AFL LIVE PASS OUTRAGE

I just don't understand why the AFL doesn't embrace the online world like it should.  They would have tens of thousands of subscribers if they offered lots of options, but instead they act as if it's still 1997 and not 2017.  I just don't understand it.

I've got Foxtel so it doesn't worry me as such, but then I've only really got it for Fox Footy.  I'd happily get rid of Foxtel and get a good, online service, but Telstra and the AFL just treat us with disrespect.

They dont embrace it because they get alot more out of the broadcast deal if they make it a nightmare to watch any other way. They would be lucky to get half as much if people could just watch it online without needing to pay for fox or watch channel 7's [censored] shows either side for the games

It's not just the AFL 'Wise'...

I was going to say the government but let me say more broadly that our elected representatives are in collusion with the big media players to lock up the shop.

We are the worse for policy decisions that make us a backward country rivalling the days of 6 o'clock closing.

I've used an iPhone to HDMI cord which worked fairly well last year. Didn't try it last night so not sure about this new problem. May enable a workaround the airplay issue though?

As someone who used airplay last year but could use a HDMI cable, I'd be grateful if you could please try this soon and let us know the result.  Otherwise it's yo ho ho and a bottle of rum even if I have to wait a day or two.  (I'm not paying to wait a day for a full screen version Mr AFL.)

Works well for me.

Same.

I pay my membership to the club.
And stick it to the man.
Fork 'em.

Foxtel are just as pathetic the way they structure their offering. I'm the same, bought it for the footy but when GOT was on Showcase it was an added bonus. Now they've moved Showcase to the Premium movie channel so you have to cough up extra for that. Strokers.

Is Showcase premium now?  Damn it!!  I didn't know that.

I get what everyone else is saying, though.  I guess I was just complaining out loud about it and I'm genuinely gob smacked as to why the AFL can't see the value in making their online service much better than it is.  I'm sure people would pay a little more so they can stream on TV, and I'm also certain they can get lots of advertising at quarter time, half time etc as well.  I might be naive about it all but I just wish the AFL would see sense for once.

Yeah I agree. However, it's clearly a strategy to direct more customers to Foxtel and would be a significant contract item in the broadcast deal.

Screen sharing still works for me - iphone (iOS 10) to apple tv is my example. PM me for info ( dunno if its wise to flaunt it here...)+

 My tv last night...

I've never got Foxtel because I don't want anything they offer other than the AFL and refuse to pay for that unwanted product.  I'd feel the same way if Coles forced me to buy grapes, plums and ham when I just wanted an apple.  Now that people can get  by other means much of the non-footy stuff that Foxtel offers, Foxtel is toast.  So they are keeping the footy in a tight fist trying to milk the last cent they can.

It looks like we won't get anything sensible out of the AFL until their current Foxtel and free-to-air contracts expire.

Living outside Melbourne I can't get to games. I (and 2 other family members) pay Demons memberships which frankly is worthless to us (bar emotion), and now I'm expected to pay for some inflated Foxtel service or just watch endless GWS and Sydney games. P!ssed off with the AFL is too mild a word.

Very true.  It's a shame that's part of the deal.  If they offered better coverage they could get far more money out of it but, as you say, their interests seemingly lie elsewhere.

Does anyone have an international AFL account?  Is this the same for everyone - I just signed up for this year last week and I'll be very annoyed if I can't see full size apple mirrored - it's not like I have any other options to watch it.

Foxtel must be haemorraghing customers or at the very least its growth rate is nil.

Netflix and Amazon are eating their lunch and the future does not look pretty.

Sport is the last bastion of their defence and even that is limited to local sport as we have seen with Optus taking the EPL

The Foxtel model of giving lots of nothing for say $50 a month and then asking another $10 here and another there for anything you want to watch is fast becoming  a dinosaur. I give it 5-10 years at the very outside

International account allows you to stream in reasonably high quality on a desktop It seems to be HD or close to it either way it's 100x better than the tablet. You can also stream the actual Foxfooty channel 24/7

Foxtel are now hosting the International AFL broadcast online this year – I used it last year (Its called WatchAFL) and I was able to use a VPN to watch all Melbourne games on my laptop no matter where I was, for example in Hawthorn. This saved me having to fork out and purchase Foxtel.

But I signed up again last night and it wouldn't load up with the VPN running – had a quick look at their FAQs and it mentions you will be unable to view the feed if you're running a VPN. Not sure what the next work around might be now!

My understanding is the only real way for them to determine if a user is using a VPN is by checking if the IP they detect is registered to a VPN provider (which will also provide false positives). Since it is nearly impossible to register them all, they would surely not be able to detect every VPN.

Regardless I havent used the international in the past because my tablet was enough.... But just a phone now? geez, they wonder why people look at the illegal options.

safe to say it's completely illegal.

the only way to live stream in full screen on an ipad is with foxtel go now. that's why news paid $2.5bn in rights.

I just wish they didn't charge us that much per person to watch it.

it's $50 a month isn't it, for all sport including espn and be-in channels as well as the 'standard' channels?

if you like nba and champions league as well as afl, international cricket, and drama, comedy and the like it's hardly break the bank stuff.

I have no interest in the rest of what Foxtel offers. so for me i would be geting it for footy. $600 a year bloody expensive

I tried the Live Pass last night, get it free from Telstra, to test it out, from phone to tv worked fine, have an Android Samsung

As for Foxtel showing games, Mountain View in Richmond is the go, excellent food and McCracken on tap

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
