  Maybe a work rate issue with Jeffy or could just be what is being asked from Jeffy by the coaches (eg., to play more time closer to the goals).  Hard to compare the two reviews though given the level of intensity / pressure in the Tigers match (Jeffy) vs the Blues (Spargo) where it was obviously nothing near that level.

Obviously the Coaches are looking at a whole lot of factors other than stats, including offensive / defensive work rate, how effective they're playing the role that was asked etc.  They are also getting a whole stack of assistance from game/post game / opposition strategists who are putting together some interesting stuff behind the scenes to assist the Coach / line coaches.  In the end they are in the best position to determine who is on track.  We can only pontificate from the bleaches and try and take it in at the ground and on tv / replays etc where we are likely missing a fair whack of what's going on.  Not to mention how they are going on the track during the week.
