NATIONAL DRAFT PICKS 3 & 7

Who's this Hipwood chap at 6? Another nsw academy kid?

So 3 and 7 in reality is pick 7 and 11. Going by Emma Q.

These academies are getting out of hand! Seems completely unfair that Sydney would keep getting top 5 picks when have won two flags in last 10 years and are generally in the top 4.

They are going to need to these quality kids. They stuffed up big time on the Franklin deal, and that will come back to hurt them at some point.

Would Ryan Burton be a reach a pick 7? I guess the major issue is how his leg has recovered, but before that it seems he would have been top 5. I also like that he has a bit of strut about him and would complement Jesse well.

There's a 2 part story on Ryan on the AFL website which includes some highlights and Ryan talking about the injury and recovery:

Part 1 - http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-11-04/going-places-the-moment-that-could-have-ended-ryan-burtons-afl-dream

Part 2 - http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-11-05/going-places-20-months-without-footy-but-burton-might-still-go-top20

He does sound like an interesting prospect, but I don't think that we'll take a punt on him with either of our first 2 picks due to his injury.

Would Port be able to tell if we drafted this Ollie and secretly swapped him with their Ollie in the middle of the night?

I'm not sure if that would make olisik (coincidentally he's made me Ollie sick) happy or sad.

Hipwood will be a Lion.

And don't get angry if you don't understand; the Northern Clubs will now be playing under the paradigm that if they have one or two excellent or very good academy players they will only be able to draft them and have picks in the 60s and 70s to fill their list.

It is really the best scenario - they get local kids to grow the game in their area and the game doesn't allow them to continue to profit to the degree they did.

I think people misunderstand the academies a bit, the players are rated so highly because they have been through that program, they're talented players, not necessarily as talented as what this draft position may reflect, but they've been under intense AFL training programs with development coaches, it's like if we got Parish at the end of last year and gave him a year under Roos and McCartney, i guarantee he'd be rated as the number 1 or 2 pick now

It's a huge advantage, we got to use it on Hogan and Viney

the best scenario? how about no academies and everyone on a level playing field?

im tired of the extra assistance the northern clubs get, especially when they have been dominant, successful in recent times (eg brisbane, sydney). and i get the new system but gun players are rare (~number 1 draft picks) the difference between pick 35 and 55 compared with picking up one of the 2-3 gun players of the year is significant

In the herald sun today (sorry if already posted), Sam Landsberger runs his eye over Champion data rankings and has assessed when the players may be selected in the top 30 (i have summarised key info for the top 15 and any other name ive heard us linked to - if you cant access it and want what they say about someone else listed let me know and ill edit it):

  1. Jacob Hopper (no.1 @ championships for contested footy, clearances and 3rd for meters gained)
  2. Callum Mills (ave. 30 disposals, 12 contested, 5 I50's & 4 clearances in NEAFL as a bottom age player in 2014)
  3. Josh Shache (24 goals greatest ever at champs)
  4. Jacob Weitering (9 intercept possessions and 4 intercept marks a game in TAC cup - unheard of at AFL level)
  5. Darcy Parish (elite for meters gained & above average for contested/uncontested possessions)
  6. Aaron Francis (ave 5 intercept marks - No1 & appears suited to defence)
  7. Ben Keays (ball magnet ranked No.2 for disposals at national champs with pinpoint kicking)
  8. Ryan Burton (if didn't miss 2015 could've been a top 3 pick, Ave 3 goals & 105 super coach points as a bottom age player for south Aus in 2014)
  9. Mathew Kennedy (TAC cup numbers is an elite midfielder who hits the scoreboard > 1 goal a game).
  10. Eric Hipwood (No1 ranked key defender at the championships, leading disposals and meters gained)
  11. Charlie Curnow (rated elite for contested marks in the TAC cup & kicked more than 2 goals a game)
  12. Rhys Mathieson (the best inside midfielder, winning an elite 10 cont possessions & 5 clearances for vic country - ranked no1 in div 1)
  13. Jade Gresham (attacking mid rated elite for disposals, meters gained, clearances, goals and score involvements)
  14. Sam Weideman (Small TAC cup sample showed he can win the ball in the air and at ground level, ave the second most ground ball gets inside 50)
  15. Kieran Lovell (No1 ranked player of the championships, leading disposals, meters gained and uncontested possessions)
  16. Mitch Hibberd
  17. Ryan Clarke
  18. Clayton Oliver (ave 14 contested possessions, 6 clearances, 6 tackles and a goal in teh TAC cup)
  19. Riley Bonner
  20. Harley Balic
  21. Wayne Milera
  22. Ben Crocker
  23. Luke Partington
  24. Callum Ah Chee
  25. Darcy Tucker (rated above ave for intercept possessions and meters gained - looks suited to defence)
  26. Daniel Rioli
  27. Bailey Rice
  28. Brayden Fiorini
  29. Kieren Collins
  30. Josh Dunkley

Also they state (in regards to tall forwards): "A recent Champion data case study showed star spearheads franked their junior form. Tom Hawkins, Taylor Walker, Jack Darling, and Jack Riewalt all averaging 100 supercoach points and 14 disposals before they were drafted. Schache joins that group".

Cheers

Id still be happy with Parish and Mathieson

From there on youd only be topping up and refining the midfield and future Trading /Drafting can look at other needs etc.

We've often talked about 'best available....now it seems many want to go to 'needs" only..

I would have though the best avail approach would be to gather mids with these picks then.

Who are the Roos type players in the mix?

Given we have not done well with the lighter frame types and Roos preferences I would not be surprised if we picked Curnow before Parish and my smokey for our second pick would be Kieren Collins who looks to be a bit like Roos did as a player.

I of course have no idea and this is based on watching a couple of videos. I reserve the right to proclaim our picks as inspired and or lament our failure to pick Ollie.

Yes, the best scenario - they want to showcase the local kids that come through their system to attract locals to watch and attend and get involved in junior footy to start that process all over again. It is a necessity in these growing markets.

And they are paying a price for these talents that is finally commensurate with the price any other club would pay.

Sydney will get Mills, maybe Dunkley if he nominates them (not a fait accompli apparently, he has 4 days to decide) and fill their list with picks past our 4th pick in the 60s...

I don't see a fairer scenario really - they are given an albeit arbitrary value and they must pay that value or relinquish rights to the player.

And if three Judds come out of the Harbour next year - they will have to trade away a few players to fit those kids into the team or lose one.

Brett Anderson's final draft rankings. Not a mock but his personal rankings. The numbers in brackets are where he ranked them earlier in the year.

http://www.sen.com.au/news/11-15/bretts-final-2015-afl-draft-big-board#ymeCut7dJxCF22VH.97

5. Charlie CURNOW (7)

3/2/97 | 191cm | 95kg | Utility | Geelong Falcons
The 'could be anything' of this draft. Can play as a strong marking key forward – he’s the same height as Jack Darling – or as a big midfielder. When in midfield, he has similar attributes and athleticism as Jarryd Roughead when the Hawks throw him into the middle. Most clubs spoken to feel he is a no-brainer at pick three, but who knows the Dees will do!

9. Darcy PARISH (5)

25/7/97 | 180cm | 74kg | Midfielder | Geelong Falcons
Some will be surprised by Parish falling behind Gresham but I’m not the only one to have them ranked this way. Parish is a classy ball user who has plenty of grunt. If there is a knock, I would like him to tackle a bit more but his record over the past two years is extremely impressive.

11. Clayton OLIVER (25)

22/7/97 | 187cm | 86kg | Midfielder | Murray Bushrangers
A look back at his vision from early in the season should glimpses of what we began to see on a regular basis in the back half of the season. He sees things unfold quicker than most others and uses the ball very well by hand and foot. He is also very strong overhead and shows great courage when backing back with the flight of the ball.

14. Sam WEIDEMAN (13)

26/6/97 | 196cm | 94kg | Forward | Eastern Ranges
Courageous and strong in the air and could well wind up in the top 5 or 6 on draft night. He has a few more strings to his bow than just being a ‘mark and kick’ key forward as he has played back at times in recent years. From all reports his medical should come back fine despite some concerns.

I dont see it as a necessity to have academies. Sure it would be great to have local lads playing for your team, but its a national comp. I reckon the QLDer's didnt mind cheering on Jonathon Brown

I think the fairest option is to scrap the academies and give each team a crack at the years best talent

Francis. I think we'll take him at 3. Pick 7 is the more interesting one. But I think a tall will slide, GC have no use for another tall - and probably a somewhat speculative one. They have Lynch, Day and Wright, So I think we will be in a position to consider Curnow/Weiderman, or take a midfielder in Oliver/Milera (I don't think Parish will make it to 7). Pretty good position to be in, but I can't see us overlooking Francis at 3, he is a Roos type player, and he ticks all the boxes, eventually he will push into midfield and be strong, powerful type (like Dangerfield).

you don't need to scrap the academies. they are vital in developing a new market in rugby (league and union) territory

you could just make them run and financed by the afl, then available to all

I'd use it as an equalization measure, so if there are four academy players, they're essentially mini draft picks that the bottom four sides can trade, or take if they choose, good way to get the bottom sides to rise quickly

Shame we couldn't get our hands on Jacob Weitering, article in todays HeraldSun and TheAge last week tell of a very impressive kid with a good head on his shoulders. Spewing Carlton get their hands on him.

And to think he is a Dees supporter (for what it's worth, the majority of players once drafted do not give a hoot to who they followed as a kid.)

why would you want sydney to rise? they are doing quite well.

the normal draft has the equalisation measures that are available to all clubs if performing badly

without the academy bonus the northern clubs have the same pool of players available to everyone

i don't mind in principle gws and gcs getting assistance on a one-off basis (e.g. priority pick system) if it becomes necessary

brisbane and sydney have won 5 premierships in the last 14 years (and been in 8 grand finals).......punching well above their weight

    BLOODY BLUES by Meggs

The conclusion to Narrm’s home and away season was the inevitable let down by the bloody Blues  who meekly capitulated to the Bombers.   The 2024 season fixture handicapped the Demons chances from the get-go with Port Adelaide, Brisbane and Essendon advantaged with enough gimme games to ensure a tough road to the finals, especially after a slew of early season injuries to star players cost wins and percentage.     As we strode confidently through the gates of Prin
