MFC player 1 year contract valuations

So to add a bit more "reality" into it.

I've actually added in the mandatory payments for 2nd year, 1st year and rookie listed players.

And I've taken into account the incentive of match payments. if a player plays every game for a year, they get an extra $77,000

For that reason, for simplistic sake, I've treated it like "100K" deducted.

On what I would pay/what I think they're on, I've listed it out below.

N.Jones 600000 B.Vince 600000 J.Hogan 400000 T.Mcdonald 350000 L.Dunn 350000 J.Viney 350000 D.Tyson 350000 D.Cross 200000 N.Jetta 200000 J.Garlett 300000 H.Lumumba 300000 A.Brayshaw 71515 A.Vandenberg 55440 C.Dawes 400000 C.Garland 300000 J.Watts 400000 J.Howe 200000 J.Grimes 400000 C.Pederson 200000 D.Kent 150000 C.Salem 72970 J.Kennedy-Harris 62695 S.Frost 80815 M.Gawn 100000 J.Spencer 100000 M.Jamar 200000 M.Jones 80815 C.Petracca 71515 R.Bail 80815 J.Toumpas 100000 J.Trengove 100000 B.Newton 80815 B.Stretch 61610 A.Neal-Bullen 65000 A.Riley 80815 V.Michie 80815 J.Mckenzie 80815 J.Fitzpatrick 80815 D.Terlich 80815 J.Hunt 62695 M.King 55440 M.White 55440 O.Mcdonald 61610 J.Harmes 55440

Salary Cap: $9,921000

Total payments: $8,128,705

Match payments: $1,694,000 (assume 22 players x 22 games x $3500)

Remaining: $98,295

Salary cap in 2016 will be $10.36 million

Interested to see what people think some of the players under 20 games would be offered like Hogan and Vandenberg.

Joe Gutnick has reported this post.

This grief could be avoided by just giving players a mark out of 10 for the year.

Eg Hogan = 10, Brayshaw = 10 Vince = 10

Then we don't have to knicker twist over salary caps or whatever tf this is.

Its good to see it all layed out im interested to see how Sydney affords to keep all its good players, or a team like Adelaide who possibly without Dangerfield and Tippet will seemingly have quite a bit of room to draft some players if high value..

Cross by his valuation still has at least 1 good year left in him as he is clearly in our top 10 players...

You're assuming the AFL doesn't impose a "mark out of 10 cap" to avoid clubs rating everyone too highly.

Presumably some clubs would keep a separate list for those players who score more than 10 out of 10.

Garlett is our leading goal kicker, he is worth more than that.

He is worth more than that but it would be interesting to see what he actually is getting.

Wasn't exactly flying at Carlton on or off the field when he came across.

He's worth every penny he's getting here anyway

Posted

Colin Garland earning 100K less than a rookie-listed player who's played 10 career games?

While this doesnt have draftees/trades factored in, it shows what a complicated web of numbers

managing an AFL list has become, given you can also back/front end contracts, veterans and rookie

lists, restricted/unrestricted free agency statuses. Not to mention match payments as mentioned, inury

payments, incentive based bonuses etc etc...

Hogan easily $900,000

No chance, don't let the ridiculous Boyd deal skew your perceptions on players' worth.

Hawkins, both Riewoldts, Kennedy and Cloke are all on less than that and while Hogan has the potential to be better than all of them, he's not in their league yet.

$900k would be insane, there are only about 5 players in the league on more than that.

I agree but who would you take money off to give him more...we drafted one of the best small forwards in the game and all for a draft pick in the 60's...

Except if this scenario was real and Hogan was out of contract for next season, club would be throwing this amount of money at him and we would need to at least match it to keep him.

The Boyd deal is an indication of market value for up and coming KPFs, and Hogan is already a more proven prospect than Boyd.

sadly

Is this all just an indicator of why there is so much dysfunctional behaviour in AFL teams.

Salary levels as a component of the industry income, apportioned on a random short term calculation.

These guys are footballers, entertainers receiving outrageous returns for their efforts.

A mark out of ten would provide a more realistic recognition than an artificial salary. And marks should be standardised against other players in the league.

Salary should be a life time component and not considered for one year. Amounts should be designated for base with allowances for performance and components for education and long term reward, plus of course allowances for sick injury and hospital accommodation

But hey it aint gonna happen

give em the money and let them keep us entertained by their on and off field antics.

I am happy that at least we seem to have less dysfunctional behaviour than most clubs.

Sydney also have an extra mil or so to play with, so they effectively get Tippett for free.

Just give it to Hogan aye, we all know he is worth it :)

NFI.

Complete fairy floss.

If Hogan requires $900,000 for 5 or 6 , suggest we stump it up quick smart and shut the door.

You mean apart from the fact the cap is $10 million and these salaries add up to nearly $18 million?

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
