AFL Round 2 - Non MFC Games (2017)

I just wonder if it's worth relocating the Suns to Tassie. There'd be more buy in from supporters down there. QLD will never turn to the AFL. They, like NSW, don't support sport enough anyway. You only have to look at rugby attendances for both codes. Union is dying and league is struggling. What say you, @Nasher? I know we've had this discussion multiple times, but given where the Suns are at I just wonder if the AFL should cut their losses.

For premiership favourite the AFL should be ashamed at the crowd!

Will no doubt inflate the few thousand.

Could never really understand how GWS was ever going to be a success crowd wise. It took years for Sydney to get crowds and they would have taken all the AFL followers years ago.

Can understand the TV audience issue but crowd wise.... nah.

When their success finishes they will be a disaster. Have a look at Brisbane's crowds now and they were once a real powerhouse both playing and crowd wise.

Suns remind me of us under neeld.

Rocket will Be gone before mid season and the afl will have to install a coach to fix them

Haha, absolutely. Was my thinking too.

Yep, agreed, mate. I don't think it's just the senior coach either. It seems to be an unhappy place to be.

I always thought it was a mistake with two more northern missionary clubs whilst the Lions and Swans still depend on continuous success to remain viable. One of the expansion clubs should have gone to Tassie for sure. The arguments against as put up br the AFL are weak. All they could see was population size and potential $$$ to be earned. The north/south Tassie divide would evaporate once there was a complete Tassie side. Crowds have been good for other AFL matches and home games can be alternated north and south. TV audiences would have been far better with aTassie side than with either GC and GWS. Time to pull the plug, cut losses and relocate GC to Tassie and prepare GWS for eventual move to Canberra.

What the hell are they doing up in Sydney? What's with the rock garden behind the goals to the left of screen? They've just conceded that they'll never fill the house at that end of the ground.

Agree on Tasmania .... not so sure about Canberra from a success point of view but it could certainly be no worse than Western Sydney.

Gold Coast is a very strange market reflecting the nature of the place. Does it have a soul ... I am not sure.

Was reading an interesting article yesterday about the Raiders relocating to Las Vegas. Very similar issues to a Gold Coast team perhaps

Now that could get funny.

The rumour is, Collingwood will pick up Roos as "football manager" and if/when Buckley stumbles, install him as coach. (Not sure Roos is on board with that idea -- currently it's a Collingwood wet dream.)

Now what if the AFL hand picked Roos as the new coach of the Suns AFTER Buckley is sacked and BEFORE Eddie installs him as coach?

That is an absolute joke... Worse then when Port used the banners. How embarrassing

Why would you move a team from Western Sydney to Canberra? Bad call. There is growth potential in Western Sydney, where Gold Coast isn't big enough or football loving enough.

Gold Coast is closer to Hawaii than Melbourne is!

I'd be [censored] off if I was Leon Cameron. I reckon GWS have a real cultural problem, which may continue to cost them the flag, despite all their talent. They play like millionaires and lack that killer instinct. They should have beaten the Suns by close to 100 if they were serious flag contenders today. It should have been 50 or 60 points the difference at half time, but they took their foot off the pedal and let the Suns get a few in a row.

The AFL gave the GC and GWS a heap of picks and money to try and get the clubs successful straight away.

They gave GWS the most and they are obviously now a very very strong side.

But I really question the long term viability of both. Even if GWS win the flag this year and maybe even another 2 or 3, eventually they will be back to having the same picks and salary cap as everyone else. Once that happens they will completely fall apart.

There will be no one turning up, players will just walk out as who would want to play in front of 10,000 people every week when other teams average over 35,000 every game.

What a waste of time, money and talent it will be.

The umpires are sucked in by the play on at all times philosophy of Footscray. Many times there were decisions of infringement that could have been paid against Footscray but in the interest of play on at all times the play was not interrupted. I think Footscray are instructing their on ballers, particularly, to use this to their advantage.Meanwhile the free kicks and consequent results continue in their favour.

Incidentally are there any ex Footscray players, coaches on the umpiring Tribunal?

I'm sure your first para is the crux.  The dogs are so quick the umps are caught napping and do not want to slow down play.

Also, we should really go out and get Josh Kelly.

Went to school with Jayden Hunt and Christian Salem. He would complement our tough on ballers perfectly.

Brisbane started in 1986 (30 years ago) and then relocated to Brisbane as the Brisbane Lions in 1996 (twenty years ago). It had three premierships in a row but now they are lucky to draw crowds averaging 17,000 in a city of 2.2 million.

GWS will be going to emulate Brisbane from an attendance viewpoint

They were saying before on the broadcast it's for the Sydney show or something. Then dermott said he wouldn't be surprised if apaches came out like the Wild West. Pretty cringeworthy all round

It is all about getting a TV audience on the East Coast..Tasmania is not part of anything now, or going forward

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.
