Like Goldstein you mean and Jacobs, you will find most top ruckmen want to ruck most of the game with a max of 5 or 10 minute breather in total

All they have to do is compete, there are not many teams at the moment who have the luxury of two top ruckmen, and I mean top, most have one and a serviceable back up

King 1 is still developing, King 2 will be rebuilt, Spencer, if Gawn goes down, hopefully not, will at least compete, that is all you can ask

Sometimes I reckon you think the AFL is like unders' footy and it's weird.

These blokes get paid for their ability.

It's more than evident that our Ruck stocks are extremely weak and that we can do a lot better than what we currently have in regards to upgraded talent.

Your view of what is required to win a Grand Final within an elite competition is borderline crazy.

List changes will continue. Spencer is another whose place on the list is not in jeopardy only because we have nobody else at the present time. But I'm sure that'll be addressed in the not too distant future.

You said the same shite when McKenzie, Bail, Nicholson etc were running around in our best 22 and judging by what you continue to say, you'd still have them on the list because 'they compete'.

Good OP though.

Mine are as follows:

1 : A more settled back-line. Clearly we're shuffling cards which is not ideal during the H&A season. I doubt any of the coaches thought Garland would be dropped two games into the season nor would they think this zone-defence would cause as many issues as it has. Not only that, it's an area in which our worst runners are almost all situated. Jetta, Dunn, Salem, Garland and Wagner. They all need to be a helluva lot fitter. Especially those who play HB. We are low on quality KP backmen and we have a host of players vying for a HB position. Clearly it's the most unsettled area of the ground. I still think we need one experienced HB flanker who can kick really well and is a really hard runner. And we need Hurley. I want him.

2: Outside run in through the middle of the ground. Look at any top side and they have really hard line breaking outside players who we just don't have. Very one-dimensional midfield in terms of pace which is why it's no surprise the same names slice us to pieces when we come up against them. Steven, Harvey, Christensen, Kelly, Scully, Hill etc etc.

3: Ruck backup/Forward Ruckman. Clearly if Gawn goes down, we are in big trouble.

Tremendous ruckmen who have great support in Ben Brown and Josh Jenkins.  We've got Pedo up against them, it's not good enough.  A tight game game can swing in that 5 to 10 minute period - think Preliminary Final.

ANB, Trengove and Vince can all play back. I think ANB can be effective back or forward, but I was impressed with his SANFL highlights down back. He might be slow - but he makes the right plays. ANB has a sharp brain, and that is what we need down back - someone who can delegate. We don't have a general down back. Salem isn't the answer, he is a player with a lot of potential (and I think a future inside mid), but he isn't a intuitive player, he is an instinctual player IMO - a ball chaser, tackler, best left to his own devices. ANB will be better down back. He should be first point of call, looking to get the ball in the hands of Trengove, Vince, Watts, Jetta, or Salem. When I think of ANB, I think Shane Briggs from the WB. He is underrated, and sets up a lot of their play (at least he did until last week).

Agree with the OP about Oliver, he is something else. His inside work is comparable to a Josh Kennedy - who I rate as the best inside worker in the league (just down on form a little atm). I think Oliver has more upside, is more explosive, and potentially more dominant.

My point Ben Brown and Josh Jenkins may spend 10 minutes max, Roos obviously thinks Pedo is good enough coz he keeps picking him, Pedo provides a contest in the ruck, that's all you want from a backup

In your opinion, I don't share that opinion,, the Footy Dept will decide if we are in a weak position regarding the rucks, what we think on there, doesn't mean squat, I fully expected McKenzie and Bail to be delisted at years end, but when they were picked they gave it their best, you support the team at the time, that is what a supporter does, only difference between me and some other supporters, I don't feel the need to denigrate players or coaches or whingeing about anything and everything all the time

A little example for you, I was invited to be part of a Focus Group looking at something for the Club, first question was about Melbourne supporters, I said they were the biggest whingers I had ever come across, of course I got howled down by some, for the next hour the howlers did nothing but whinge and complain and offer nothing constructive....bit like Demonland

I don't think it's because he thinks he's good enough it's just he's the best option we have. The cupboard is bare at the moment....

Totally flawed logic.  By your reasoning every player playing a role must be "good enough", therefore if we don't have anyone "good enough" we'll run out with 21.  Roos picks Pedo because he's the best option he has, or perhaps the least worst.   Ro Bail played a lot of footy under Roos too because he was the best option for the role at the time.  It's not a slight on Pedo or Ro who give their all, they are just not flag material in those roles, i.e. not "good enough".

THIS ^^^^

In a nutshell we are a 2nd Back, a 2nd Fwd and about 2-3  mids short of a highly competitive team.  Some we already possibly have on our list  but arent developed yet. Others will be hunted down at seasons end ( well ...hunted now...got  late ..lol )

Why is Pedo the least worst   I would put him on par with Ceglar for the role he plays

What we think doesn't matter, the Footy Dept sorts it out      I already have an inkling of who will be delisted at the end of the yeat   whether the FD agrees who knows

Every player who runs out to play an AFL game must be a good player because they have got past the couldabeens and got on a list

Every year Demonland goes through this  we have turned over list on a massive scale for the last couple of years let's give it this year to see if changes have worked

You side swipe Satyr all the time

Don't be all strawberries and cream. Soon as anyone disagrees with your observation you get stuck right in.

Just because you apologize to the mods while doing it makes no difference.

Is that a side swipe? Perhaps it's an addiction.

We need skill out of the backline.

We need skill on the outside of contests.

We need a decent second ruck who is predominantly our 2nd tall forward.

agree with that

also....need more height/big/kp players.......may get from existing youngsters but takes time.... inject an experienced kpp (or 2)

No it was a slight bit of sarcasm, love when a player gets written off, as I wrote, he is playing his role, whether he keeps that role is up to the Footy Dept.

I still think we look very vulnerable against huge forwards. If that big galoot had been able to kick straight (whoever he was) we would have been in trouble and Lynch caused trouble also.

One weakness I've noticed this year since the NAB games is the opposition's ability to come out of their backline going wide around the wing then penetrate into their forward line without any resistance from Melbourne. Some examples of this would be the first half of yesterday, both times we played the Saints and the GWS game.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
