On matters VFL, with the Dolphins in serious trouble financially I was wondering if we may be down to 14 teams next year and no bye.

Casey were great today. Box Hill matched them for 3 quarters, thanks mainly to our wayward goal shooting, but Casey demolished them during the last quarter. Kennedy, Kennedy-Harris, Neil-Bullen, Oliver, Michie and Grimes were great, Pederson stamped authority when it was needed. All these players ought to be required players during the next phase of the development of the MFC. And, Chris Dawes who sat in the interchange hub and coached and encouraged them when they came off.

Getting rid of those all too frequent byes, by whatever means, would be a serious contribution to both the VFL and the AFL.  They are a blight on the alignment.

In boxing parlance you would describe the Scorpions' win over the Hawks in the last hit out for the season before the finals as a "slugfest". 

From the very beginning of the bout, the opponents traded heavy blows with first one, then the other seemingly on top. After all, this was a fight between the  heavyweight champion of recent times in the VFL and the new contender. The Box Hill Hawks are on their way down, the Casey Scorpions are on the rise with their eyes on the championship belt. A win would go along way to securing a title bout but for the Hawks, it was their last chance to go out fighting. 

And so, at the City Oval on a cool, windy afternoon, the Hillmen did come out slugging and they landed the early blows. They were ahead on points early (4-0) before scoring goals through the agency of AFL premiership players Matt Spangher and Will Langford. When the bell rang to close off the first quarter, the visitors were goalless and in fact were smarting, having kicked only one goal in their last three quarters of football after their poor finish last week.

Five minutes into the second term, Box Hill now kicking against the breeze, scored another goal to go to a handy 16 point lead. It was up to big hitter Cam Pedersen to stop the bleeding and in short time, he landed two heavy blows to narrow the margin to four points before Dean Terlich put them in front. Viv Michie landed another before the half time bell and the Scorpions were 9 points in front.

It was lively rover Ben Kennedy who came to the fore and extended the points lead to 14 but the Hawks refused to be beaten. They picked themselves up and got off the canvas swinging wildly but hitting the mark, kicking the next four goals and reversing the Casey lead to go into the final round with a 9 point lead.

The time had come for the Scorpions to step up. Kennedy scored first but the home side hit back with another from Langford. The sparring continued and big man Jake Spencer scored the next blow and the Scorps kept coming - a rushed behind leveling the scores at 55 apiece. Jack Grimes put them in front by a point. Kennedy who along with Alex Neal-Bullen had been the outstanding small man in the ring on the ground, kicked his third goal and a flurry of minor scores ensued before Cam Pedersen landed the killer blow at the 17 minute mark. Box Hill were down on the ropes - there was no coming back. Dean Terlich added injury to insult, the lead was out to 25 points and, with the news of Collingwood's loss to Footscray, the Scorpions were heading to the top of the ladder.

When Clayton Oliver who was one of the stars of the day (finishing with a game high 33 disposals) marked and passed off to Michie for his second, the Hawks' fans were calling in the referee to stop the fight and call a technical knock out. The season was over for them.

But it will continue next week for Casey which just keeps on punching. They have a strong list of AFL listed players qualified and on this display, you would expect them to win a final for the first time since the alignment began with Melbourne. Casey listed players like Angus Scott and skipper Jack Hutchins add to the side's quality. They have a good enough mix of experience and youth to go all the way and claim the VFL's heavyweight crown.

The late season winning run of the Scorpions Development League team came to an end in the top-of-the-ladder clash against Box Hill who won by 20 points. Casey retained second position going into the finals and will be looking forward to the rematch.

Expecting (hoping) that ANB will have a big preseason and establish a spot in the seniors next year.  He is a magnet in the reserves, but clearly the coaching staff think it's best for his development to not give him extended time in the seniors.

Clearly a player that is far to good for VFL level.  As a 2nd year player, I think it's far too early to tell if he's a "Grimes type" (i.e. too good for VFL, not good enough for AFL).

Poor ball use and decision making. 

It just shows the gulf between AFL and VFL.

Can't say I'm a fan.

Trengove was celerbration his one year contract for next year. He will be much better in 2017.

"But the Scorpions are expected to regain midfielders Jack Trengove and Matt Jones, further boosting their midfield, and young forward Sam Weideman ... Ben Newton, who played in the Development League, and Christian Salem, who played for Melbourne, will also be in the selectors' calculations."

Not a bad group for selectors to chose from. 

With Oliver in there as well it will be great for a few of the young guys to experience finals and hopefully the ultimate success.  No 'mental scars' for them.  Look forward to watching their finals.

Maybe as a rookie at struggling teams, Brisbane,Tigers, Essendon, Dockers? But who knows, I am sure Viv does not know anything at this stage. 

I thought the poor disposal on show at Geelong yesterday showed just how unlucky he was to be dropped. Against Carlton he went at 90% for 20 disposals. He seems to take time in his delivery and as a result has very good DE. Certainly one of the best disposals at MFC. Plenty of others were far less effective than Viv in the Carlton game. As I said after that game if Hogan had kicked the two goals Viv hit up for then his impact would have been rated higher. Also thought that Roos could have and should have switched him into the middle at some stage. He is okay as a HBFer but is a better mid and plays the defensive mid role really well. Don't think Viv has been given the opportunity at Melbourne others have but that's footy. Reckon he should have gone to Essendon this year. 

Interesting to note that no matter where he plays he dominates the inside 50s. 7 yesterday and 10 the previous Casey game (off the HBF). 

Looking forward to him playing finals at Casey. Pity he can't win the B&F or Liston. Hasn't played enough games. 

Geelong VFL defeated Port Melbourne today which means Casey will play Footscray next week in one of the qualifying finals. The Bulldogs scored a narrow one point win over the Scorpions at their only meeting this year - a game played on a windswept Whitten Oval earlier in the season.

They were broke 42 years ago when I did a preseason there.

But they're still around.

The finals schedule has come out and the Scorpions' game is on Saturday v Footscray but not televised. That's a good sign because Casey seem to do better when the cameras are not around.

If he's on track for a recall it's only a 5 day break
