We have some many more options with a designated ruck pedo and watts can play forward with 1 pinch hitting in ruck gives us the option to play petracca in the midfield as well

In -     Spencer,   Salem

Out -   O McDonald,   Bugg

Pedders forward/backup ruck.  Watts freed up to play permanent forward.

i'll go with:

IN - spencer, salem
OUT - o mac, wagner

bugg needs to kick the goals when they're there, otherwise hes been good.

spencer for omac is a no brainer and salem gives us more than Wags

I know the devil is in the detail but if you are to look at the high level stats - gee both teams are close. Other than the obvious - our better percentage and maringally more contested possessions and more materially their better than avg hit outs (45 filth, 29 d's) and marks (106 filth, 94 d's) - we look very closely matched up. Both of a win too.

Having in spencer would help fix up those two key differences (marks / hit outs) and allow watts / Peddo to take more contested / uncontested in the forward 50. I'm pretty excited about seeing watts especially released up forward after a weeks needed rest and the difference that makes to our forward structure.

I think it's going to be a cracker of a game Monday.

we'd only play Spencer if we are absolutely desperate.

lucky for him we are!  so he is in even if not match fit.  Just run into that fat head Grundy all day Speno.  Oli and Jack will do the rest

Im excited to see how our young guys look after a week's rest.  I'm expecting big things from Oliver, Petracca and Hunt.  I know Oliver was still getting heaps of it but he looked tired in the last few weeks, imagine him after a rest!

Have seen the AFL.com.au article quoting Josh Mahoney but just get the sense there's possibly some mind games being played here and Hogan might play.  I assume team selection won't be until Saturday so there's some scope to draw things out for a few days yet.  Appreciate an update on training this morning if anyone braved the cold and wet and got along!

I hope we're up for mind games. Don't even mind the club anteing up for a fine for a 'late change'

Let's not give the filth an even break.

Really hoping we could get Jesse and Maxy back for next week against the Dogs (assuming Hoges isn't playing this week). Would be such a lift for the boys

It's a fine line, because we can't really afford to carry a player who isn't fit enough. We've showed we can still beat the best without a ruckman so I don't think they'd bring him in if there was much doubt. If fit though, he'd be a handy addition.

Huge game this week with a lot of external pressures. It's a real statement game though, because if we win we're in the 8. Need to get the 4 points this week.

If Spencil is 'mainly' fit...good to go ..play him.

If not. Don't. Pretty straight forward.

Given it was a shoulder injury he should have been able to do the majority of the 'leg' work so fitness shouldn't be an issue, it'll be if the shoulder is strong enough and I'm sure he won't be picked without a massive fitness test (where's Bryon Pickett when you need him). If they don't bring him in, I don't think it'll be a big problem and we might wait until Gawn is ready before playing a ruck again.

Bernie returns Adams' serve: "It might be (used as a motivating factor). What is he (Dunn) at a successful club now, is he? That's the first I've heard of it but we might be able to use that one as a bit of motivation. Not sure what he's done at Collingwood yet though." http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-06-06/is-he-at-a-successful-club-now-bernies-swipe

Straight to the point!

Adams has dropped Dunne right it in.  The flack is directed at Dunne and he hasn't said a word.

Ah well, glad Bernie fired it up a bit.

Would have been better if Bernie had said "not sure what'Collingwood's done since he's been there" !!   Never mind, added spice all around.  Bring it on

I'd like to see someone flatten Howe.

In the first quarter, perhaps even before the opening bounce.

Elliott a chance to play according to Geoff Walsh on SEN this morning.

No chance he plays. They might name him in some lame attempt at mind games though.

Too bad for them Goodwin is not a dodo like Buckley.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
