Had a look for an hour between 10:30-11:30.

No: Dawes, Mitch King, Spencer, Viney from what I saw.

Vanders walked off just as I got there. Newton came out to do boxing with Jetta. Giving the pads a serious work out.

Rehab: Kent doing sprints. Salem on light duties. Weideman as well. Matt Jones and Garland on light duties.

Almost everyone else was doing everything including Dunn, Lumumba and Brayshaw.

Clarry came off after one drill and had a tight right hip. Physios got in to him pretty strongly. Then he did some boxing. Hopefully just some tightness that is all fine and a week off will have him feeling better before round 1.

Usual drills all about quick ball movement. McCartney barking out orders when mids were going 5 v 3 from a stoppage and kicking to a 4 v 2 forward line. Dunn and Hunt managed to intercept a few and Macca was cracking that the forwards would trip over their pulled down pants. The attacking players then started to work it out. A definite focus on the player forward of the stoppage to run forward  away from the stoppage as soon as the ball is won and then make his defender choose whether to run with him or attack the ball carrier. Similarly the focus for the outnumbered defenders was to go hard at the ball carrier to force a mistake.

Hogan, Dunn, Frost, Gawn and Pedersen all did contested marking practice.

Harmes, JKH, Garlett and Max King all were practising snapping goals.

Hogan had plenty of shots at goal during various drills. Throws in one or two shuffle steps but otherwise very fluent run up and kicking wasn't an issue.

On Hogan   leaving training with Harmes and Frost complimented him on working hard despite having a bad day, Frost added the forwards want to create goals by their pressure, Hoges laughed when I told him he was caught on the big screen counting his fingers     also he launched a torpedo during training from just outside the centre square   went thru about half way up   must read some press

Cheers guys.

Saty, with M. Jones do you think he will play some at Casey this week if cleared of concussion?

From what we now know about concussion I would think the answer is No.

Everyone knows what Jones can give so why risk him in a practise match?

I agree    think they will just monitor him for symptoms     mo need to play him

Because I don't know. Well I thought I did but I was starting to reassess with his form. Now the coaches have a smaller sample size to decide if he's improved or not.

If Vanders isn't right and they have doubts over Frost, plus maybe they don't want to play Harmes or Brayshaw on a wing then there's a spot for him.

I wouldn't play him at this weekend at all. But he's still in contention for round 1 and I really would've liked to have seen 4 quarters of him against the Saints.

Normally I'd agree, but if it wasn't a concussion but just a head knock but they didn't risk it as it was NAB3, I thought I'd ask ?

Sounds like what I do on the dunny upon waking up after a big night

Don't think Dunny would like that.

You're gonna get a jumper punch.  :o

Reckon Newton might be in trouble at the end of 2016. He's a distinctly different midfield prospect to the rest of our young midfield. He's not hard at it. His contested work is average, he can hurt on the scoreboard, but he doesn't get involved enough.

It'll be interesting to see how he goes this year. If he starts to attack the contest like Kennedy and Bugg and manages to get involved more we'll have 'good' selection problems. I don't see it though.

Gee, you're a bit tough on him Adam......Kicked three goals in his last match.....I think he is in the mix along with ABN and Streach but I think he is a bit tougher than them.

just my opinion.   At the moment.

Stretch offers pace and I'd say he's just as tough if not tougher than Newton. ANB has them both on that though. It'll be an interesting year for ANB too. Newton's a bit older than them both and has been in the system a little longer and I'd be expecting a bit more from him.

I'm not sure that Newton isn't hard at - it's his tank that has been the problem. He is handy around goal so if he can develop that he might get some games.

I've heard that the major knock on him is his defensive work. But I also can't recall a real hard ball he won last year and I was probably at 17 H&A matches last season.

It will be interesting to follow his form at Casey.

I got there early and was over near the rehab group with Dawes and Van the Man doing some light kicking and Van doing sprints and Dawes sent off to do laps on the scooter, both looked to be moving Ok. Kent at one stage was talking to the assistant about a groin problem and lack of power on one side. Weiderman and Salem were doing some kicking drills and Weiderman looked to moving OK but Salem looks to me like he has a break on his right hand ring finger, it was heavily bandaged and at no stage of the drills did he try to mark a ball, he was working with Cross who took all the marks and would then handball to Salem to kick. And Salem took every handball receive with his left hand. Garland didn't look well at all but as you say if he had a corky that would explain his inability to do any running without looking very pained.

He always has his hands strapped, not sure what the issue is, had no bandaging on his hands when we were discussing Arsenal's ignominious exit from the FA Cup and Everton's triumph, just said he was having a light day, think both he and Kent are still being developed so they deload them now and again

Christian Salem had a scan yesterday, finger heavily taped today. He favoured at training, not in main group. But Dees adamant he plays R1.  Tweet from Stevo.

I hope he is ok and behind his injuries. Need him out there.

So Earl noticed there was something wrong with his hand, he's had scans and wasn't in the main group, but because he didn't tell you about it there's no problem?

If you look at any pictures of Salem playing, he always has his hands strapped, I asked him if there was any issue, said no, so I believed him, perhaps the hand was a bit sore, so they scanned it, but he regards it as no issue

Don't open this can of worms. You'll be like Alice falling down the rabbit hole.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
