Who do you think our most marketable player is? Max Gawn? Christian Petracca? Someone else?

They were talking about it on SEN this morning. Garry and Tim had Max on their lists. Sam Edmund listed Petracca among five most marketable players in the future.

Is Sam Edmund a Collingwood supporter?

Who the hell is Jaydn Stephenson.  And how can a drink driver be marketable?

As a spokesperson for Drink, Drive, Bloody Idiot acting as the Bloody Idiot. Bizarre choice given he is on his "third strike".

It's gotta be Petracca.

He's like an NBA player, albeit playing AFL.

For the Demons.

More marketable than Max at the moment?

I think Max is instantly recognisable in addition to having an affable/lovable personality. Being one of the best ruckman in the league adds to his marketability.

I think Petracca has future potential to overtake Max but has to put those runs on the board.

it's gawn

he's brilliant in the media and every broadcast wants a piece of him

"My favourite ruckman tackling my least favourite team mate" was gold

Would love him commentating if he wasn't playing for us. A lot more genuine flavour and humour than the forced, boisterous, ego-inflated, obnoxious faux banter that's forced down our throats on a regular basis. *Cough* BT *cough*

Definitely Gawn but I think he/the club need to find a balance with his media appearances so that it's not overdone to the point that it affects his game.

Gawn is the best marketable personality currently we have at the club,  (Vince close behind IMO) I think Gawn is a super ruckman, but in terms of pure player skills he's not at Petracca's level.

Petracca is the best all round player package i.e skills, personality, confidence, being mates with with Ben Simmons :)  that we have from a marketing perspective at the club, plus it's still early days.

I’m not sure how “marketable” some on these lists are. Dustin Martin for instance may appeal to a few but from a marketing point of view he represents too much of a risk (heavily tattooed and somewhat inarticulate) to be a family friendly face of product X.

Dangerfield IMHO is very marketable as is Gawn: they both represent the acceptable family friendly face of the game. And family friendly generally means Mum. I could imagine Max being the face of (for instance) the XYZ coffee bean company, and Dangerfield doing farm machinery ads for all the western district farmers.

Not too many football players are articulate and have good looks and have a profile that reaches beyond the footballl community.

Has to be Gawn. Loved by not only all of us, but most of the fans from all teams.

I took my Geelong supporting nephews to the AFLX tournament and they were the most excited to see Gawny amongst the crowd.

I can't remember a Melbourne player in recent times that has had that affect on opposition fans.

Maybe not quite as 'marketable' as Max and Trac, but  I'd like to throw Jayden Hunt's name into the ring.  He's widely recognised for his headband and dash on the field, but his 'Shirley Temple' good looks,  impish smile and a 'way out' sense of humour also attract  plenty of attention. And to top it all off, we Demonlanders sponsor him!

I think Dangerfield’s brand suffers from the underlying current of smugness that oozes out of him. I think fans respect his ability, but I’m less convinced they like him all that much.

I agree on De Goey though bizarre choice.

Yep.

Gawn's a good bloke - super funny, loyal Demon, AA ruck etc.

That said, I reckon any advertising agency would look at our list and point to Petracca every day of the week - freakish talent, explosive player, reasonably good looking, 'X factor' in spades. This is what equates to marketability IMO - it's not a question of who's the better bloke to have a beer with at the pub.

If it was this, the question should perhaps be rephrased to be 'who's the player you'd most want to have a beer with at the pub?'.

A long time ago, before the Dark Times, the only Melb names "others" (non supporters) knew were Bruce and Green.

Then for years, the only name known to the outside world was Nathan Jones.

Now, when they talk about Melbourne at all, they talk about "Gawn" and "Petracca". That says everything.

Yes, they know "Hogan" too, but they way they talk about Gawn and Petracca is the way they talk about elite players.

Gawn has put it all together, on and off the field, everyone has seen it with their own eyes. But Tracc doesn't have the runs on the board yet. Glimpses. Teases. We're all waiting, Demons and non-Demons, for the explosion. When it comes ...

From the Dees. the most marketable are Gawn (obviously) and Hunt (who surprisingly, has only been mentioned by DeeOldFart) with, depending on what he does with his hair, Oskar Baker as a future possibility; even the nickname "Ginga Ninja" reeks of marketability.

Why is it that hair seems to correlate with marketability anyhow?

It's like if you have different hair you're a 'cult figure' all of a sudden.

Kids just seem to glom onto players with long hair don’t they. Over here kids wear ‘Nic Nat’ wigs, I don’t think he’d be anywhere near as popular without the dreads. A short back and sides wig just doesn’t have the same impact.

Howe was incredibly marketable for us before crossing to the pies. Kids all over the AFL loved him.

Right now it has to be Gawn. Opposition fans love him, and his game backs up his media work.

I think Trac is being elevated as the hood ornament for the club. His game needs to go up a notch or two before he overtakes Gawn as the face off the MFC.

No idea Choke... perhaps it's an indicator of someone a little different... it's always the physical traits that seem to be associated with marketability... Gawn only really got noticed once the beard appeared, Hunt with the locks and headband, Jones, Dustin Martin and Dane Swan with the tatts.  Of course the talent needs to be there as well, but marketing, whether we like it or not, is about superficiality.
