Ok, I get my topic was merged with this one, but where’s my poll? It was the sole reason of creating the topic

I know that in the grand scheme of things this is a pretty small matter, however it's one that, strangely, I feel pretty passionately about. I just sent the following to the Club.

To whom it may concern

I've seen on Social Media this evening, that the Club Executive is yet to make a decision on whether to use the re-recorded version of 'It's a Grand Old Flag' or the Fable Singers version in use since 1972.

For what it's worth, as a fairly young, but long-term member of the Club, I'm all for positive change. That is, change that improves on the status quo. Unfortunately, this smacks of change for change's sake.

I understand that the re-records were at the behest of the AFL, which comes as no surprise, given that they seem to continually come up with solutions to problems that don't exist! With this in mind, I would implore the club to think carefully about replacing this important part of the match day experience.

Personally, I find the new version sterile, lacking tone quality and depth of sound, and generally uninspiring as a 'call to arms/battle song'.

I've been very pleased to see that a number of the bigger Melbourne clubs have chosen to stick with the versions we all know and love. I hope that we can count the Red and Blue in that number also.

Yours sincerely

You don’t retain the honor of being the oldest continuously fielded football club in the world by not retaining your heritage - get [farked] Gil!

If the option is a simple ‘tune up’ then that’s ok, but if it’s some sort of modernised interpretation of the red and the blue, then [fark] me, what are we here for???

That would be devastating, it’s all about the heritage, we even changed our logo recently to capture it (which I love BTW).

Sorry Gil, but the needs of one never out-do the needs of many...

For what it is worth there was two new uploads to the club's YouTube channel today with what appear to be very carefully worded titles "Official theme" and a separate "rerecorded theme"

Thanks for that

The new version lacks punch and passion in the instrumentation

Well said - not to say I agree or disagree.

But, we play games in Canberra, Darwin, Alice Spring etc the PA systems / acoustics at those grounds are not the best. If all MCC and Victorians vote the same way its a no brainer.

But sometimes,  do we have to give a touch - just so the Demon supporters in every state in Australia get to enjoy the song after the game - because this year I hope it gets played after the game many more times than last year.

Huh?

Received a bog-standard Copy & Paste response from the Club this morning:

Thanks for contacting the Melbourne Football Club.

Every clubs theme song has been re-recorded for the 2018 season.

We are currently reviewing both versions (new and old) and will make a decision in the coming days as to what version we will use throughout 2018.

Thanks for your support and feedback!

The club has decided to retain the original version of the song for the 2018 season.  Good, sensible move by the club!

Beat me to it.

Seems like all the traditional clubs are making a statement to the AFL to stop [censored] with the game.

I agree.  The update was totally unnecessary.  At no point have I heard it live and gone 'gee, that could use an update!'

But I thought we were going to bend over and play the new one?

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
