No, that's an observation.

What's your point ?

The knock on Wines in the draft (on here and elsewhere) was always; no upside, no class, no polish and Toumpas was seen as best available ( If Roos had the final say I think the outcome would have been different). Toumpas was always a smooth mover, looked good, not stilted or mechanical at all. Sorry, I can be a bit obtuse, first and foremost, we no longer recruit players who are not competitive and they usually have second and third efforts. We also seem to now pick players who are well developed in the lower body. For these reasons it wouldn't surprise me if Oliver was picked up, he wont look classy but that's not a term I've heard applied to Viney, Capt Chunk or Brayshaw. I'm pretty sure Clarkson has stated he would want Viney's attitude in every player he ever coached. Oliver appears to have a similar way, certainly Wines does and although Parish doesn't really fit the "build" he appears to have the attitude also. I'm not saying we should take Oliver at 3 but if we did I can understand why.

Oliver is strong over the ball but can't or doesn't kick on his left.

When confronted and forced to use his left he will try and twist and turn out of traffic to get onto his right or get away a handball.

It worked fine for him in the TAC cup as he can monster over other teens but I question how well he can keep it up against men, and how at times it may slow down or impair a set play.

Dont think i have ever seen Ollie Wines kick on his opposite foot either.

And for a matter of fact i have seen Oliver use his left foot on several occasions to get himself out of trouble and its definitely not an awkward style at all in fact its pretty fluent. And thats why i pointed out the touch of class he has in him which many have said he doesn't have.

Watts, Scully, Toumpas, Parish

OR

Dangerfield, Martin, Wines, Oliver

You choose which type MFC should pursue.

McKenzie, Valenti, Stark, Oliver

OR

S Burgoyne, Rioli, Deledio, Parish.

Your comparision is ridiculous. Those rookie players never had class.

(shall I say Dangerfield, Martin, Wines,Oliver vs. Nicholson, Evans, Rhys Healy, Cam Johnston). Fu#$@$.

My point was bonafide top 10 picks. The silk or the competitor. That's the call. That's the point

McKenzie was a competitor.

So Parish 2 time AA v Oliver didn't play a game for Vic Country.

That's a big call..

Exactly. Oliver couldn't even get a game for Vic Country.

I don't get the love.

I don't get the love.

The Vic Country stuff is irrelevant. He clearly wasn't the same player when carrying a bit of weight, battling OP and building fitness in the first half of the year.

Look at these stats:

http://www.foxsportspulse.com/team_info.cgi?action=PSTATS&pID=197829314&client=1-118-10450-339768-20320221&ocompID=339768

Second half of the year he's hitting the scoreboard regularly, taking more marks, drastically increasing his kick to handball ratio.

And after his 2 game stint in the VFL he reels off 3 best on grounds and then two 2nd best on grounds to finish the season.

I'm not saying I know the answers on whether he's the right pick or not but the Vic Country stuff doesn't bother me at all.

Lots of scrubbers win a Morrish Medal.

This guy leaves me cold.

Parish being compared to players like Toumpas and even Aish, which hasn't been said on here is completely ridiculous due to his contested ball numbers.

Parish is probably the 3rd best mid in the draft and Oliver the 5th dependent on people's ratings, but that's how I have it.

That said, I think Oliver has chance to make a more immediate impact but Parish is a 2-3 year prospect before consistent AFL!!

Il take either of them though and even both ...

Ok then, better not forget Cotchin, Deledio, Macrae, Bartel, Heppell and Polec. All of which you could name next to Parish.

Then on the contradicting side there's Rich, Palmer, Ellis, X. Clarke, and Sylvia.

Comparing a U18 prospect in this manner is ridiculous, and the argument is very easy to twist.

Oliver looks good playing for Murray but I just think its bloody risky to pick a bloke in the top 3 who didnt get selected to play championships

Sound like a university saying it's to risky to take a kid who didn't go to a private school as they had hardship during the entry exam period

I've been told we are very interested in Oliver.

Not my preference, but will take it in my stride if he becomes a Dee.

We will get 2 of Oliver, Parish, Curnow and Weiderman. Essendon the other 2

Both will take one tall and one mid. So it may depend on the descepency between the 2 miss being bigger then the 2 talls.

He didn't get selected because of OP.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
