Im not so sure. We were massivly outnumbered around that stoppage and with watts in the ruck and it took that bit of brilliance and desire from Oliver to set up that goal. I would suspect that goodwin might look at that in the review and say great effort from Watts, Oliver and Jones but where was everyone else? We are meant to be controling clearances with numbers at the ball arnt we?

Maybe they are happy to have more on the outside in a forward 50 stoppage scenario but if Hickey had won the hitout as he probably should have, they would have had an uncontested rebound 50. Im not trying to be negative because it was a great sequence but at the same time I would like them to just ask the question of each other, we cant hope to have that work against the best sides.

Just give Oliver as much space as he needs to work his magic.

I agree with this,  we seem to set up with nobody goal side in the fwd 50, we are all behind the ball or outside  and assume we have a wall set up just outside the 50

So, like, a bee's d then? Cause that's all the space he actually needs.

When clarry starts regularly hitting the score board, and he will, he will become one of the comps best mids very quickly

Surely this thread should be called Clearance Oliver?

...and remove the AA Captain, currently the most marketable face of our football club and all round champion.  Our colours were blazoned on tv during the weekend football coverage in the NAB ads with Daisy and little kids in mfc jumpers.  Any idea what that will do to gain future supporters.

Remove Daisy...Bad Call. Disrespectful call.

If Oliver continues to earn his stripes, just add him...no need to remove anyone - unless you were making some other pointed point...

Just to get a little more perspective on where growth will come from in Aussie Rules - on one of the fox footy shows last night - last season in the amateurs there was not one womens team - this season ? 41 teams  !

The growth of females playing the game now there is a path is unprecedented. The growth in terms of teams and participants is spectacular.

This can only be good for the game  - Embrace the Daisy ! ( and the rest of the team !)

Cant believe nobody has thought of that yet, its almost too perfect.

Cheers PA.....think its catching on......

:)

He is a very tough player but also has good polish....I think he is destined to become elite in future years. Only 19 to!

I liked Roos' line about Oliver's footage and his ranking; 'if there 14 better players than Oliver, it must be an unbelievable draft.'

I recall a similar conversation on here with Clint Biz around the same time, over footage of Oliver.

A fantastic article by Ben Guthrie that highlights his journey to the AFL.

Worth a read.

Interesting that Macca suggested he latch onto Viney and Stretch and learn from them - just shows how highly Stretch is thought of.

If last weeks BOG performance was classified by Macca as  'just scratching the surface of what he was capable of...' then other teams had better watch out.  For us:  Happy Days

Roos always did have a good eye for talent! :roos:

If all of our players were as professional and had the work habits of billy stretch we would be flag favourites. It's a big part of why he's loved by all his coaches

Clarrie Oliver will be a top ten player within 2-3 years

Probably the most obvious statement on demonland :P

Message to demon coaches: Please please teach the kid to left hand handball. 100 handballs on his left after every training. Combine that with a couple more preseasons and watch out.

Clayton Oliver

Week 1 vs St Kilda: 36 touches (88% efficiency), five marks and seven tackles.

Week 2 vs Carlton: 35 touches (80% efficiency), seven marks and nine tackles.

:roos:

Gotta learn not to turn back and look for a handball when he is bloody clear. Did it a few times in the first half.

I don't remember, but I'll claim it.

He was very good today, but certainly wasn't the damaging player he was in the first game.

At least he still managed to get a lot of the ball after a week of media hype, most of our players struggle after being praised like that.

Not saying he wasnt good. Along with Salem amd jetta in our best.

Think he needs to back his own skills.

Many effective possessions but meaningless.

That's an oxymoron.

People forget how bad a shape he was in prior to Christmas - summoned to the rehab group he was in such poor nick. Decided to take it seriously from that point and is producing elite numbers already. I shudder to think how good he'll be when he starts taking the off seasons seriously.

Clarry Choo Choo.. what a sensational player!! How many 19 year olds get 70 odd possesions in TWO games in a handful of games in only his second year?
Agree though,... back himself to use very good footskills more vto advantage! Just wait till he goes forward and kicks a couple of gials per match!

SPELLBINDING STUFF!

  • POSTGAME: Collingwood

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.

  • CASEY: Collingwood

It was freezing cold at Mission Whitten Stadium where only the brave came out in the rain to watch a game that turned out to be as miserable as the weather.
The Casey Demons secured their third consecutive victory, earning the four premiership points and credit for defeating a highly regarded Collingwood side, but achieved little else. Apart perhaps from setting the scene for Monday’s big game at the MCG and the Ice Challenge that precedes it.
Neither team showcased significant skill in the bleak and greasy conditions, at a location that was far from either’s home territory. Even the field umpires forgot where they were and experienced a challenging evening, but no further comment is necessary.
