    How smart was he to get to the right spot so Nibbler could pass it to him.

     I think he was better than most think, he isn't meant to be a star for us, but he did a few nice things whilst getting 20+ possessions.

    Workrate was up, and he was clever in close when he kept his feet. Don't remember him going to ground so often in the past...

    Anyway, he stepped up in the first game of a month that we need him to.

    Had a few other passengers today, good to get a win when you are just going.

    Very happy that he offered ANB that option at the death knell today though.  And kicked the goal - you never know it could even make a difference re percentage.

    I thought he was pretty good today. And clearly he's a better on field leader than anyone we could replace him with.

    You can see at the very end after ANB took the mark that Lewis started talking to him almost straight away, telling him what to do. ANB then went from watching the clock to looking out the corner of his eye to make sure Lewis was still in space. 

    The percentage move for Demons of old would be to go for the goal. Obvious risk is that if they missed, they then give the opposition 30 seconds to get up the other end for a goal.

    Percentage move now is what Lewis orchestrated last night. Remove all doubt, and guarantee victory.

    Thats experience, and you can't teach that.

    It took the heat off ANB as well. If he'd had the shot and missed it could well have cost us the game. I was crapping myself watching ANB line up. Everyone I was watching with just started laughing when he passed off to Lewis. The relief of the pressure dissipating was palpable.

    Where were the Carlton defenders? In their shoes I'd be filthy that they didn't force ANB to take the shot.

    I reckon many comments are a bit harsh.

    Lewis has added an on field presence that distracts opposition teams from their own game. This gives us an edge.

    His on field positioning and direction are always valuable and never better evidenced than the last few minutes this week.

    No one else in the squad brings what he does to the game. I'm happy that the coach recognises contribution value over the statistical count.

    He contributed plenty last night - 24 touches, 10 contested and 7 marks.

    Stop thinking he needs to be one of our elites - that's not what he was brought to the club for. Of all those players you mentioned - none of them had the presence of mind to instruct ANB to chip and effectively seal the win beyond all doubt.

    Watch Lewis hold the ball when he kicks at goal he tilts it to get the curve he wants with a drop punt. Then he kicks on the the right plane for it to work. I've never seen any player do that before.

    It would be handy if he could actually execute this skill in games and under pressure for Melbourne.

    I didn't say it wasn't a good game, I just said it wasn't an influential one.  And I'm a long way from expecting him to be one of our elites, believe me.

    You won't see anywhere that I've said he's not worth his spot in the team.  I've said that many here overrate his influence and that he has a short shelf life.  Interestingly now that I, along with a very few others, have questioned his football output there is a growing awareness of his footballing weaknesses.

    I'm projecting that he is closer to the end than many think.  I don't rate his on field leadership as much as others but I fully accept that yesterday in the last minute he was very smart.  I was one of the first to call out Lumumba and was roundly criticised for it.  I might be right or I might be wrong with Lewis but his situation is similar to Trengove - he is slow by AFL standards and despite all the other attributes he has that is a deal breaker when it reaches a certain point.

    Good post, I hear what you're saying and won't try to argue with any of that. 

     

    Time will tell - lets hope you're wrong! (If we play September this year I think we'll see why we need him more than ever)

    Yeah, I don't remember him being that way in the past.

    Of course, being juxtaposed against Viney, Oliver, and Petracca doesn't help because they rarely go to ground when picking up the footy.

    My main issue is the glaring wasting of the footy from time to time - looks needless. I would like to put it down to a new system and getting used to the kicks that were 'there' are not 'there' anymore in a new system with a different set of players.

    But, again, he was better and he will need to maintain it for the next month.

    He goes to ground a lot trying to lay a tackle or compete for the ball.  It's more a lung trying to make up for a lack of pace.

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
