Brisbane gets priority pick

Bottom clubs don't need a PP, they need to pay their list accordingly. Clubs being forced to lay 95 to 100% of the salary cap is bullshitte. Spuds get paid too much like Dawes and Clark a few years back. the lions are in the exact same position. Over paying players coz the rules say they pay 100%

If the Lions had the money they could potentially land a big fish and keep Rockliff and Handley. Or off load these guys for their market value and get compensated well.

Until the AFL allows clubs to pay players their worth instead of over paying them as they need to reach a financial target, PP are in play. Give me a 2 nd round PP. As MFC supporters we should sympathise their position. Footy ain't fun being that shitte.....

Agree totally. It shows the ridiculous levels of power now belonging to the damn AFLPA.

I would be in favour of a much reduced minimum spend. Say 70% of cap. Teams like us of the past 10 years paying almost identical money to the Hawks, is one of the reasons we have been on the bottom the whole time.

Ridiculous, and needless.  Purely and simply, astonishing greed from the players association, and weak submission by the AFL.

Yep. 70% Salary Cap & 30% Performance Based

Been saying it for years...

3 for Frawley was a result of our ladder position. That's how FA compo works.............

Having said all of that, yes the AFL has looked after us, just not in the above cases. They looked after us in the form of financial aid, and of course, with Roos and Jackson.

If the AFL chose to offer that sort of support to the Lions, fine. But awarding them a PP is contradictory to what they told us and the public.........

I must admit to feeling like a persecuted Melbourne supporter. If we didn't deserve a priority pick after ten wins in 3 years with effectively a VFL list then no one should ever get one but of course they will. Then I remember that the AFL parachuted Jackson into the Club who subsequently got Roos.

The MFC was on its knees yet now, for the first time in decades, our future is built on solid foundations. How many first round picks is the non playing Jackson was worth?

I used to believe differently but I don't think first round priority picks help much.

i suppose if essendrugs gets a first round priority pick this year then why not the bears?

Well you are on your own there, as 18 AFL clubs and their footy departments would totally disagree with you.

Have you noticed in trade week, how trades can get held up, only because of a few places lower a pick is, than a club wants?

Clubs kill for good picks and you don't think they help much. Fair enough.

They won't help if the club is a shambles

It won't be a shambles with Noble and Fagan coming in, with their long experience with successful sides.

Let's wait and see. I reckon there are deep deep problems up there.

I may have worded it poorly. My point was I would rather have had the AFL get us Jackson at the time than be gifted a couple of first round picks. He has made a fundamental change to this club way more than two, three or more talented 18 year olds would have

Brisbane don't deserve a PP but bloody hell they could do with it. I'm a Brisbane resident and its tough seeing the Gabba only half-third full. Really effects Aussie Rules in general, particularly with the Broncos going well. They're a fickle bunch up here though and there'd be thousands jumping back on the bandwagon as soon as the Lions can scratch out some wins.

Footy on the GC is going well despite the Suns remaining in the bottom third of the comp. Their teams dominated the local league (outside of NEAFL) and the Suns games I've been to have seen a good following from locals and a bit of buzz around the game/ground.

Two teams in Queensland can definitely work. Brisbane are just a shambles at the moment and we've shown that can be turned around in a few years.

This was meant to be a comment on the PP but I've ended up defending Queensland footy. I guess I'm a little indifferent likes others. Should be outraged as we didn't get one but reckon Brisbane could do with a hand. Besides, it would mean Essendon don't get top pick...

Why didn't you say that in the first place...?

Given them the pick!

The requirement to pay at or near the salary cap goes back to the Fitzroy days where clubs like Fitzroy (and probably MFC) stayed afloat by paying well under what was the then the maximum cap. When the AFL took over ownership of the League the requirement to pay the salary cap made sense if we were to avoid an EPL situation.

Perhaps it is time for this requirement to be tweaked.

This is a team that won 3 flags in a row not so long ago. It is a vastly different situation to us.

They also picked up Fevola and cruelled their salary cap. We bottomed in quite possibly the worst period in history with the two expansion clubs. Yes we picked poorly but we were genuinely shiite when accused of tanking. It was as if we could have controlled whether we won games or not.

I understand all that. But our list needs genuine incentives to improve so we don't shut up shop in Round 21 because it's all a little too hard.

I think I am agreeing with you

Paying under the cap when players under perform makes perfect sense. It also allows for the lower paying clubs to use money to attract the bigger fish

Well that is different. Yes he has been the architect of change and our most valuable recruit.

And they get it!

AFL hypocrisy of the highest order!

Yes it's just been announced. What a disgrace. Essendrug getting the number one pick is also a disgrace. Reward for cheating.

I wonder if this extra pick will help us in trading Dunn?

May make them more willing to give up one of their 2nd rounders in a swap for other picks.

Fucken AFL are weak flogs. Other teams have rotted worse than the lions. They sacked Voss and he had 10 wins for the year. Its all their own fault. [censored] em.

Doubt it. I think Brisbane have cooled on Dunn and are red hot into Frost!

Feeling a bit on the down side today...this only adds to it.

It's getting harder & harder to see the AFL as a legitimate sport.

The organisation has no integrity and just makes up the rules on the run.

Pity I'm a rusted on supporter, makes it difficult to walk.

Question. Does this mean our pick moves back one?

Yes..

Absolute certainty.

Evans good mate Fagan goes to Lions and the perfect leg up, another pick.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
