It is certainly debatable what is appropriate.

Did the 16yo gymnast that lost a gold medal for taking a panadol at the Sydney Olympics get treated appropriately? I would argue that footballers have been treated very lightly by comparison as an example.

That players are not lacking culpability. The proponents of the scheme should never be allowed near a sporting club again IMO. And that includes the Doctor.

Wow - did that really happen, Jnr? (Not doubting you, I'm just surprised. For a panadol?)

Wasn't panadol, it was apparently Nurofen and her coach gave it to her. Many pain killers and cold meds used to, and many still do, contain psuedoephedrine which is a banned substance.

Just goes to show why it is so important for athletes to check everything they take and don't trust anyone but ASADA with what is banned and what is not. Just goes to show the whole defense the players went with of 'but the people we trusted said it was fine'. Does not cut it by a mile, even though very few, if any, in AFL land actually get this yet!

Yes my bad. It was for Nurofen. Was prescribed by the team doctor I recall. Very tough outcome. The EFC are very lucky.

Russia should not have been allowed to compete at rio.

Sad day for world sport.

Of course if they were afl players theyd just be great blokes who are victims of an afl/asada lead conspiracy.

I'm trying to work out which is more likely:

  • they were allowed to compete because Stephen Dank provided compelling evidence to show how the Russian athletes did nothing wrong; or
  • they were allowed to compete because the Russians were able to prove they had no association with Stephen Dank.

Cotchin and Mitchell are now the official 2012 Brownlow medalists.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/sam-mitchell-and-trent-cotchin-get-2012-brownlow-medals-20161213-gt9u65.html

Interesting that Crotchin contacted Jobe:   "I've reached out to Jobe. I thought that was the right thing to do,"

Mitchell on the hand:   'Mitchell was even briefer when asked if he was thinking of Watson..."No, I'm going to leave that," Mitchell said'.

Its pretty clear what Mitchell thinks!  His silence backs up his syringe in the arm 'mime' of a few years ago.  Good on him for not giving credence to the 'poor Jobe' charade that seems to have infected most in the wider AFL world.

Edit:  Sam McClure is making a strong case for Jobe to actually hand back the medal http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/sam-mitchell-and-trent-cotchin-have-their-2012-brownlow-medals-jobe-its-time-to-hand-yours-back-20161214-gtb3pr.html

Quotes:

  • The AFL doesn't have it.
  • Essendon say they don't want to know where it is.
  • Watson himself is telling people he's unsure of its exact location.

In fact, the AFL is adamant that the location of the medal is of no interest to it.

So Jobe keeps his medal after all.  Rather insulting to Crotchin and Mitchell.

Sorry Gill - when the man is right - the man is right!

If Hird's puppets have to be allowed back , they should have to sneak down the race under cover of darkness. Switch the lights off when they run out for the first game and ban the theme song!

An interesting piece of intrigue:  "...as the AFL still refused to say where Watson’s medal was and whether he had given it back".

That has a hollow ring of truth - if it was given back they would say so, right?

Probably part of the 'deal', something like - no problem, Jobe, yeah just tell the media you will give it back but tuck Charlie away in a bottom draw for a while and keep it quiet.

Set up right there for some future amnesty and 'return' of the medal to 'poor Jobe'...probably to coincide with his intro to he "Hall of Shame Fame".

The AFL are truly a disgrace.  Many of us have said it on DL, if it wasn't for the love of the Dees I would give AFL away.

Rather, it's pretty clear what you think Mitchell thinks.

It's possible that Mitchell detests Jobe; that Mitchell likes Jobe and feels any discussion is unhelpful; that Mitchell has decided that private conversations should remain private; that Mitchell had always intended speaking to Jobe after the awards ceremony; that Mitchell had spoken to Jobe and made a promise not to speak to the media; that Mitchell was sorry and embarrassed for his 'syringe mime' and therefore didn't want to be reminded of that should any comment he make result in him being asked about it. I could go on.

Yep, and he could pass all that onto the kids he teaches in class! I think not...

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t
