How are GWS going to pay all these players with contracts ballooning to that size?

They are not and that is why Taylor and Co will be having a good look at who they might release.

I think when making comparisons purely from an on-paper perspective, Jake Lever has a far more imposing name than Oscar MacDonald.

Jake's a bloody good player, but he's an upgrade rather than filling a hole in our side.  I'd prefer to see us chasing someone with a few more inches to them who can go with the 2m forwards that seem to have sprouted all over the league.

Apart from Rory Thompson, Jordan Roughead and Jake Carlisle, there are no 200cm defenders. Talia is 197cm, Hurley is 193cm, Hooker is 197cm, Taylor is 195cm, Henderson is 196cm, Day is 197cm, May is 193cm, Davis is 197cm, Rance is 194cm, McGovern is 195cm. Of those i'd say that Talia, Hurley, May and McGovern play the more traditional role of FB (average height = 194.5cm)

Carlisle isn't setting the world on fire, Roughead is perpetually injured and Thompson has also struggled to get on the park recently. It seems that anywhere between 193-197cm is a good height for a fullback and Lever is right in the middle at 195cm.

have you ever stood next to someone 2-3cm taller than you? it counts for jack... look at it on a ruler...

so long as you arent short in the arms and can jump as a kpd it is totally irrelevant.... even 5cm

Purely hypothetical, but let's say you could convince Jake Lever and Josh Kelly to come to you, but you only had room in the cap for one of them, who do you choose?

Kelly. Put Kelly in our midfield and you wouldn't need any defenders, the ball would never be down there.

I must admit a midfield of Oliver, Kelly, Salem, Petracca, Viney, Tyson, Jones, Lewis, Vince and hopefully even Brayshaw makes me salivate. That'd be five left footers and five right footers.

Unfortunately though, it'll never happen. :(

Nah, not with the stupid money being thrown at Kelly. I doubt we'd enter that race. If we did could we trade Tyson and pick 9? Just for laughs.

Upgrade is an understatement.

Adelaide supporters talk Lever up as their next captain.  He will be a perennial All australian.  He is 195cm, and he will out body and outsmart any forward he pays on, whether they are 200cm or 190.

If the MFC land him it will be party time.

Crows board on BF seem to think it's a done deal Lever has re-signed with them for 5 years

As much as I would like him, I'm always slightly happy to see young players re-sign with their club long term.  I know we have loved seeing the commitment from our younger players over the past couple of years, so to see others do it in the face of growing free agency is good to see.  Even if it means we potentially miss out on a fantastic player.

Our interest in Level may also be the reason why we have shown little interest in May to this point.

I'd take Lever.  Gawn in the ruck, bookends in Hogan and Lever, plus Oliver in the guts and you've got a brilliant nucleus.

You'll save coin and turn your attention to a lesser version of Kelly.  Maybe a Whitfield type.

Get Lever and our spine is absolutely elite. And it will be for a very long time.

Roos loved this guy - despite being a great head coach, I've always thought he would've been a great recruiter. Getting this bloke is a no brainer - it's a pity we couldn't get the pick from Richmond that would've landed Lever at the club in his draft year.

That the Crows apparently want to sign him for another 5 years says it all really.

They apparently see him as a future captain and perennial AA.

And Richmond chose Corey Ellis with that pick...

Sigh...

They should have just handed it to us.

And hes still available. Manager said:

  • Currently way off signing.
  • Issues surrounding total player payments (as in incremental rises in salary commensurate with those stated in the CBA)
  • Adelaide is not willing to offer that up
  • Contract talks haven't even started as a result.

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2017/06/01/in-demand-crows-contract-talks-have-stalled/

So how much do we think Adelaide would offer him? And therefore, how high would we go?

Incidentally, given we're generally unleakable as a club, I'd say the rumours of us chasing Lever have almost certainly been leaked from Lever's management to up their client's asking figure.

Completely agree. Different sport in basketball, but at 185cm and 40 years old I'm not phased by an equally unagile player at 190cm. I've done ok defending former Demon Daniel Clarke who is 205cm because he wasn't athletic. An agile, 180cm player who has a vertical leap however...

Athelticism is far more important than paper height when you're in the same ball park, and when Joe Daniher or Rory Lobb are marking at full stretch while jumping it wouldn't matter how tall the defender is.

i've often thought afl players should be measured with one arm up. i.e. from the ground to the tip of the finger on the raised arm.

the shoulder to top of head is irrelevant

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
