Fair enough. And it'll be Jones' last deal, otherwise we're in a world of pain.

If Matt Jones is the 38th best player on our list, I doubt we'll be in a 'world of pain'.

Garland is crucial.

Garlands first half against the Dogs was fantastic. Remains a critical part of this team on and off the field.

I agree with most of that. I would hold off on a Toumpas trade though, we wouldn't get a lot for him. Unless we were offered a first rounder, I just don't see the value in trading Toumpas. Actually the same can nearly be said of Jack Watts. I think Watts is becoming underrated around here. He simply isn't that bad of a player IMO. Can he lift? Yes, and he needs to, but I wouldn't be off loading him for the sake of it.

Right now I wouldn't trade either of them. But they are 2 players who might have currency and might also want out for a fresh start. Toump is out of contract as well.

Pretty sure he signed the one year deal along with Bail and Riley.

Still perplexed on how Jones got 2 years.

Terlich's player profile on the club website says 2 year deal.

I know his 2013 was very good but it's staggering that after his drop off last year they felt necessary to give him 2 more years.

In some ways the Matt Jones deal to the end of 2016 made more sense as it came in January 2014 so after a good first year they thought he'd still be around for 3 more. But it looked overly ambitious then and it certainly is now.

2 players who will now have to be paid out or will in all likelihood be battling away at Casey for most of next year. Hopefully Matt Jones takes some belief from his current ok patch of form and works hard to improve because dead wood on the list is a real downer for everyone else IMO.

I dont think Garland will stay after this season. i think he'll do a Rivers, i found it surprising he asked not to be considered for this years leadership group. I can't see Roos cutting and paying out contracted players, Jones & Terlich will stay

Retired- Jamar
Delist - Garland (FA), Trengove, Bail, McKenzie, Hunt
Trade Options - Howe, Watts, Grimes, Dawes
Rookie Promotion - Vandenberg, Harmes
Rookie Retain - White, King

I reckon we will persist with Trengove on another short deal, and probably lose garland and Howe

I would as well but i wouldnt be surprised if he was after a change of scenery.

I wonder if these 2 and 3 years deals were significantly front ended?

We didn't have anyone to pay the salary cap to, so it is easy to front end the contact, pay the cap, save the cash for bigger fish in future years and it is reasonably cheap to pay players out later if needed.

He's done it before.

Is there any reason we can't rookie him? I ask because I've never spent more than 30 seconds looking at the rules around that

no (rule) reason at all

I hope we look seriously at Tomlinson from he Giants. he will be a gun imo and is probably behind a few in the pecking order at the Giants now.

Ive read through a few posts. I think Mckenzie will be delisted, so will Hunt.

I think harmes may need to show a bit more, I really like him but hes struggling to find consistyency at vfl level. should be ok.

King will be fine, young ruckmen, hes got time.
Cross will only retire if he fades at the end of this yrear. Based on the last 18 months form he has another year in him.

Jamar may retire, see how hes traveling later in the year.

Trenners wont be delisted, we have sat through this foot injury tgis long, we may as well see if he can overcome it at the end of this year.
If he can he has the potential to be a great player.

No way Garland's going anywhere. Bookmark it.

This will be Matt Jones' third season. . correct me if I'm wrong but I thought he signed a two year extension during his first season, which would bring him out of contract at the end of this season?

Also, Trefflich signed a one year deal at the end of last season (which surprised many), so no pay out needed there.

He's coming from a long way back and it will be hard for him to get back into the midfield with Petracca returning aswell...

don't think they expected the Jetta to come on so quickly last year. since Jettas de-listing & rookying, he has come on as he should have, from the start of his career at a pro club.

Terls is depth for that small defender spot, but with Jetta, & now Salem coming on, games are getting thin for him. but Salem will slowly get into the midfield, in my opinion.

a fit & firing Trenners, would be fantastic off half back or defensive half forward, with some runs thru the guts.

Again, people have such short memories. A fully fit & firing Trengove would be like having another Tyson, except right-footed, stronger & could run all day.

If he's almost-but-not-quite fit & firing, then it's half-back etc.

Trengove fully fit is top-drawer midfielder. He's not as limited as Scully.

Exactly who will he replace?

Exactly who will he replace?

You can only compare his best form to the best form of players in the current team.

So he would replace Bail, Matt Jones, Newton and Riley.

The $1M question is whether Trengove will ever play 120 minutes of football let alone return to his best.

Trengove returning to his first two years form would be massive but what are the chances of that ?

Slim and the game has changed since 2011

I think if anyone was going to make it back its Trengove, incredible character and a great leader of the club and I think on that and his potential upside is well worth the risk of another short term deal, be it as a senior list player on less money or a rookie selection.

Way too early for this thread.

Happy to back Roos and PJ and Jason Taylor. Have done OK so far.

IMO it will be a very interesting trade/delist/draft period at the end of this season, more than any other under Roos. Goodwin may also have a greater say in decision making.

There are a number of fringe players that may not continue (regardless of contract status: Bail, MJones, Terlich), Trenner's future will come into play, Garland and Howe stay or go?, Jamar and Cross are getting very close to the end, and then there maybe some trade smokies, such as Watts or Gawn. We all have differing opinions on this.

I suspect we might see 8-9 go. But I would rather we trade for a gun mid (or two) rather than for draft picks. This draft is apparently weak. While Team Roos have got great value from a range of draft selections it's time we landed a big fish. At least one of Shiel, Treloar, Prestia would be an excellent result. Leuie as a FA ruck would be good too.

This time round I'd be happy if we had very few draft picks left after trade period. It would mean we landed a gun mid.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
