If anyone can remember the end to the 87 season, we won the last 5 games to sneak into 5th spot after 23 years of pain. We had to win the last game away to Footscray and relied on the Hawks to beat Cats at Kardinia.

Just drawing on the similarities to this year.

The point being when we did make finals we did damage.

COME ON!!!

Was just telling my son the same thing.  At the beginning it wasn't even in contemplation. Each week the belief built. Round 22 still my favourite Dee's experience. Closely followed by the first two finals. Closely followed by one of the worst experiences of my life at the Prelim.

I hope Gawny doesn't run through the mark though….

I think I died a little inside thinking about that....

I do enjoy hearing people speaking of us as s bigger threat should we get in than a team that was unbeaten until round 10!

Yes those were the days my son.

Tell me again dad when Melbourne made the finals.

1987 was the reason I started barracking for the Demons.  Didn't have a side before then, I was 9 y/o and got swept up in the "Do it for Robbie" buzz.

When we lost the Prelim to the Hawks I was in tears.

Since then I've been hooked.

Go Dees.

Ah yes I've heard many a tale about the 1987 season (Was 2 at the time). Lets repeat the history and start the revolution!

We couldn't have another ending like that one.

Nothing can be like '87.

23 years in the wilderness ..........almost a whole city barracking for you..........having the wind for three quarters at Waverley and then that unbelievable end to the dream. After the siren the crowd was hushed. People wandered the car park trying to understand what had happened that day. It was very special.

No it's not '87 but it is a very good feeling.

Special!! It was absolutely gut wrenching. Like a family death

My mates car was parked next to The Whorethorn Cheer Squad Van.

We didn't move for nearly 2 hours!!

my mate went off his nana

Sorry, I was very young and living in NZ, no idea about footy back in 87 - what actually happened that caused so much heartbreak?

I was at the Western Oval that day and if I remember rightly, there was a loud cheer for what seemed no apparent reason, it was in fact when Hawthorn hit the front.

We knew before we left the ground that we were in the finals and it was just the best feeling you could imagine.  I think it was because we had been in the wilderness for such a long time.

We should have never lost the game against Hawthorn we were in front all day and by a fair margin for most of it, when they started to come back I just sat there and hoped we could hold out but it wasn't to be, like losing a test match on the last ball of the day.

We will beat Carlton and Geelong and once again hope that another side does the right thing by us.

Actually our position, is more like '86.  The level of our development I'm talking about, not the ladder position & recent wins, but our readiness.  We at a similar standard & maturity in our young stocks to 1986.

In '87, we recruited Viney, Spalding, Dean, Koop, etc,  which,  added to our young kids who all grew up playing together via U-19's reserves etc, added a lot of confidence, both footy ability & size/power confidence.

I always said I wanted a flag for my 30th birthday. It won't happen, but a finals appearance will be pretty magical regardless.

Get yourself a free day.  Imagine a lowly team who hadnt made the finals in aeons with a champion captain in his last year.  They come good in the 2nd half of the season.  Youtube r22 v Footscray.  Elim vs Nortn Melb.  Semi vs Sydney.  Preliminary vs Hawthorn.

It feels a little bit like 87,  but we have played in 2 grand finals and multiple final campaigns since then so it doesn't feel quite the same. The relief after the Footscray game was as big as the excitement. 23 years of always missing out - it felt like Oliver Twist was finally allowed inside the shop to experience the treats for the first time. 87 was pure joy.

This time the feelings are more based on justice and anger - that our club stuffed us up,  the whole "benefits of losing" administration, and the favouritism shown Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon while the Doggies and us struggled along. I want vengeance this time.

A sense of the crowds hunger for the Dees to win, win, win.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
