Josh Mahoney's summary: http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2015-10-22/we-achieved-trade-targets-mahoney

Interesting that he says we could have 8-10 potential A-graders after this draft.

Even if half of those turn into A-graders it will be super awesome.

Well assumedly he is including pick 3 and 7

so the other 6-8 must be

hogan, brayshaw, viney, tommymac, salem, petracca and tyson ??? maybe watts or vanders?

i thought we all agreed to not believe anything mahoney said (at least during trade/draft time)

B for me. Next year's draft is supposed to be a bumper crop, and our list tells us we are a bottom 10 club so our first rounder has some currency attached to it.

Aside from that the Demons trading was aggressive, well targeted and thought out. Howe and Toumpas are replaceable, regardless of their talent.

They say that every year.

Gawn

Gawn

Agreed on Gawn. Hes already in the top handful of ruckmen in the AFL on ability, now he needs to stay on the park and he will certainly be an A grader.

bit early for mine, but I can certainly see the argument. Tell you what though, he better be. What else do we have coming through in the giant department, Spencer, who hasn't got it, and that's it.

2012 draft: Viney and Hogan

2013 draft: Tyson and Salem

2014 draft: Brayshaw and Petracca

2015 draft: Parish and Weideman

Those are our potential A-graders. Others would include: Vandenberg, McDonald, Gawn and Kent imo.

Someone on our recruiting panel decided not to pursue Jake Carlisle

he knows who he is

Give that man a Gold Star and renew his contract

Yeah, but that same man was also the one who lined up to get pumped full of god knows what remember

Afl.com rated our trade efforts as A+

I particularly liked these two lines from Nathan Schmook (in his verdict):

"...The Demons used the incoming points to perfection to gain picks 3 and 7...They read the play quicker than other clubs."

An important element in this play was getting the melk. Some on dl think we paid covers and some said we went to early and should have waited to drive the price up.

But getting it done early was critical as it didn't hold up other trades and indeed it gave ESS some currency to get their trades moving. In the end it mattered little if we gave up 25 or 29.

Also we needed to ensure if we were going to angle for high draft picks that we got a player with approx the same number of games and age as howe lest we unbalance the list. In an ideal world we would also get a player who could slot into the back line to replace howe. And we wanted a tough, hard running competitor. Given all that clearly it was not overs after all. The melk perfectly fitted the bill and as required we got it done early and without fuss. Well played

A+ for mine

I was going to change my rating from B to A but stopped myself why?

Couldn't have gone better,

Yes it could, we could have landed an A grader, we could have moved out more dead wood. so B it is. And a very good B well done JM and team.

the validity of who actually is picked this year aside it just goes to show how vast a difference is had when you have people who actually KNOW wtf they are doing !!

I think we take a KPF at #3 considering I think Weideman will defiantly be gone by 7

We have the best CHF of this generation - we do not have a 'need' to take a tall forward at 3.

We've taken a huge risk giving up our first round pick next year in what will be a high quality draft. We'll either look smart or silly.

It seems we have a good rapport with GC and GWS. We could always trade picks for a first rounder.

Is he obstinate?

I particularly like the name Nathan Schmook

6. There might be light at the end of the tunnel for the Dees
By Melbourne's reckoning, this might be the last year it finishes far closer to the bottom of the ladder than the top. The Demons also understand that they're perhaps one more year away from being seen as a destination club. So why not make the most of their 'predicament' and position themselves for one more run at the draft? Some deft dealing by the Demons means they ended up with picks three and seven in the forthcoming national draft, and while the draft might not be the strongest, those two picks should yield long-term players for Melbourne. Add Jake Melksham, Ben Kennedy and Tom Bugg joining the club and the debut next season of 2014 No.2 pick Christian Petracca, and Melbourne can look forward to a healthy talent injection. After years of mismanagement, the playing list finally has the right feel and demographics.

You are right that we may be giving up something next year but to me the biggest positive argument is you get a year of football into 2 top draft picks this year. What ever good football you get out of a first year draftee to me is bonus - for example - Brayshaw - good in the first half - output fell away in the second - get a full preseason into him and he will produce good football from day one for hopefully the whole of year two. We have brought forward at least one top pick into this year which hopefully will accelerate our rise. We don't have the luxury of waiting.
