From a neutral point of view I say what you’re saying clearly.

From our point of view, come on man!! The guy has spent nearly his whole career in rebuilds. He deserves to be part of something different at this stage of his career than to up sticks and be part of another one.

I know footy clubs should be looking through the windshield rather than in the rear view mirror but I just don’t think we’re st that point yet with Jones. Not to mention I’m pretty selfish and want him to be a 1 club player.

I used to be the same as that with the 'one club thing', etc.

But I'm thinking of Jonesy and his tenure within the AFL, as well as this Club, and how it can cover off Lever.   And do all it can to realise its dream and to finally achieve it's aim.

Jones'y could help the club do just this.   By aiding May to come here.

And in the process, help the game itself in a big way.

Kid? He's 18. He's a man. If he's not maybe he shouldn't have entered the draft or should be playing WAFL.

It wasn't outside a night club though was it? It was on a footy field and context matters.

He was blocking Gaff's run on the field. Gaff was barely looking at him. Brayshaw wasn't either and you can see him dip down to move away from Gaff. Gaff took a swing for his chest to whack him away and smashed his chin.

Gaff has played 170 odd games and never hit someone in the head before. That, and the vision, counts for something with me. More so than a hypothetical.

Wow. Are you Gaff’s Lawyer?

It was bad, very bad, but he won't be put in a cell by police. Not should he.

Are you telling me that wasn’t assault.??

It was 100 m off the Ball, and Gaff looked him in the eye before he gave him a King Hit

Worst , most clueless poster ever to contribute to these boards. Would do more damage to our club than the forced retirement of Jnr McDonald.

There's a saying you should take to heart, "it's better to stay silent and appear a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt."

It cannot do any damage to this club, as it would be up to Jones'y himself and his family, to choose. he is contracted till next year so it would be his decision alone, other than the Suns, and the AFL.

'The fool', is you F'd...  ever since you were insisting the club should be recruiting Toumpas over Wines or Grundy, back in that draft year. The best skilled playing in the draft apparently, hey Furious.

Yeah well.  That one worked a treat.  Did you whisper into Toddy's ear that day.

Im going with 5 weeks. He isnt a pest like Bugg (6 weeks) but is not a celebration of multiculturism like Houli (4 weeks), however this is AFL and as a star player he may also conceivably recieve anywhere between a $1,500 fine and 3 weeks.

Surely hitting a pest might mitigate the penalty for hitting the pest compared to hitting someone who doesn't provoke, but a reputation for niggling isn't a reason for an extra penalty for an off-the-ball hit.

Look there is no doubt this isn’t a usual act for Gaff. I can’t even remember him being suspended recently. It was highly uncharacteristic. But that doesn’t make it right. He should get a nice long holiday.

Brayshaw is having surgery. On a broken jaw and 4 displaced teeth. That’s not a light love tap. That’s a serious assault.

Do I want Gaff hung for life? No. Should he come play for the Dees? Sure. Does he deserve 6 weeks? 100%!

Agreed.

I didn't say Brayshaw wasn't assaulted (ie. physically attacked), but it wasn't outside a night club and he wasn't held by the police. With that logic, if it happened in Saudi Arabia he'd face 100 lashes. Context is different.

Did Bugg snot one of the Brayshaws? I don't recall that. I was fine with Pickett, Vince and Lewis joining the Demons, more than happy to see Gaff join the side (if it happens) was just speaking as a brother, to use the cliche 'blood is thicker' and all of that.

I love my brothers dearly but I don’t think someone punching them is any worse a crime than if that same person had punched someone unknown to me. If I could move on from a mate punching a random, I could also move on from a random punching a mate. In my eyes the Bugg and Gaff punches are equal, even if I pretend it’s me and my brother in place of the Brayshaw boys.

I also reckon I’d be able to pretty easily push it aside enough to be professionally civil with the player. There’s no requirement for Gaff and Brayshaw to be best mates if they become teammates.

I accept my perspective isn’t universal though and that most people are a lot better at hanging on to grudges than me.

Anyway I hope I’m not seen as endorsing the punch. I’m definitely not. It was a reprehensible act.

I get your point, yes he would offer something to the Suns, but after dealing with 2007-2015 why on earth would you put yourself through that again? for sure he will go out on a high with us.

Reasons I've stated... and it would lengthen his playing career...  and he can contribute to an important AFL cause,  when he will have been payed out, by us.

Come this time next year,  Jones'y will be coming off contract.  He will be finished as captain, and the club has a one year policy after 30yrs of age I believe.

He will be 31Yrs +... end of 2019.  and will only get one more year.

We have other young leaders now, who are making strides, and Viney or TMc will take the sole mantle.

The end of 2019 will see the end of Vince, Lewis, And closely following will be Nathan.

The other side of the coin is; there is a Key position defender going into the market this end of season... and we might be looking down the barrel IF Lever fails in his recovery from the 2nd Knee reconstruction, on the same knee.

We don't have much to bid with for May this year.   But we need him desperately, IMO.

The gap between OMc,,,,  and Petty and Dec;  is much too big to wait on they're development,  and we should not rely on Frost and OMc.

If all we have is Frost and OMc next year...  TMc will have to play back often next year, and in finals.

Our whole club redevelopment could blow up in our face,  if we don't cover off Lever.

This is what I'm talking about.  It really is that big a deal.

I know all that. But Gaff should be held responsible in the same way, as if it was outside a nightclub. The football was miles away

It was totally his call. He did it

and now his opponent is having reconstructive surgery.

He won’t play for Meth Coke again, his bags will be packed very soon. Barry Hall style

Brayshaw was blocking Gaff from running. Under tribunal rules that's in play and it makes sense with how this occurred. If the ball was 1m away he wouldn't have been blocking and scrapping. Don't get fooled by Ross Lyon's emotions.

175 games for West Coast without incident and Adam Simpson clearly holds him in high regard. If he wants to stay there they won't change their offer to him one cent.

Joel Smith was dumped in a crude and possibly illegal tackle and is currently having reconstructive collar bone surgery. Should that be a case of assault as well?

You really don't get it, because you don't care for the AFL all that much.  your just Melbourne & that's all.

Not everyone is limited to just Melbourne SWYL.

Someone who cares about the AFL game, and its development..  Someone with a generous spirit and the skills to achieve the goals, to do the job right.

I think Jones'y is like this, as a person.

IMVHO this was a lot worse than Bugg

Bugg threw a reckless and overzealous arm blindly backwards at someone who was at him from behind: Gaff threw a very deliberate punch to a players face whilst face on, knowing full well what he was going to hit.

IF, IF there was any justice, integrity and impartiality in the match review process Gaff would get 6-8, however he will get 2-3 to enable him to participate in finals.

Prepare for weasel words and double back flip standards.

Way too sensible for here DS. Don't let reason and balance get in the way of hysteria and hyperbole!

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
