remember when we were so desperate for leadership the caption had to be out of Davey, Green or Moloney?   fook me.  No offence to those 3, solid players but not natural leaders by any stretch

things have finally turned around!!!

I think you're underselling Green, I would of had him in my team over Junior.

The thing about leadership is that leaders lead, they don't need a title or permission they just do it. Lewis will lead because he is a leader regardless of being voted into the LG in a popularity contest.

Jones - Gawn - Viney - Lewis - Watts

I would love Jetta to be in the leadership group.

I think some players just need to focus on their game, and be the best they can be.  The likes of Jetta fits that category in my view.  He's the unofficial leader of our indigenous boys (albeit not a huge group), so that's an important role for him.  I mean all that in a "nice, lovey-dovey" way, not a "Jetta's not a leader" way!

At this stage I would have the likes of Watts and Tyson in said group.

LG - Gawn, Lewis, McDonald, Vince

That's all it needs to be (I would actually give Vince the opportunity to decide if he wants to be in it or not).

Lewis doesn't need to be in the top 2 positions to still be able to use his voice.  I'm sure any player is encouraged to speak up at any time, especially if they are walking the talk.

Disagree. I think he can.

talking leadership not general player quality.... surely your not suggesting Green is captain material?

I'm glad the "a" wasn't autocorrected with "u"!!!!!

You dont need to be appointed to be a leader

Does appointment only confirm reality?

I am with BBPowell. The leadership group should be restricted to no more than 3  - captain, vice, deputy vice - to lead by example and provide encouragement at training and on the field. Nathan Jones, Jack Viney and Max Gawn. The players and supporters would follow them anywhere. I know I would.

In addition, some players are worthy of being appointed as on field leaders - T Mac backs, Jordan Lewis midfield and Jack Watts forwards - to have the coaches authority to direct team mates during the match on positioning, match ups and filling gaps. They are mature, key players who should have an understanding of what is required in matches.

Keep it simple.

Hi all,  first time poster, long time reader. Felt compelled to join to bring up a simple factor in electing lewis to co-captaincy. Jack Viney is our next captain. Who's going to tell him he's not?

Great. Another search for a new coach begins.

I fear for any man standing between young Jack and what he wants.

Jokes aside (as I feel Viney is a man who would do anything his coach asked, even give up his own possible aspirations),  my hopes for our leadership group stand on it being player selected, then coach approved. So:

c: jones vc: viney

Lg: lewis gawn mcdonald

i think that's plenty. Love to see everyone step up on game day, but have these solid voices around the club speaking to/for them

I don't really understand the leadership group.

Captain and Vice Captain should be enough. The rest should step up and be a leader in there own right.

It's an understandable stance, but reality is, there will be a leadership group, so best you start thinking of a few other players to add to the list!

Why??

I don't have a say who gets picked.

Watts has had single year of consistent AFL-standard football. Why on earth would he be given a golden ticket into the group on the back of that? That's 'Melbourne of old' nonsense. He just needs to concentrate on backing up the year he just had and improve again.

Gawn is in the same boat. Back it up next year. How many past players have rotated through the 'leadership group' only to show anything but leadership?

I'd like it to be a small but tight group of Jones, Lewis, Vince (he needs to take control of games next year given his age and games experience), T-Mac, Jetta and Viney.

And yeh Saty, I'm completely aware that none of our opinions 'matter' so save yourself the post.

I'd go Jones, Lewis, Viney, T Mac and Jetta. Vince really isn't a leader and wouldn't be mistaken as such if he hadn't played as many games as he has. I love Bernie, but not as a leader.

Agree completely with the Watts and Gawn sentiment, though I wouldn't be surprised to see Gawn in the leadership group this year.

Gawn was in the leadership group last season and I'd be extremely surprised not to see him in it for 2017 after the year he just had.

Generically, I agree with you, Thrice and Wiseblood on the issue of Co-Captains. I didn't even consider it as a possibility until I read some suggestion on another thread that McCartney had apparently floated the idea as a possibility.

Relevantly, I have absolute respect for Jones - I love the bloke and his commitment to this club. My view here is not intended to be a slight on him or his Captaincy - he deserves the position and I think that he should, and obviously will, be maintained in the gig.

That said, we have super unusual circumstances here. It is extremely rare that a senior and super well credentialled leader from a highly successful club with potentially more success in front of it, and with that player genuinely having gas left in the tank for at least another three years, seeks out a developing (and let's face it, criminally unsuccessful club over the past 10 years) and says 'I want to join you guys, help you with your development and share in the success over the next few years that we will achieve'.

It seems clear that Lewis has joined the club for legitimate reasons. It also seems clear that he commands the respect and ear of the entire player group, including Jones.

I however want to see him empowered. For the very reasons each of you are concerned about the Co-Captaincy piece, ironically I think it's a good idea. What I would not like to see is for Lewis not talk to the group at the huddle at 3/4 time in a tight final even though:

- he should because he has stacks of experience in such a situation but doesn't want to be seen to be usurping Jones' authority as Captain; and

- Jones himself would probably want Lewis to talk to the group but doesn't want to appear to the player group as an impotent Captain in the circumstances.

Having Lewis as a Co-Captain negates this. Think about it.

We are developing club with aspirations to play finals, and not just one of them. Our leaders including Jones have little to no experience in this zone. Lewis has it in spades.

And I want him, and others like Jones, to feel that they have unrestricted access to that knowledge and experience. I suspect Jones would actually be slightly relieved with such an appointment. It's no slight on him, just recognition that we have a new Centurion in the group who needs to be properly empowered for the benefit of everyone.

One cannot under-estimate the importance of Lewis to our future success in the coming years. Let's just embrace it.

Goodwin floated the idea near the end of last year. It's not a ridiculous idea at all. If the players and coaches feel Jones and Lewis would lead them well in a battle, giving them both the title doesn't diminish what Jones has worked for. He's still the captain of the club and Lewis is a genuine star of the game. I wouldn't be worried about it dividing the playing group or diminishing the respect the players/coaches have for Jones.

You have a few months off from footy and you completely forget what the heck happened the previous season. :P

He won't miss out then.

Existence is meaningless.

Nihilistic existentialism rules.

Hogan, Bradshaw, stretch, hunt should all be emerging leaders this year.

I agree with with most that jack Viney is our next captain, but I reckon billy stretch is a good enough character or leader to do the job and be a long term member of our leadership groups when you look at his training habits, desire to learn and willingness to play to his role and the game plan over individual glory. How do you know this? I know many in the footy world where shocked when Bernie's best mate Tex Walker was named Crow's skipper ahead of Dangerfield and Sloane. Inside the Adelaide club it was a matter of when and not if Tex got the job. My point is, how would any of us really know who is regarded as a leader by the players at MFC???

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.
