This is a discussion forum and we are discussing Goodwin.  I'm interested in their views and how they reconcile there position.  I don't think that's negative actually, I think it's interesting.  Or at least it's interesting to me.  But TBH I doubt I'll hear a lot from them.

- Many DL posters are pleased players found guilty of drug use are out of the game for a year, regardless who they play for.  A victory for clean sport.

- Many DL posters are unhappy with the AFL's kid gloves handling of EFC in the aftermath of the CAS decision.  Its like rewarding cheats.

- Very, very few DL posters are critical of the mfc decision to hire Goodwin. 

Those positions are not mutually exclusive.  Nothing to reconcile.

If is interesting to you there are other threads where you can read the discussion about Goodwin and EFC saga. Post your issues over there.

Therefore, I'm signing out of the EFC/Godwin discussion on this thread.

And not all who were pointing the finger of guilt at the Bombers treated the Essendon stuff in the same way - a number here treated it (and still do) in too much of a narrow way ... it became like Melb vs Ess for too many ... The broader picture is horrific and that's where the focus should lie (with regards to PED use)

The AFL were always going to go into repair mode with the Bombers and it can't be any fun missing a whole year of footy and to be forever labeled as a drug cheat (and that's how many will view the 34)

i'd also add, macca that a lot of the hate for essendon is aimed at their attitude nd the way they have handled the issue and dragged it out as long possible. this whole issue could have been resolved 2 seasons ago if egos and arrogance hadn't got in the way. it's not just about the peds.

I got the sense watching Goodwin's interview that he was suppressing a smile and bemused at the lack of questions, ease of the "post-match" interview... 

we had to hire the best available successor for Roosy an i believe that was Goodwin, he could easily have been a senior coach elsewhere at this point, clearly extremely highly rated within the industry and i think he will add a very good attacking side to our game.

Agree with that 'dc' but I'm more than just a footy fan - I'm a sports fan so I'm therefore going to take a broader view.

The worldwide PED issue is infinitely bigger than what went on at Essendon ... in fact, I believe that what went on at Essendon can be attributed to how things are worldwide - a flow-on effect per se.

The Essendon/Goodwin saga is completely irrelevant now. He got clear, we move on now.

Id rather talk about Goodwin the MFC coach from next year onwards.

It was very heartening to read the other day that Hogan has a very healthy relationship with Goodwin. Just show the impressive people skills and relationships he has with the players.

That as MFC coach he is following and maintaining the high standards that were outlined during his recruitment..

If he is smart he will say absolutely nothing about the EFC situation...he and more so we don't need to be drawn into this one.

We are all drawn into it unfortunately. Its drugs in sport. Essendon havent gotten out of it  and want until they admit the truth

I think you've answered your question yourself Bob. Goodwin's position including some vague unsubstantiated rumours involving a supplement that's not illegal if you're not a participant were investigated as part of the AFL and ASADA investigations, Ziggy Switkowski's internal review and the Board, Peter Jackson and Paul Roos carried out their due diligence - all before he was appointed as the coach in waiting. He doesn't appear to have been involved in anti-doping rule violations.

That's something entirely different to those of us who want to see breaches of the WADA Code at Essendon sanctioned, whether they be the appropriate penalties being meted out to the players or clubs, officials and staff involved in setting up and maintaining the programme. There's never been any evidence implicating Goodwin in any of those things.

Lock in pressure goals, and retarding the opposition from opening and initiating breaks from their half back line... Vanders, Kennedy, Garlett, Kent and Pedo all applied heaps of pressure in our forward half.

BB as an Essendon hater myself, I'm happy to say that if Goodwin was involved with drugging his team, then I will happily see him go regardless of the effect on our club.  I expect most of the anti-Hird/EFC people you attempt to criticise have the same view, but it irks you that they don't call for Goodwin's head on a daily basis. And why should they - the issues that they comment on are the events as they (endlessly) unfold - all to deal with legal actions etc involving people whose name is not Goodwin.

Unlike you, I think EFC were as guilty as hell and compounded that by their subsequent actions bringing disgrace on our game. They should have put their hands up like the rugby club did and this would all have been over years ago.  No Essendon-lovers can ever again shake their head and tut-tut when the Russian water polo team or the Chinese hockey team etc is called out for drug cheating.

The comments here about Goodwin and Essendrug are tedious.

I'm bloody glad we have him. Reckon he could be the next Clarkson.

 

If anyone is interested had a chat to Goodwin at family day, was disappointef with first quarter and a bit, mixture of nerves, rust and not playing ypour role, still stuck to competing though. Once coaches settled them down was pleased how team stuck .to gamecplan/style, still a bit of work to do, said everybody contributed and played their role.

I don't see why they are tedious - it is a significant issue and one hopefully where we have dodged any bad outcome.  I'm also glad we have him as things stand.

Hes a Demon now.  Embrace him and let us rejoice in the attacking yet accountable game plan he will will bring.  The MFC will once again be an exciting, exhilarating team, like we were in the late 90s early 2000's.

A certainty no doubt isGoody does know the error of his ways and has sought to move on. Afaik heHAS admitted his sins as they were and humbly moved on. I counterpoint here with others. 

There are those that pander a  point. Some are paid players , some are 'conversation staryers' dressed up up as intelligence.

It irks me no little bit(npi)thatGoody has 'I fcuked in the past' 

It's where you go after that matters.

Thanks CB, but to be honest I didn't notice Hogan chasing and pressuring the opposition as much as those I mentioned. not saying Hogan wasn't doing it as well, just noticed the other getting results from their defensive pressure acts...

I knew what you were saying and Watts, M. Jones and Oliver were also applying pressure further up the ground. The other 17 teams will have a different Melbourne to contend with over the next few years!

In an article: We'll be respectful of situation on MFC 'mobile' website it discussed the Roos/Goodwin changeover. (Can't find the article on club 'desktop' website)

Roos said:  "Mahoney and I discussed it (Goodwin staying in current senior coach position) with Goodwin last week and he's really comfortable with the role...and he is really looking forward to the next week and getting as much out of it".  That seems different to the Roos/Longmire handover where he left the box to Longmire and retreated to the bench.

Interpret that as you will:  Protecting Goodwin from media if we don't win many more games?  Not quite ready?  Roos just loves coaching?  I think the first.

While many on DL and media have speculated on Goodwin's influence it seems to me Roos has been firmly in control especially after the St kilda and Port games.

I am very happy to see Roos coach from the box for the rest of the year.  Maybe if we win a few more games he might give the box to Goodwin for the last few games.  I will be very sad to see Roos go.

Update on Roos plans.

In a 3AW interiview, Roos has said:

- he and Tammy will start a Leadership and Wellness company

- thinks Simon will be a fantastic coach

- looking forward to the Dees doing well and will be a Dees fan after he leaves

- he and PJ have had chats about next year but decided to focus on the next 8 weeks

- would enjoy coaching our women's team.

- his prior role at Sydney Academy was discussed (...we have a Multicultural Academy waiting to be developed)

- doesn't see him self going to another club - you become wedded to a club eg watching players like Watts and Jones develop

Would love to see Roos still be involved with the club, somehow.
