Probably not the moment, but can anyone list the Melbourne players eligible for Casey/VFL Finals?

Subject to Rule 20(c) below, a Player who has played in an AFL Home and Away Match after 1 July in the relevant season will be ineligible to play in VFL Senior Grade or Development League Finals Series Matches unless that Player has played in a combined total of at least six (6) Senior Grade or Development League Home and Away Matches in the same season.

Hard to think of many who played v Collingwood meeting this criteria... it was our best 22 (he sobs).

No love for Kennedy KC? You mentioned that he had 23 possessions by three quarter time. Did he fade in last quarter? Thanks for your great commentaries throughout the season. Go Casey in finals.

WIN ON PENALTIES by Ice Station

The Casey Demons will take on minor premiers Williamstown in a qualifying final after beating off a strong Werribee challenge at Casey Fields yesterday.

The 15 point victory was unconvincing but it gave the Demons their sixth straight victory and maintained their unbeaten run at home for the season. The Tigers were desperate as a win would most likely have given them a place in the finals and they put in a plucky performance which saw them within three points at the final change. But it was not enough in the end.

The game was close early with both teams locked together for most of the first half until a lapse in discipline saw the visitors give away free kicks and a couple of fifty metre penalties that led to three late second-quarter goals for the Demons that sent them into the sheds at half time with a 21 lead.

Werribee worked hard after the break to atone for their indiscretions but the Demons closed off the game with the only two goals of the last term to secure the double chance.

The Demons were without skipper Jack Hutchins, rested with general soreness, but were well served by the goalkicking prowess of their smaller men in Bayley Fritsch and Angus Scott who managed five between them. Fritsch, who is the club's leading goalkicker, is on his way to the State Draft Combine where he is likely to further establish his credentials as a potential draftee. His mark and goal in the final term when the game was on the line was all class.

Of the Melbourne listed players Jack Trengove and Ben Kennedy played their roles and Corey Maynard continued his good progression through the season but, on the whole, they were disappointing when one considers that potentially, at least, an AFL finals place was on the line.

In the end, it was those penalties given away before half time that cost Werribee the game and a finals appearance.

The Casey Demons qualifying final game against Williamstown will be played this Saturday at 2:00pm at the scene of their opening game of the season, Burbank Oval.

So going off of these rules http://websites.sportstg.com/assoc_page.cgi?c=1-118-0-0-0&sID=277333

I have gone through all the VFL games of the season to see how many games each player has played, and as far as I can tell, these AFL listed players are eligible for VFL Finals (excluding injured players):

  • Trengrove
  • Brayshaw*
  • Stretch
  • JKH
  • Weideman
  • Hulett
  • Bugg**
  • Spencer
  • King
  • Kennedy
  • Johnstone
  • Wagner
  • Keilty
  • Maynard

*Brayshaw has played 6 VFL games this season, making him eligible to play. However, he was concussed in the opening few minutes of one of the Northern Blues game, so if they don't count that game, he will have only played 5, making him ineligible.

**Even though Bugg has only played 4 VFL games, his suspension game against Sydney was on June 30th, 1 day before the July 1st cut off, and he hasn't played a senior game since, so I think this makes him eligible.

Also a couple of interesting things, Wagner only just scrapes in with 7 games, Pederson is ineligible having only played 4 VFL games, and out of every single AFL listed player, only Keilty has played all 18 games for Casey this season.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
