There was an interesting point raised on SEN this afternoon.  They suggested that the Richmond board hire a notable, knowledgeable football figure or three to conduct an independent review of their list and give them a comprehensive and brutally honest rundown of exactly what they have.  The theory obviously being that they can't trust anyone in the club to give them a realistic assessment.  I actually think there's a lot of merit in the idea and it would give them a much better idea of whether they need to keep backing Hardwick or move him on and bring in someone who will manage a rebuild.

If most people can their list is going nowhere, why can't the Richmond board? They're gunshy on sacking another coach, otherwise Hardwick would have been gone years ago.

The challenging thing with that is that the independant group wouldn't see the day to day growth of the players, i would suggest someone like Jayden Hunt would have been rated by an independant person the same was as Demonland rated him when clearly internally we knew we had our hands on a very good player.

having said that i don't think the Tigers have that sort of talent or any capacity to develop it even if they did.

I'm so glad I'm not a Richmond supporter (for so many reasons). Right now I'd be despairing for my club and wondering why the Board members haven't had the guts to resign.

Absolutely! 

Jonothan Brown makes a fantastic point in on the couch this week about their list, they have 5 A graders who are a little older and probably won't be there for their next flag but it's hard to name a single young player on their list who looks any chance of being an A grade talent, and they're still looking like trading a pick 6 our for an injury prone Dion Prestia and second round pick out for an older Travis Cloke. 

the sooner they sack Dimma and decide to go down the path of a full re-build the better, because if they haven't done that in 2 years they'll be every bit as concerning as we were when Roosy joined and the Lions are now. 

The AFL can't just bail teams out for making horrible decisions all the time.

It says a lot about the basket case that the Lions ultimately became. Despite it being clear that PR was coming to us, they put all their eggs in one basket by sacking Voss in the belief they could land Roosy. Despite Roosy's admitted emotional attachment to the old Lions, there is no way he would have gone to such a shambles of a club.

Left with arze left out of their trousers, I felt they thought that if they couldn't get the best available former player (though how much of a genuine connection Roosy could have to the Brisbane Lions is debatable), they would just go with the first available one.

It almost warmed my heart in that that was the kind of ill conceived, cockamamie kind of thinking that would have come about with us from 2008 onwards!

I think one of the big differences is Roosy said a few times he felt we had a fair bit of talent that was either underperforming or not being developed, Trenners, Watts, Grimes ect

I think the Lions have some Raw young talent that should be okay and some reasonable but injury prone senior players but i think their turn around might be a bit longer than ours.

Results wise yes. However, how we handled our approach versus how they handled theirs was night and day and was probably where I could have been more articulate.

PJ had a clear vision as to what he wanted from our next coach and in indeed what was required from the entire club as far as the rebuild went. He had a backup plan should he not be able to talk Roosy out of retirement. He was flexible in his dealings and had kept well in mind what was required to land his fish. He (and the club) had also made the coaching position vacant a long time in advance so they he had ample time to do his homework to get the best possible candidate to the club. In short, he ran a professional, thorough and well thought out recruiting process.

The Lions seemed to get a slight whisper that Paul Roos might be on the market and may be interested in coaching again. Instead of letting Vossy finish out the year (he was sitting at 8-11 and had winnable games coming up against GWS and the Dogs), they informed him that his contract wouldn't be extended with no plan B. All they had was a wing and a prayer plan that Roosy might come back because... Fitzroy. If they had done their homework, they would have realized that he was deep into negotiations with Melbourne and that a decision based on looking for a coach shouldn't be based on wild speculation and half baked guesses.

Say what you would like about our playing stocks but how both admins handled their coaching searches were night and day. If Roosy were smart (and we all know he is), he would have taken one look at the Lions and would have stayed well away.

PJ is more trusted than Swan and I think it's pretty well documented that a significant amount of the AFL's bail out money was going towards luring Roos.

We were a shambles, no doubt, but PJ had the AFL's support.
