We canโ€™t play both Vince and Lewis anymore in the same game.ย

Losing the tackle count 113 - 74 has nothing to do with Goodwin.

Well actually it does when we play a game without wings or play with a loose behind the ball and have our forward half completelyย clogged up while they run into open space in theirย half.

Money as absolutely nothing to do with the fact swyl.ย  nothing to do with it.

Its a human condition. anxiety.

Now we can add our anxiety out aloud to our players, and they will double up with there own.

Or we can leave our negatives at the gate of the stadium, and make a promise to ourselves that we will not take our fears out on our boys,,, but transfer that fear, into anger against the opposition.

ย

Then we can add to the teams efforts instead of loading with our stuff.

ย

We need to be LOUD, but not AT our team;ย  rather be loud & With them in support.

this is not a Daylesford Yoga Class we are talking about, itโ€™s the oldest Football Club in the ? world, and itโ€™s time the players put some balls on the line for the club and the Members.ย

Supporters get [censored] off with insipid uselessย performances dished up by the Football Department on a semi reguliar basis, and why the hell not. That wasnโ€™t even VFL Standard today.ย

But you will tell me it is the fault of the Northern Stand no doubt.ย

Yes we 10, 20, 30 year members are all to blame, because the players feel the bad vibes coming at them.ย

Let me tell you something.ย

UNTIL WE GET THE BEST CAPTAIN IN THE GAME TO OUR CLUB, and i mean fierce competitor, this club will go nowhere, as it has for the last 54 years.ย

Did you clap the boys off today and cuddle them Deeluded??

It's one thing to put in a pitiful performance but to turn around at the end of the game and have a chit chat and carry on and a bum tap with players for the opposition who have just pulled your pants down....again....for the last 10yrs..is a disgrace. Get off the ground and sort out this [censored] with your teammates and coaches and fair dinkum don't hold back with your honesty and disgust with each other.ย  This is [censored]. Enough of these insipid games.

People can be disappointed about our performance today but we shouldn'tย beย surprised as it continues the within game inconsistency we have witnessed so far this season and the last season or two prior.

All teams have periods where things don't go perfectly but we go completely missing in parts of allย our games. Against half decent sides like Hawthorn and Geelong the game will be taken away from you. Against younger developing side like the Lions and the Kanga's we can still win games with the talented list we have, but it papersย over the cracks.

Imagine what the final resultย might have been had Rioli, Frawley and Puopolo not been injured and unwell.

All 3 are quality players but it also hampered the Hawks ability to rotate players in wet conditions.

It was just a bad day at the office, the hawks are still full of premiership players, the next 2 weeks will see where we are at, Jones was wasted today we lost his drive today, what tactic is I that wasting our best ball mover and letting slow brain fade Vince lose, Vince is only good to the team as a tagger he is too old and slow, he is getting a game because he his Goodwins mate.

Feel free to continue arguing against the unarguable.

A game ofย AFL goes a lot longer than 15 minutes buddy, or hadnโ€™t you noticed that?

I use yesterdayโ€™sย game as exhibit one.

tending to agree with you but out of interest who do you suggest from the VFL and what is that person's role.

I suspect the answer is Salem and that his midfield place is taken by Viney but in the meantime any other suggestions.

Posted elsewhere that we simply have to play a more defensive game against Richmond if we are to have any chance. Funnily enough I am resolved to a loss against the Tigers but we don't need another thrashing.

67 odd points on a wet day... boy that was bad.

Just want to acknowledge the performance and the improvement of Oscar McDonald.

He has real been a bright spot so far in 2018, seems like a completely new player.

I somewhat concur. There was a point yesterday I thought to self well thankgod for Oscar...and then thought. ...my god...has it come to that !! lol

But truthfully...he played ok in the main and seemed among the most composed. He didn't have a lot of mates down there did he.

And we were all pitying the Lions for not kicking a goal for almost three quarters and getting flogged in the wet against the reigning premier interstate.

Our performance was way, way worse.

Putting the cue in the rack turned a 4 point loss to a metaphorical 8 points lossย ย That lost percentageย sees 4 teams leapfrog us. This result was a disaster.ย

The back line at the moment is a shambles, I think we can all agree on that.

But I also think the back line is being left exposed too often by the game plan.ย  By pushing most of our players up the ground in the hope that we can lock it in our forward line and score goals, we then leave our back line open to the counter attack and we look ridiculous when it happens.ย  Lever was supposed to be the sort of player who would help in this regard, but teams are manning him up and making him more accountable which limits his ability to be the player we want him to be.

Not only that, but our midfield takes some of the blame with this also.ย  When we aren't pressuring and we aren't harrassing the ball carrier we allow the opposition very easy entries into our defensive 50.ย  We don't have enough time to push back and support, and thus we allow them to kick goals with ease while we struggle to get one for 10 minutes.

Goodwin has at least tried to develop his own game style, rather than copy someone else's, which is commendable, but he also needs to sit down this morning and realise that their are severe deficiencies within this style that need to be fixed as soon as possible.ย  To me, this will be either the making of him as a coach, or will see his tenure at the club end sooner than we all want it too.ย  If he can suck it up and make the changes he needs to, rather than being stubborn and just sticking with things the way they are, then I can see us moving forward positively as a club.ย  If not, then we'll see us win a few, lose a few and probably miss finals again.ย  That will be an unacceptable outcome for all involved.

And as others have mentioned, we need to get a proper second ruckman into the side.ย  I don't care if it's Pedersen, Weideman or even Mitch King for that matter.ย  We need someone who can be a positive part of the contest for us rather than a bloke who isn't even 190cms tall.

Rawlings in ...Simon outย ;)

I think WB touches upon the nub. There are essentially two elements..or two sides of this coin.

Game plan, implementation.

Under these id also put appropriateness, flexibility, response , innovation and REALITY.

A tale of two Coaches yesterday.

Possible to say at games start there was not a lot between us. As it unfolded and Clarko could see his problems he thought, recast and adjusted. Compare to our mob who effectively kept to the same menu. Even after half time , when anyone with a modicum of wherewithal would realise what started well was failing miserably, that a rejig was not only desirable but necessary; what did we do ? Nada.

Simon left his lambs to be slaughtered.

Thats negligence. If a captain did that letting his ship founder on rocks he'd be up on charges.

Goodwin seems incapable or unwilling to adapt to need.ย

God help us.

Vince should have gone to Mitchell.

I do understand Jones doing it, however with Viney out we really needed Jones in the guts winning his own ball.

This would have allowed Petracca to spend more time forward which we needed.

It was a shocking, shocking oversight.ย

Imagine sending your Captain to do a grunt's job.ย

IMO we lost it the moment Jones went to Mitchell.

With both Viney and Tyson out, we really missed Jonesys ball getting ability in the Middle by using him as a tagger.

Jones tagging did not lose us the game. His ability to shut down Mitchell early and our better efficiency of ball movement and conversion had us well on top at quarter time. We didn't take all our chances there, but the plan was clearly working at quarter time.

Agree 100%.

It is that attitude that typifies this football club. That is why have have the longest premiership drought out of the traditional clubs. Culture is our biggest problem and it doesn't just sit with the players. Acceptance of mediocrity has gone onย for far too long.

Due to a wedding I was only able to watch the game from quarter time. We looked way off the pace right from the start of the quarter. I was thinking how did we win that first quarterย the way we were playing. Second to the ball, out tackled and terrible skills.ย Whatever happened at the break turned the game.

ย

My internet cut out at half time so I didn't get to enjoy the second half. Which is merciful not just because of the pounding we copped. But that game was modern footy at its absolute worst. Australian Rules Rugby. Packs of seagulls squabbling over a chip. If it wasn't the MFC playing I would have turned off anyway.

What I did see in the last 10 mins of the first quarter, and all of the second quarter, was this ...

Hawks were first to the ball

Hawks played in front

On a day when the ball is sliding around and skewing off boots, of course kicks aren't going to go where they're meant to.

So .... GET IN FRONT!!!

We're in a era of hyper-sexualised ... (sorry, my traumatised mind was wandering to a better place) hyper-analysed and sports medicine driven training and game plans.

But some things remain the same as in "the good old days".

Be first to the ball

Play in front

You can be Sheedy, Clarkson, and Albert Einstein rolled into one package, but if your players don't do those things, you're screwed.

Unbelievable that for all the talent we've got, we played like Neeld was coaching. I'm tempted to believe that his hard-man act would have got a better result yesterday.

If weโ€™re going to bomb it into the 50 why donโ€™t we bomb it long? We continually bomb it to around the 40m mark where we play behind our man. The opposition rebound and kick a goal.ย

The i50 stat means nothing when our entries and the result are like this.ย

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. Itโ€™s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this yearโ€™s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.ย  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.ย

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old sideโ€”the Tigersโ€”coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking?ย I mean by โ€œtheyโ€ the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around.Itโ€™s no secret that the Demonsโ€™ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack.ย Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryanโ€™s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winningย 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
