Adam Goodes Retires

Lucifers Hero

Recommended Posts

When I opened this thread I had high hopes that my team's supporters would show their intelligence. My faith has been rewarded. There's always the select few, but I hope there comes a day when we don't have to say that.

In a way I'm disappointed he didn't play against us down here again, because we might've shown we have the classiest supporters. Perhaps we might not have, we'll never know.

Goodesy, a champion on and off the field.

No fanfare, no fuss.

No sign or wave to the crowd.

He announced it to his teammates after the game.

A football career doesn't get much better than this:

Games: 372

Goals: 464, fourth on the goalkickers list for the club behind Bob Pratt, O'Loughlin and Barry Hall.

Premierships: 2 (2005, 2012)

Brownlow Medals: 2 (2003, 2006)

Career Brownlow votes: 162 including 30 best-afield performances (to end of 2014 season)

All-Australian: 4 (2003, 2006, 2009, 2011)

Sydney Swans co-captain: 2009-2012

* Goodes holds the VFL/AFL games record for the Sydney Swans, and has played more matches than any other indigenous player.

* Goodes also won the 1999 Rising Star Award, was named in the Indigenous Team of the Century and captained Australia in the International Rules Series.

From the beginning he has excelled.

Champion of the game.

Adam Goodes deserved to be carried off last night.

Best wishes Adam.

i feel so sad that he was misunderstood, in his stands on issues close to his heart... in a way he was betrayed by some who cannot look by the face value of things, based from trust on his character.

he is a giant of the AFL, for all the good reasons I can think of. yes, he has played the game just as others now & before, no less than Selwood, captaining the Catters now.

ADAM GOODES, you are a Champ. all respect to you.

His effort in the 2012 GF was incredible

Goodes had the perfect "Tank" for the Fwd line or the Back line

Personally i wish he had not been made Australian of the Year. I don't think any Sports Person should be that.

Scientists, Doctors or Fireman etc are the recipents of such awards.

Will be interesting to see what he does now

I am sure he is sweating on the MRP findings from last night

It was a pretty ordinary piece of play....

just curious wyl. who was the last fireman to be australian of the year?

He has though, despite his brilliance, often been an out and out [censored] on the field. Even in his last game, the way he lashed out at Scott (another [censored]) Thompson with his studs up was a terrible act and below his standing as a legend.

Agree.

Staged, did dirty things on field and got looked after by the tribunal which soured his career.

He was a jet in his day and should be remembered as that.

Out and out champion and one of the greats. Pick 47, single parent family with little dosh, moved around the country as a young boy to dual Brownlow medallist, indigenous leader and Australian of the year. And one of those blokes that was just watchable, be it good or not so good. You don't have to love him to recognise one of the nation's more remarkable stories. Wish him well.

No it's not. Without the Football Career the rest would not have followed

Rubbish. Without the football career he would have had even more time to devote to his other work, might have been Australian Of The Century then...

But that's beside the fact that you're trying to move the goal posts while you continue to (deliberately?) miss the basic point that the award was nothing to do with football, not even one bit.

But feel free to just ignore facts and keep booing, you're in good company there.

still want to know about the fireman

well you won't find one. I expect he was just listing his ideal recipients.

Goodes' citation does include his AFL career (like other sports players who have had the award), but it does also focus on his work for the indigenous community:

http://www.australianoftheyear.org.au/honour-roll/?view=fullView&year=2014&recipientID=1144

Did his being a famous sports star increase his chances of nomination? Yes of course - have a look at the full list going back to 1960 and you'll see he is not alone in that. But in recent times that is not sufficient to get the gong.

BB: I suppose you think Mick Dodson must also have been an AFL star to get his gong in 2009.....

Stuie..without the footy career etc....nobody would care

Reality

The work he did had nothing to do with footy. Do you think you have to be an AFL player to do work for indigenous matters?

Of course, that is beside the actual point which is HE DIDN'T WIN AOTY FOR FOOTBALL.

What a career. Saw him dominate on grand final day in 95 in the TAC. I drooled over the prospect of him playing at Melb.

I doubt his is the last we will hear of him.

Actually it was '97. He got drafted at the end of that year. Had an unbelievable game for Nth Ballarat who won the game. He was everywhere. I remember thinking whoever gets him is going to have a star on their hands and yet he only went for pick 47. Couldn't believe my luck that he ended up at Sydney so I got to watch him playing up here for his whole career.

You can argue all you like about why he was made AOTY but obviously he didn't get it for being a footballer, he got it for being a man who fought against racism. He wouldn't have got it without having the profile he gained by being one of the greatest AFL players in history but he also didn't get it for that he got it for his off field work. Why argue about it. Move on.

As far as I am concerned the booing of him this year has been the lowest point I have experienced following VFL/AFL over more than fifty years. It's a very sad reflection and indictment on our society. That it grew to the level it did and even continued last night just makes me sad. At least the most divisive PM in Australian history is gone, let's hope things are looking up.

Roll on our Grand Final....... Trade Week!

BB, of course he was convenient. Doesn't lessen his achievements or his getting the award.

I'm being the reverse of naive. If you were on the Oz of the Year selection committee I expect you'd chose a candidate who are already known in the community rather than someone who has done similar things but is unknown to the public. That's the sort of things these Committees take into account to maximise the perception of their awards, rather than having it buried on page 33.

Let it go Stuie-while you still have zero credibility.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los
