That may be so but they copped a pretty big wack none the less and it was up to asada not the afl to charge the club for team based ped use - something they elected not to so

ASADA actually couldn't under the rules in play, under today's code they can and I think would have.

From memory the AFL actually wanted to charge the club back when all the penalties were dished out but the EFC refused to sign if it stayed in, hence it was reduced to 'exposure to risk'. There is nothing stopping the AFL from dishing out a penalty to the club under the bringing the game into disrepute clause for the use of PED's. They didn't because they are soft as butter and incredibly conflicted.

Except they won;t   We all know this

But back to this bloke Hibberd   who manages him btw ?

To be honest i reckon it is fair enough for them to get the first draft pick in the almost certain event rhey finish last.

Im no efc apologist but the players have received their penalties as has the club.

Perhaps an argument could be made that the afl should have foeseen this and applied it when they banned them from finals etc but they can't apply a new penalty now.

All that said i do wonder if they might consider giving the lions a priority pick and giving them number 1. Now that is something i would like to see!

I'd like to see the AFL give every club except Essendon a priority pick, thus making their first selection effectively pick 19.

Not going to happen though......

I can understand why any Essendon Players would love to play under the future prospects of what a Melbourne based package would have to offer them.

I say this with no disrespect willmoy, but.......

We bluebloods back the MFC through thick and thin, but I have no doubt that most players from opposition sides would call our bluff, and call "false dawn", as they have a few times over the past 2 decades or so.

We need to start winning games. Others can turn it around fast (witness bulldogs), but we have a long history of looking like a list full of young prodigies, only to fall flat on our face time after time. Start winning MFC, and stop making excuses to lose.

That's where the Don's players intimate relationship with our next coach will be telling. Hopefully Goodwin has their trust and respect, rare commodities at Windy Hill these days...

Not even close.

Not even the same galaxy.

Has turned into a better player than Wrecker I reckon.

Hibberd off half back would be an absolute bonus for us if we can land him. Great kick of the footy and a good competitor.

Surely you are taking the pi55?

Wrecker was better and if not for injuries would have been a gun defender of the comp.

When Jetta smashes Hird I'll allow that statement to stand.

Agree to disagree. Wheels was a solid foot soldier who was great to watch for his toughness, but with the exception of the last weeks, Jetts has hardly lost a one-on-one for over a season. Wrecker never went on a streak like that. But as I say, each to their own.

I think you forget how good Matty Whelan was.  I think Gorgoroth is selling Jetta short a little, but Wrecker was sensational in both his drive off half back and his ability to win the one on one contest.  He was a super player.

Matty Whelan was a wonderful player and one of my all time favourites. He had a sense of the pressure around him and was terrific at turning defence into attack. And he was tough.

He's a very good player and shouldn't cost more than our second round pick, if we have to trade at all.

Don't think we have to trade as he is a defacto free agent (if I understand things correctly).

It would only be fair if they lost a few players to us for nought.

The AFL may have already factored in compensation for this by allowing them to get the first or second pick in this year's draft when they really should have had their first pick at least deferred to the end of the first round or taken away altogether. They obviously aren't a genuine bottom team they are only there for one year because of their transgressions.

I couldn't believe On the Couch the other week discussed what they might do with their first pick instead of discussing how it is that they will have the first pick at all. Other than KB the whole AFL Community and media have been very very quiet about this.

Maybe Brock McLean should be asked for his opinion? ;-)

And he gave Golden Boy what he now deserves.

Tom Browne just said that Essendon are getting very frustrated with the demons who are aggressively chasing both Hibberd and Hurley...

Giddy up Dee supporters!

Awesome.

Almost as awesome as having another thread about the two of these players.

Hurley...Yes..then we can move T Mac to CHF.......!!

I get the feeling any chance to get Hurley would result in trading out T-Mac for an early first rounder, to get us back into the first round of a very promising draft.

Can't we trade Dawes instead?

Ho hum

And who is this Tom Browne person anyway - I thought that he was some long deceased American revolutionary.

Yep, I get this feeling too. If, and it's a big if, we could talk Hurley in to coming over, the club may let T Mac go for a first rounder to free up the necessary salary cap room.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
